When she first hit the scene believe or not many people rejected her voice, her style. Many like me also fell in love with her, her music voice and artistry. A lot of these first reaction people regret not being there but I think they have a far more cosmopolitan taste and immediately recognise what people like me saw and heard. Kate deserved far more plaudits than she received even though she received many. Genius.

This is the song that ensorcelled me, Kate performed this on SNL in 1979 and it was spectacular. She was born one month after my other favorite artist Prince and they have a similar trajectory debuting in 1978. Both genius, highly individualistic, theatrical, signed as teenagers, sensual, charismatic, and demanded creative control over their art. Kate & Prince's eyes are so beautiful and expressive, you don't see that anymore.

Kate is an artistic genius and icon and remains one of the most influential female musicians of all time. Still revered, respected and highly relevant - her 2014 "Before The Dawn" series of concerts sold out over 100,000 tickets in less than 15 minutes (a record for London's Hammersmith Apollo). Her 22 performances were highly acclaimed (named as "the #1 live music event of the year" by many music publications). Also in 2014, Kate became the first woman to have 8 of her albums in the Top 40 album charts at the same time (and she was third behind only Elvis and the Beatles). Her 3 disc, 4 lp, live album of those performances, was released in 2016 and also ranked in the charts. In September of 2020 Kate was honored as a fellow of the prestigious Ivors Academy for songwriters and composers. Kate fans all over the world are eagerly awaiting and hoping for the release of a new album. In the meantime, it was announced that Big Boi (from the group OutKast who is a huge fan of Kate) has recorded a song with her.

This song was released on Kate's debut album "The Kick Inside" (1978), 3 years after recording the song. I remembered hearing she wrote this song when she was very young, 15? So I checked it - she was 13! She recorded the song in 1975 when she was 16. David Gilmour, (Pink Floyd) paid for the recording.

You must check out the closing track from this debut album, "The Kick Inside", the title track. To me this was the most astounding piece on the album, it is a suicide letter from a young woman to her brother/lover, as she is carrying his unborn child, she is willingly taking her life to spare him the shame and scandal. I think it is based uponn an old Irish romance. It is an incredibly sophisticated arrangement and the lyrics are superb. "Your sister I was born, and you must lose me like an arrow, shot into the killer storm.." This was written by a 17 year old girl????

At the time when it came out, I was 16, I felt this song had a classic simplicity to it just like the Jam’s English Rose, a naive yearning of love from a young mind, it was hypnotic and sparked my imagination. It’s a really special time, 16 and it’s so poignant to look back, when everything was ahead of you. Wuthering Heights was her big hit, but this was quiet in the background. Just her in a leotard looking so mysterious and beautiful.

I heard that she wrote music about stories because she thought that she was boring. She had nothing interesting to say about herself. That was why she wrote about stories like Wuthering Heights, the classic book by Emily Bronte. She went to meetings with other pop musicians and she would try to hide in the background because she thought that no one would be interested in her. I thought that I would say this so that you can understand why she would do a lot of stories about other people. I think that it is fantiastic that she did that. It is great to have music about great works of literature.
