Hey it's the 77 year old grandma, it's because of singers and music like this from the 1950's and 1960's that all of you youngsters are living today if you get my drift. lol. My generation had the most beautiful love songs ever recorded in the history of the world, we all fell in love slow dancing to these great singers. Oh and Bobby here is only one half of the righteous brothers. Put the two singers together and you have real greatness. Welcome to the world of real music.

While it originated in the 60s, this one (and a number of others) carried over well into the 80s & 90s. Good music transcends its generation, its origins, even (sometimes) its medium. A lot of those songs greatly enriched the movies & TV shows of the 80s, "reviving" them in popularity for later generations. (Eventually we'll get him listening to Bach, Handel, Tallis...)

Sadly, we lost Bobby Hatfield in 2003...he was only 63. During this performance, he was 25. He and Bill Medley were NOT brothers. They adopted that name when while on tour, fans were shocked to see they were WHITE, and then called them real “Righteous Brothers”. As everyone else says, check out their biggest hit: “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”. Bill Medley starts it out. That’s where many ASSUME they were black. The term “blue-eyed soul” was coined about these guys.

One of the things that made this so popular at the time was that so many young couples in the U.S. were separated by the young men being in the Viet Nam war. They were literally wondering if their girls back home were still theirs or not. It was "the song" of so many couples of that generation!

I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

You are remembering the song from the 1990 movie Ghost With Demi Moore and Patric Swayze. It was Bobbie Hatfield's track that was used in the movie. Nobody has ever done that better than Bobby Hatfield, one-half of the righteous brothers. The other half Bill Medley produced this live performance and there was no autotune there at all, that was just Bobby and the orchestra standing up and ripping it out. Bobby suffered from severe stage freight his entire career which I’m sure lead him to use cocaine. But contrary to the commonly held belief, he did not die because of a cocaine overdose, he also had a long-standing heart condition that ultimately took his life. Someone coined the name of their style as blue-eyed-soul, and they were indeed that to the core.

Unchained Melody was written for the prison movie 'Unchained' (1955). The movie was based on the book titled 'Prisoners are People' by Kenyon J. Scudder. The song was first sung in the movie by African American opera singer, Broadway and film actor, and Howard University professor Todd Duncan...A true Renaissance Man. The song was composed by Alex North (1910-1991) and the Lyrics by Hy Zaret (1907-2007). Their song has been sung by almost every major recording artist around the world since 1955. Thus it has become one of the most recorded songs in the history of music. Ten years later in 1965. Bobby Hatfield of the 'Righteous Brothers' on the Andy Williams show. Gave one of the greatest live performances in television history. Thus his version of 'Unchained Melody' (1965) has become the quintessential version of them all. It is this version that recording artist from around the world use today. In 1991 the blockbuster movie 'Ghost' starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopie Goldberg who won an Oscar for her role. Featured 'Unchained Melody' as the movies soundtrack, and Bobby Hatfield's version was used as the films title song. The rest as they say is history... Note: It has been noted that in this live television performance. Bobby Hatfield was able to hit 20 notes that most singers can not get to in a live performance. Priceless!

LOL, Yes you are telling us how young you are by not knowing The Righteous Brothers. One of the best American Duos ever recorded. Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield. They were once part of a group called Paramours but split from the group and called themselves The Righteous Brothers back in the early 60's. They sang some of the most popular songs in American Music History and a lot of their songs are still used today in movies. Yes, this is their original song, back in '64 it was very rare that someone did a "Cover" although Elvis did an amazing rendition of this song. Unchained Melody and You've Lost That Loving Feeling are two of their top hits but they have so many more like Soul and Inspiration, You've Lost that Loving Feeling (which were two of their other HUGE hits) Ebb Tide, Let It be Me, Georgia On My Mind, and more recently (in '87) Bill Medley did a duet with Jennifer Warnes with I've Had the Time of My Life, which was a huge hit and made popular for the soundtrack of Dirty Dancing . Both men were extremely talented. Bill Medley is still alive and still tours at the age of 80.

