Millbank Bag U.S.A. (How to & use of) the original pre-filter

It will pre-filter water from lakes, streams, ponds and other water sources. Particulate matter such as mud, silt or any floating debris is caught in the canvas material of the bag. This will extend the life of any kind of modern filter device that you use to purify your water and make your cooking or drinking water much more enjoyable.

Looks very different to the uk version which is much thicker & the material is what's always been accepted as the only type that really did the job. So much so it was recently researched & the old material used is still the best. Not saying your bag won't work I have no idea what's best but it's very loose compared more like a cloth than a canvas.would be interesting to compare them. My water method is to use the bag into the 1.5 litre common plastic mineral water bottle then the sawyer mini filter attaches (standard screw cap) to the water bottle & can be squeezed into the 1.1 litre stainless steel bottle (which fits into my 750ml toads mug) The stainless steel bottle (lid removed) goes on the fire & that's it all done. The steel bottle is a eater store & purifier the titanium toaks 750 mug slides onto it so no weight or space wasted & the sawyer filter is cheap & tiny Plastic bottle is £1 & collapsible or can hold day1 water supply & the millbank filter is as you know a tiny thing & can even be used to store the other said items inside.

Hoboranger Tried coffee filters. Now prefer plain men's cotton handkerchiefs. Stronger. Reusable. Can be boiled to sanitize, if needed. Have other uses from first aid to charcloth, as well. Lightweight, compact & inexpensive if purchased at discount stores. If memory serves, last ones I bought were something like $2 for a package of 3.

This weekend , starting Friday night , myself and ten other people held a weekend camp and training session in Upstate South Carolina . I was tasked to teach a lesson on water purification On Friday night I made a Millbank bag from items I bought from a hobby store . I hand stitched it by campfire and light from a headlamp . Today , Saturday afternoon , we tested it with the sludgiest creek water I could collect . The bag worked flawlessly . I let the water cool , then transferred it to a 500 ML Nalgene bottle . I added a piece of pure hardwood charcoal to absorb contaminants , then shook it to aerate it . Everyone drank some straight from the bottle at ambient temperature ( @ 70 F ) , and it was great . It tasted better than tap water and equal to commercial bottled water . Everyone should look into this . Edit , I'm a US Navy veteran with personal experience in water collection and purification .

CounterNerd That's true. It's a base with a PH of 14. Helps with heartburn too and doesn't taste like nasty baking soda. Just don't overdo it. That'd be bad.

I have done this with a tin can and the water tastes like smoke and is really unpleasant at luke warm. I think that like you said tea or maybe some MIO water flavor would help not sure how to keep the smoke taste out completely. But the water is safe and will keep you alive so I guess tastes isn't the most important thing.

zdzxzdzx I live in NC & have a beautiful clear stream in my backyard. Would I drink the water without filtration/purification? Not a chance! There are beaver ponds up stream. Google "beaver fever", if you don't already know the associated risk. Further, as beaver created their ponds, they killed trees. Dead trees that have been turned into roosting & sunning spots by buzzards. So, they continually add their "fertilizer" to that clear water that appears to be so tempting.

Giardia aka Beaver Fever. Primarily comes from contaminated water. Water where Beavers may inhabit and relieve themselves. The water either stays in the lake/pond or exists into streams. Water runoff into lakes/ponds and streams from land where livestock inhabit. Water where any animal, deer, raccoons, otters, bears, and the like, drink and relieve themselves. Thus, perfectly clear water does not indicate safe water, we cannot see Giardia. Read about the cowboys pushing cattle herds North, they would become sick from drinking the water. Giardia is nothing to play with, yes it can lead to death. The reason is when we become too sick and do not receive medical help, we may not be able to replace more water than we pass from our system through our anus; we dehydrate and die. From what I have read it is extremely painful as well. Of course, some folks never show systems, while others drinking the same water can become hospitalized. Be safe out there.
