Much is made of this song being written when she was 13. I think it is more accurate to say she wrote the first draft at 13 in among all the other songs she had started writing at that age, and then finished it off when she was 15. It was one of three songs Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour paid for her to have professionally recorded and produced in 1975 when she was 16 to serve as a demo tape to present to record companies. EMI signed her up when she was still 16. It was these demos of ‘The Man…’ and ‘Saxophone Song’ that appear on her debut album released in 1978. So with this music video you are seeing Kate at 19 but hearing her at 16. Kate said in early interviews that very little of her songs’ content was based on personal experience. They were based mainly on imagination and were often written from a third person’s perspective. Kate said this song was inspired by something she saw in all the men she knew. That with each there was something of the little boy in a man’s body.

one of my favourite Kate Bush songs. I have most (if not all) her early stuff on vinyl even down to the EPs and the ones with the gatefold sleeves. Her performances at Hammersmith were out of this world. I believe those performances were the first use of a headset microphone as Kate danced in most if not all of her songs.

I get it, too. I've "gotten" her since I discovered her when The Whole Story (a greatest hits cassette) came out in the late 80s. So I know exactly how you feel. I bought the cassette solely on the strength of Running Up That Hill, as I'd seen the video on MTV (Kate never got as famous or as much airplay in the early 80s here in the states). After I fell down the rabbit hole, I kept wanting to talk to someone about her artistry, but everyone was clueless and uninterested. I found out that she's not for everyone. No one else I knew loved her until the woman who later became my wife, who also gets her. Our aligned tastes in all things artistic is definitely part of the foundation of our enduring friendship. BTW, you've had me since the opening of the first video I clicked on, when you said that you'd read Wuthering Heights not once but twice, and BECAUSE IT WAS DIFFICULT AND YOU WANTED TO UNDERSTAND IT BETTER! Whoa. Challenging yourself as a reader like that -- it's impressive and rare these days. Kudos. Have a blast immersing yourself into Kate. So much more joy yet to come.

Wow Vaughn, thank you so so much for this amazing comment. I'm a bit teary actually (I cry easily :D). I completely understand you. When you discover something that really resonates, you seek others who feel the same so you can share that passion. It's a little ostracizing when you realize others don't quite get you. I'm very happy to hear you found that comfort in your wife, it's a wonderful thing. And thank you for not making me feel bad about having to read the book multiple times! I was a little ashamed at first when I couldn't understand it and I thought there was something wrong with me. But I was determined to figure it out and it worked in my favor because I loved it and it prepared me for understanding the song.

@@generationgapreacts Regarding being easily moved to tears, me too. Have you ever seen the movie, The Holiday (Kate Winslet and Camron Diaz switch houses)? It's a favorite of my wife's, and because of a line Jude Law's character says, my wife has nicknamed me Major Weeper (like the military title). 😂 You're absolutely my hero for that reread. I feel like there are about a dozen classics I should reread, but you actually did it!

Thank you, for another great reaction, your opinion takes me way back to when I 1st encountered Kate Bush back in 1978 with "Wuthering Heights" I was hooked when I saw the "white dress" video, there was also another connection since Kate was born and brought up in the same part of South East suburban London as I was, only a few miles away. This part of London has other musical connections to for example the Rolling Stones and David Bowie (an artist to which has been compared) came from Bromley which is only a few miles away. BTW I might need to add some more songs to my original selected list at this rate! 😀 But seriously don't feel that you are limited to that list, because if others suggest other album tracks that fit into your chronological order then feel free to add them, an example being the title track of her debut album "The Kick Inside". Regarding Kate's maximum vocal range it has been estimated to be from Bb1 - F7 which is apparently equivalent to 5 Octaves, 4 Notes and 1 semitone - which is a crazy possible range. Regarding Kate's albums in vinyl, I don't know what's the availability of separate albums is where you are. Kate did release 2018 remastered versions of her entire studio album output together with rare tracks and covers she performed in the form of four LP boxsets, her live album "Before The Dawn" a recording of her "Before The Dawn" 2014 concert performance has a separate LP boxset of its own.