Unchained Melody was sung by Bobby Hatfield. The other half of the Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley wasn't involved in this song. "They were both singing in, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling". They played that song in the movie "Ghost" with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. From what I understand, when this song was released, it was played on the radio until a number of stations found out that they were white. Once they found out that they were white, they stopped playing their music. Back in that era, there was so much great music, so many singers and great bands, that it amazes me that people today have never heard of them, I mean, what are they listening to these days? When I see reaction videos with people saying they've never heard of singers or bands like, The Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac, The Momas and the Papas, Carly Simon, Carole King, Steppenwolf, ZZ Top, The Four Tops, Diana Ross and the Supremes, and the list goes on and on, I wonder if they've been kept in the basement all of their lives?

What always amazes me when I watch this video is that at the very end after he has totally nailed those highs notes - live no less - is that he looks as it was totally effortless. This is probably the most known version, but it was originally the theme song for a movie called Unchained back in 1955, thus, Unchained Melody. It has been a pretty popular melody since it's inception for it's sultry, moving melody.

The song had been around 10 years (it was an "oldie"!) by the time they recorded it, but for whatever reason, our generation wasn't ready to make it into a "best of all time" song until the RB did this version. Take a look at this who's who list of all 469 covers: secondhandsongs.com/work/3321/versions#nav-entity You will see A LOT of familiar names in the early years. This is by far the most well known version of this song these days, because it was featured in Ghost, back in the 1990, but it had been recorded by many artists both before and since the Righteous Brothers. I believe there were multiple versions near the top of the charts at the same time, because it was an era when songs were regularly recorded and re-recorded by big names - most songs weren't written by the people who sang them, and if it was a great song, why wouldn't you do your own version? You didn't necessarily have the concept of a cover version in the same way that we think of now. That said, it wouldn't have had the impact that it did if it wasn't a great version, and well worth listening too - he's a really talented singer.

Song goes back to 1955 for the movie "Unchained," about the pending release of a long-term convict. The song, as plaintive and heart-felt as it is, asks his woman if he should come home, asks if she still wants and loves him, as before the prison term. Lovingly, longingly, questioningly it is sung by the master of this tune. Live studio audience plus national TV broadcast seem not to have exerted pressure on Bobby. Nervous though he was, as his Mom was in the audience, and he was just getting over a head cold, he delivered a flawless performance that so many folks fell in love to, fell in love AGAIN to. This recording should be preserved in the Library of Congress national treasures vault!

The Righteous Brothers were a duo, but occasionally they would sing solo. They were prime examples of what we call Blue Eyed Soul... Bill Medley brings the deeper baritone sound while Bobby Hatfield's higher voice perfectly compliments Bill's. "You've lost that loving feeling" is a great example of their voices blended together. It holds the title of the most radio played requested song of the 20th century. I was born two years after this performance, but I always heard it being played at home & on the radio. It's been one of my all time favorite songs since I was a young kid. It is considered to be one of the greatest love songs ever composed. It has been covered many times over by many great artists but Bobby Hatfield's version is probably the most well known & beloved the world over. It was used as the main love theme for the movie GHOST starring Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze, & Whoopi Goldberg (she won the Academy Award for best supporting actress that year). This was definitely Bobby's song as no other can match his performance - so silky smooth & melodic, such a one of a kind ethereal voice that can make anyone swoon - LOL. Keep in mind also that he did this in front of a live audience, on live nationwide TV back in 1965, years before any computer aided autotune or post production editing. *side note - speaking of vocal talent... Please check out Sir Tom Jones (aka The Voice). He was dubbed with that moniker decades before the competition-reality TV show of the same name. Tom is held in such high regard not only by fans, but also his peers in the music industry. Some of Tom's big hits that other KZbinrs are reacting to lately are: Delilah, I'll never fall in love again, Green green grass of home, It's not unusual, She's a lady... oh, and he did a cover of KISS (by Prince) with the band, Art of Noise, back in 1988. He's still singing strong & touring at 80 years old (his b-day is tomorrow June 7th).

