The worst part about this, is that back when this song came out, the house prices were like 30% cheaper than they are now now.

This was depressing af... I've actually heard people straight up say they are giving up on ever hoping to own a home and just hoping they can rent better in the future... Also read about a family who was renting with no hope of buying--they sponsor some kid in a 3rd world country--they got an update on the kid saying the family had just purchased their own multi-bedroom house...... shit's fucked.

+stinky1138 Tell those people you know that there is a way to be a homeowner and profit from rising rents. Buy a duplex, live in one side and rent out the other. That's what I do, and it's allowing me to live in a rich old-money suburb that I otherwise would have never been able to afford. It also provides for amazing tax deductions. Like you can depreciate half your house, and you can deduct half the cost of anything related to the yard, such as a lawn mower, gardening tools, flower bulbs, shrubs, professional landscaping work, etc.
@Daskard
@Daskard 7 жыл бұрын
Step 1: Buy a duplex. For how much exactly? :D And from which savings? The savings people over in America (I am from Europe) don't have because they are slaves to their student loans? Not everyone gets a scholarship and not every field is paid fair; e.g. architects usually start quite low (from what architects and people from fields related to architecture have told me). I know housing prices in the U.S. and they are insane. Rising rents are always good ... for home owners. Have you ever thought about the other side? Devil-may-care ...

+Ronald I spent years saving to buy my place. I did not have the money to purchase my property until shortly before I turned 30 (this was in the year 2014). There is no instant gratification. My salary did start low, as does everybody's when they start out, so I had to wait till I I saved enough and my salary increased.

hamsterama mate I'm 33. I'm not a young kid here. i have exactly zero hope of ever owning a home. a cheap home where i rent is around 6-700, that's an apartment or town house, a full size house is 1M. if i go buy in the 500 range, it's more than an hour to work each way - not accounting for traffic. the fuel and tolls will kill you. just because you were fortunate enough to be able to save doesn't mean that's the situation for everyone. the future is actually getting worse for young people.
@hamsterama
@hamsterama 7 жыл бұрын
+stinky1138 You gotta move somewhere cheaper, then! I live in the Midwest (Ohio), where housing prices are reasonable. I'm presuming you live in either the west coast or New England. Housing in those regions is ridiculously and famously overpriced. My brother lives in LA. There, a small ranch house costs 1M plus. That's crazy.

Your parents likely bought their first home for a 5 digit sum. Don't blame your parents, blame monetary policy. Fun fact: the value of the dollar has dropped more than 80% of it's value since just 1970. Yet, how much have wages gone up since then? Not much.

XCAVATA - its hilarious how anyone thought... "home prices rising faster than inflation? totally normal!! Infinitely sustainable!!" even now, my father tries to make the argument that the housing market never should have crashed and prices where supposed to rise forever... He is a fool. the current market is prop'd up by massive private equity firms buying homes at top dollar and driving rent in the area through the roof. Apartment owners win, home owners win, Millennial's and later LOOSE. Their milking us dry and leaving us with nothing and have the fucking nerve to call us the "ME" generation.

i bought a 2 bath, 2 bed, 2 car garage house w/ full finished basement in the suburbs of chicago. with marble countertops. i bought it when i was 26 (im 27 now). i have 2 cars and student loans. i'm also black and make 64k/yr. BELIEVE ME, it's possible to have a home in your 20s. if i can do it anyone can. don't get down. also it was a conventional mortgage.
@Forgan_Mreeman
@Forgan_Mreeman 7 жыл бұрын
*Pigeon* you know EXACTLY what being black has to do with it. so don't even play stupid. You tell me what living in a big city has to do with anything? Don't use that for an excuse. What does family living in rural areas have to do with you? it's actually easier to find a house in a rural areas. You're talking about higher mortgages. which is totally off topic. My home life was single mom, multiple job, me and my brother, we bounced in and out of no electricity, using the stove for heat, no hot water, etc. I have a big family but no one talks to each other for the most part. I have not had had to care for a family member (not sure what this has to do with getting a house) Your interview questions show you know nothing about me. I was farrrr from "cradled". i grew up on the south side of chicago. crime ridden streets. i''ve seen many of my peers die. me and my brother are the 1% that made it out. Go have a seat.

Pigeon idk. you come off like the slacker type to me. but I should step back from what exactly? I commented a few facts about my current situation (a situation majority of people my age find themselves in) and I made it known it's not impossible to find a nice home. The video paints a negative and discouraging future for my generation. Which is true for many. My comment was simply to show "if I can do it anyone can". If you work hard of course. because absolutely NOTHING was given to me to make where I am today easier. I don't see a reason to "step off". YOU need to lighten up and stop trying to kill my vibe.
@studentlogan
@studentlogan 7 жыл бұрын
Pigeon I don't think you come off as a slacker, just an idiot. FrogLungs was NOT condemning anyone or judging anyone else's situation. To me, he was offering an anecdote to demonstrate that it IS possible to be a millennial and own a house, not talk shit to people who for whatever circumstance cannot do that. I don't see why you have to be so combative? It's unequivocal that the housing market in the U.S. is screwed up, I don't think FrogLungs would disagree, but it is not necessarily impossible. At least not yet.. You're also a self-described troll according to your description. I really hope that is the case, and you aren't really that oblivious.

True enough, but it always seems that 90% of the time I see people complaining about this topic it's people who either never went to school or went to school for something impractical (or straight up worthless) and are now working a service job for $10-15/hour and expect to be able to buy a beautiful home in a nice area. I have no sympathy for those people. Your philosophy degree and Walmart job aren't cutting it? Aww, shucks... In fact, the only reason I saw this video was because it was shared on Facebook by someone I know in that exact situation.

The frustration comes from the fact that the majority of my generation's parents were able to buy *good* housing with the job they got right out of high school. My generation doesn't want a "McMansion"; we want a home with an okay view instead of cement walls, a little space instead of practically living with your neighbors, and a small yard for our dogs. My husband is college-educated with a degree and multiple certificates, got a job in the growing tech industry four years ago, works 40-hour weeks, and we are LUCKY that we could afford the down payment for a 636 sq ft condo that hasn't been updated since it was built in the 70s and is next to the freeway on-ramp. I'm grateful that we have this, but the point is that with *less* credentials, people like his parents were able to buy a four-bedroom, 3.5 bath, two-story house with a large yard and a rec room by the same age. Last year, they sold that house for $300k. That same year, we bought this little condo for $120k.
@kevinmiller8111
@kevinmiller8111 6 жыл бұрын
Screw the McMansion I just want a simple house. Developers stopped building starter homes a long time ago. Now everything being built are insanely large McMansions or luxury condos so we are stuck competing with much richer Boomers who are downsiding for the same homes. :/