Wait till you get to "The Dreaming" album. It is bonkers - but brilliant (in my opinion). Enjoy your trip. I am quite envious of people who discover her for the first time. As Kate got older her music changed (it had to, she was no longer a young girl). Do not know whether her recent success will tempt her out of her (never officially announced) retirement, but she has recorded a duet with Big Boi (last year) that has never been released. She rarely gives interviews, never seeks publicity or even have a particular online presence so you would never know what she will do.

it's the line "Maybe he doesn't love me, I just took a trip on my love for him." that really hits. Haven't you felt like that? You're so in love with someone and you think they love you back in the same degree but you have to wonder, what if they don't? What if it's just all you loving him and he doesn't really love you back as much, and you're deluding yourself? I've had that feeling a few times in my romantic life. "Moving", "Them Heavy People", "Strange Phenomena" and "The Kick Inside" you haven't yet done and are all present in this group of videos. "Them Heavy People" has an official video from the KB Music channel.

I love how frail this song is. And dark at the same time. I always saw her "man" as a dream that climbs through her window to do things to her that she didn't really understood if she wanted him to be there or not. You can kind of choose how you want to perceive it. When I listen to this song I feel serenity but disgust at the same time. In the end, Kate is a champion for dreamers. And I can tell you're a big fan as well. :3

I interpret the song as being about her fantasy (not in a sexual way) older man, from a teenage girl's perspective. "I realise he's there when I turn the light off and turn over"; he's not really there, he's just there in her imagination. Likewise "When I stay up late He's always waiting", he's always waiting because he's not really there, but he's always there in her imagination whenever she wants him to be, regardless of what time she goes to bed. At the start of the second verse, "He's very understanding And he's so aware of all my situations", again, she's asigning these qualities to him, as that's how he is in her imagination; he's aware of her situations because he exists (in this form) as she imagines him, he's perfect. And at the end, again suggesting that it's not a real relationship, just the kinda crush that she's got on an older guy "Maybe he doesn't love me I just took a trip on my love for him" as she comes to realise that it's not real. I'm not saying that someone real didn't inspire these feelings in Kate, but I don't think the song portrays a real relationship, but is more an imaginary one; perhaps the ideal of him retaining some boyish wonder (which Kate herself alluded to, that all men can do this whereas women mature away from childhood) makes him more relatable to her as a younger woman dreaming of an older guy.

Hi, I love your Kate Bush reactions, it is so great to see someone “get” her right from the start. You had mentioned on one of your reviews for other unique, different artists. Please check out Regina Spektor. She was born in Russia and her family immigrated to NYC when she was 9 or 10. Like Kate, she writes songs like nobody else. Plays beautiful piano and has a great voice and really different songs. Bunches of her videos on KZbin.

You mentioned that Kate seems to be singing from the womb. From this same period, she actually has a song and video that her character sings from her mother's womb: "Breathing". The lyrics are stunning and the production follows suit, organically. Kate's sense of melody is amazing, and her talent as pianist, with those runs up and down the keyboard, are thrilling yet never played for their own sake -- only and always for the sake of the song. In her prime, Kate Bush's voice had a five-octave range, but while people gawk at how high she could sing, they forget the harmonic richness and fullness of that voice. They glance past the exact control that she is able to exert over her instrument. And they don't fully realize the range of voices that she can produce. You need to hear her giving out the best Rock screams, in songs like "The Big Sky", during its closing minute.

When I saw that Stranger Things character Max’s favorite artist was Kate Bush I just thought well she’s a super cool girl and she’s got great taste. Between that, and the fact that she has finally been introduced to the US decades late but properly, it’s worth it for her to be running up the charts again with this song. But first thing I thought of his Max has really great taste in music out of all the cassettes in her backpack they reached for that one.

I'm so glad you are listening to Kate's Lionheart. Believe me when you get to her Never Forever album you'll be just as bowled over. She is a true original and it's lovely to see young'uns like yourself showing appreciation for Kate. Don't stop these vids, you are doing great - missing your mother, though.

Gotta do BABOOSHKA. Luckily for me I was well aware of her in the 80s, as a college roommate of mine was deeply into her back then. I’ve heard this one a lot since then, and have had it all it my faves for 30+ years. She’s a phenomenon to be sure.