The song was written for a movie called 'Unchained' in 1955. The movie didn't do well but after several covers of the song, BOBBY HATFIELD'S cover made it famous forever! In '74 (?) The Righteous Brothers sang a beautiful tribute to the singers we've lost called ROCK AND ROLL HEAVEN. Rest easy Bobby, you always did sing like an angel 💕

First there are two Righteous Bros but at times they did solos performances in their careers Yes remember this was a live performance on the Andy Williams show there was no do overs just his pure gorgeous voice and a small microphone. Many artists before and after him have done this song but no one will ever compare to his performance. HE OWNS THIS SONG .I still get goosebumps when I hear him sing this song I was in school when I heard this.Many fell in love to this song and with him ❤ His partner Bill Melody was there just not singing this song.

Thank you so much young man for playing this beautiful song sung by Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. Could you please play another solo "Summertime"1965 LIVE. I sure do thank you. And I wouldlike your reaction of his musical abilities. Thank you young man. Have a Happy Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas and a Beautiful, Blessed New Year. Keep up the good work Daddy'o. Totally Groovy, totally "Righteous". "Blue Eyed Soul". Not bad at all.

you are a very mature millennial LOL This song came out 5 years before I was born and I loved it before it was even in the movie "ghost" LOL not sure if you're familiar with the little thing called "the wall of sound" by Phil Specter. I believe the Righteous Brothers caught the tail end of that "era". The wall of sound was also used with other artists. it was a style that had the pop singer backed up by not only rock n roll band but a huge symphony orchestra. Others can probably correct me if I'm wrong.
@amcasanave
@amcasanave 4 жыл бұрын
They were under contract with Spector. This song did not have the "wall of sound" and was considered filler on an album. Bill Medley produced the recording because Spector wasn't interested in songs that weren't huge. It was also the B-Side of a 45 (RPM record). DJs kept playing it more than the A-Side. It was one of the reasons they moved to MGM Records.

Loving the throw back, let’s make that an occasional thing. Surprisingly, this is not an original of The Righteous Brothers. The song was written in 1955 for a movie, but became hugely popular when they recorded it. It has become very much associated with them. The song received a huge boost in popularity when it was used in the movie “Ghost”. Great choice to check out, man. Loved it!! Good luck on the move.

The song was written for a 1955 movie called Unchained, about a guy in prison who couldn’t wait to get back to his girl. The guy who wrote the lyrics refused to put any of that stuff into the song so it became a general love song, sung by many before the Righteous Brothers did it .. but nobody else did it like this, altho many other singers covered the song later (including Elvis) and based their versions of it on this version by The Righteous Brothers ... It is a solo song, but the Righteous Brothers were a duo so they flipped a coin to see who was going to do it, and Bobby Hatfield won. The other member of the duo was Bill Medley who arranged the music for the studio version as well as for this performance AND he played piano while Bobby was singing .. so it was still a team effort. Bobby sang another version for the movie “Ghost “ and this revived interest in the 1965 version (this one) which was then re-released. The Righteous Brothers and this song made history by having two different versions of the same song in the Top20 of the charts at the same time, competing against each other!

This song was dedicated to me by my husband when were dating and had to be apart for several months. It's still our song. ❤ These 2 guys (yes, there is another brother who sings baritone), are incredible singers, and have many great songs. No auto-tuners back then, just amazing vocalists. Blue-eyed soul at it's best. I was 6 when this came out. Oh, the music I can introduce you to, dude! 😄 From the group that coined the term heavy metal (Steppenwolf) to some great Motown sounds, to original Woodstock greats like Janis Joplin, and 70s rock that will blow your mind! So much great music, so little time, man.

Originally written in 1955 by Alex North and Hy Zaret. This song was covered by over 600 people but the Righteous Brothers (Bobby Hatfield) did it like no other and really put this song on the map. A version of this song was in the movie Ghost. Another Righteous Brothers song "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" was also a huge hit. It was soundtrack in the movie Top Gun.

And that is LIVE ! Nobody playing with his voice or any vocals for that matter. HE IS A NATURAL. Just like you said. THE REAL DEAL. Pretty impressive huh? Today you can have a horrible voice and they can make you sound good. But he is live and every girl in that place fantasized at the sound of this guy. They all imagined that he was singing just to them. My mother saw them live in 65 and most likely she was pregnant with me . Being born in 65. JUST SHEER RAW TALENT.
