MILL HILL CIRCUS ROUNDABOUT IS JUST NOT BUILT RIGHT

I wanted to drop in and say a big thankyou!!!! I did my test last week at the ripe old age of 38! at Hendon , I watch this video over & over just to make sure, and you guessed it on test day I was taken to mill hill cirrus! I was taken the same way as shown in the video at 2:35 , soon as the driving examiner said take the second exit all the info you had side hit me. I did everything you said and made sure I did not put myself in a position where I was going to be in the keep clear box, cars were beeping like crazy behind me as I would not move in to the roundabout. I waited until there was a safe gap so that I was not be blocking traffic leaving the roundabout. I am happy to say I passed My driving test!! :) Thank you for the videos.

I failed here a few weeks ago on my Hendon at the entrance shown on minute 2:21. I took the middle exit and was told to go to the second exit. I failed for Use of mirrors - Change direction. Its a tough one for sure

Really good video and helpful advice about difficulty of left hand lane for vehicles turning left behind. I noticed at around 3:52 that the car in the middle lane turned left too so not sure if more of a rsik that way due to road geometry affecting drivers' choices. Also van turning left block left lane so not sure if you'd moved from left to middle anticipating that as normally stay in left as think there were two lanes to the right on camera when waiitng to exit. Maybe a box would help as keep clear seem to imply more for vehicles entering roundabout. Have noticed on some London roundabouts boxes aren't adhered too which can be due to sheer amount of traffic making it hard to progress sometimes. I think sometimes people are under pressure even with cameras due tiimpatient drivers. Earlier on the bus obstructed part of a keep clear though length makes it even harder form them to emerge and not block though as they were there you wouldn't have interfered any more. It might be possible dependeing on vehicle size and careful positioning to fit two vehicles behind lights on left lane. Ideally it would be best to leave room for two vehciles on both lanes on dual carriageway to pass though harder with long vehicles and makes it more difficult for traffic in blocked lane. Not easy turnign across dual carraigeway either especially if you wnat to go into left lane on far side and think you have to block right lane on first carriageway unless angkle car carefully in centre but harder to see or unless you can do in one go as says in Highway Code but impractical in situation such as this when busy.

I have a driving test on Friday at 1.30. I think that this time will be difficult to pass this roundabout. I should be calm and focus. Good luck. You’ve got this. Quite often they turn left first exit on that roundabout… Go get it done! FYI if you’re doing your test in manual I do offer free filmed mock tests on the channel.

I had my driving test this week in Mill Hill and had the exact same situation of going straight ahead from the Broadway in the left lane. I thought I had failed because my car was sticking out past the give way line ever so slightly as I was waiting for a spot in the traffic lights to come up. In the end when I made it across, someone from the middle lane had indeed cut across and taken the first spot and my back was sticking out into part of the keep clear 😢😢 Great news is I passed with 3 minors 👍🏻👍🏻 and the examiners feedback was that I did not hold up anyone coming round the roundabout and didn’t classify as a serious mark

I was super unlucky to come across both this roundabout and Apex in my test and failed. While doing this one, I tried to get to the middle left lane, but someone came out from right lane changed lane and took the middle left, I was not even on the keep clear but also outside the left lane, leaded to a serious mistake. So horrible this one!

It’s a horrible roundabout. Hard to understand exactly what happened otherwise I’d try to explain why… lots of grey area surrounding this roundabout. Sorry to hear you failed but you will smash your test next time… if you haven’t already.

I had my driving test (I passed thanks to your videos!) at Hendon today but for some reason the examiner took me around Mill Hill instead including this Mill Hill Circus. I was instructed to take the 2nd exit (Broadway to Lawrence St) but for some reason the examiner was hinting that I shouldn't be in the middle lane to exit so I switched to the left lane last minute when not many cars were around. The examiner was fine with me switching lanes but I thought exiting middle lane is also fine as your video suggested? Would be interested in your thoughts on this. And might be helpful for others having a test in Hendon to know that test routes could also be around Mill Hill!

Amazing news congratulations!! That’s an interesting one. I spoke with the test centre manager at Mill Hill specifically about this and he confirmed the middle lane is fine but can pose an issue on exit. You just have to be careful not to interfere with anyone. If the left lane is clear it would be preferable. If you’re coming from the A1 south turning to Lawrence street it’s nigh on impossible to get to the left hand lane. I’m happy the vids helped you. Stay safe on the roads!! 🚙🚗

You’ll be fine. There’s a lot of grey area on that roundabout. Just don’t be the car that directly interferes with traffic.

Thanks for the video. I actually live around here and do at times struggle with the roundabout but mainly because of how others drive. This roundabout can get very busy and I usually start off on the 2nd lane as you can simply just remain on the lane without taking the first or second exit. Would this be okay or is it considered incorrect?

Turning right from Mill Hill broadway down the A1 south? You can do that yes as long as you’re aware and careful. I say it enough in the vid but it’s a horrible roundabout!

I just found this video. I failed in a manual a very long time ago, and now i remember 100% , this was the roundabout, not apex, this one. I had a total of only 6 minors , i had a clean sheet, and he failed me on change direction at this roundabout.

Surly that's the one o'clock rule and being in the left lane would be incorrect. There really should be a left arrow on the left lane. If it's difficult for an experienced professional what chance do learner drivers have.

This particular roundabout as I say in the vid there is a lot of grey area… it’s not clear cut. I did have a lengthy discussion with an examiner about it. It’s just a very badly constructed roundabout. The one o’clock rule I don’t tend to teach that personally as it’s too black or white. I would encourage you to read the the road markings, asses the layout and understand just general positioning. If you’re a learner driver it’s tough sometimes to be perfect in an imperfect world… I totally understand!

How do you change direction without causing any car beside you to brake , amd then the examiner has to raise his hand to excuse me , and its a serious , and fail. And i have virtually zero minors 😠

It could be that you misjudged it or usually, quite often you didn’t use your speed properly. The traffic may have been flowing more quickly and you didn’t match it. Sorry to hear you failed. You’ll get it next time!

Totally. Roundabout should be kept to no more than two lanes on each entrance or exit. Wider and busier roads should use traffic lights to reduce the judgements required from all road users. Imagine that there are bicycle riders competing with you at the same time !
