One more freedom lacking in the US is what we in Sweden call "the principle of openness". What it means is that all government acts/files/information are public property (with exceptions for personal data) so that unless it is classified military stuff, it is public information. I can walk into my city council's office and demand all accounting figures from last year, and they will comply. This gives journalists enormous powers of insight into government affairs. It's great for the people - not so good for criminals in politics.

@janedoe44712 жыл бұрын
Australian chick here too, I think that 8% could well be attributed to marriages that are emotionally over, but for religious reasons not legally ended, because to all the men out there, your wife always knows, you will come home either smelling like another woman or suspiciously clean, and eventually you accidentally try something new out of left field that the other woman enjoys. So here’s a hot tip, be honest, because maybe your spouse would like a hall pass too and it might even bring you closer together, but you don’t want to be married to a woman who’s quietly furious.
@Nah-ah2 жыл бұрын
Aussie here too. I think the 8% are sexless marriages !
@ColinFox2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about the divorce rate dropping, and one explanation could be that the men in those cases wanted something beyond the marriage bed, and could turn to a prostitute to get a quick fix, in a businesslike way. Without prostitutes, if you wanted some side action you'd have to actually pick up someone, and potetially form a side relationship which could easily be more devastating to the marriage than a quickie in a hotel room.
@PhantomFilmAustralia Жыл бұрын
The main reason is that a man can get the sex his wife won't give him and not run the risk of his wife finding emails, text messages, tit pics/box shots on her husband's smartphone, or answering the phone to the "other woman." There are no attachment issues with a hooker, as it's strictly business with no emotion. No chance of a hooker stalking a man or deliberately trying to f**k up his marriage.

I grew up in the Netherlands, and we'd go out to the pubs in the town square as a family group. 30 cousins, + parents, + grandparents. The grandparents and youngest, 14-15, would set off for home earliest, then the 16-17s (most of them), and the older young people would stay out longest. We were allowed a few beers at age 14-15; some more at 16-17, and by 18 we'd seen enough to know how to behave. They had these wooden flat boards at the pubs with holes cut in them, and the bar tenders would load them up with beer in glasses, and you'd walk about with it amongst your kin, and all would help themselves (the holes were there, so the beers would not fall over in the crowd); and we'd all take turns ordering rounds (those in paid work, and the parents). The night would end at pubs playing house and techno. We'd all walk from pub to pub, terraces out front, music within. We'd drink and chat in the square. None (or few) would lose control, as the others made sure that it would be done proper. We learnt how to behave, from the examples set by the older cousins, parents, and grand parents. It was raucous and fun. It was how it ought be done. It was all beer, spirits were hardly drunk (spirits and wine were reserved for the dinner table). Some of my best memories...

@RS-fy9hb4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, here in Denmark, you only have to be 16 to buy beer, and stuff that's less than 5%. And everything else becomes legal at 18. Since we get used to drinking, especially in social settings, we learn how to control it under parents' supervision, and thus when we get older and to the legal drinking age of hard liquor and are able to drive, we have a lot more people capable of making more rational decisions about how much alcohol we can actually take, and we usually remind those whom we've seen drink too much, to not drive a car if tjey were planning to. But of course, we also have a culture centered around social drinking and things like that, so it can get pretty awkward if you don't drink, but so long as you're pretty gopd at having fun with drunk people, it doesn't make much difference.

My parents (european) always allowed me to taste anything they drank when I was a kid, just a sip. I never liked anything. My interest and taste for various alcoholic beverages did not develop before I was 17'ish or 18'ish. Now the problem about kids drinking alcohol is a biological. The liver is not fully developed until 18'ish. Until then alcohol breakdown is less efficient, and the impact of regular alcohol consumption on a child's liver will have long-term damage. In the 18th century, London's water was so polluted that it was safer to give beer to infants rather than water. Side note: The licensing of Gin production by the government, plus heavy duty on all imported spirits, created a market for thousands of Gin-shops across England. Gin was cheaper than beer ! At some point, at any time of day, a quarter of the population of London was drunk on Gin.

A fine of up to $2000 can be imposed if deemed if you haven't supplied them alcohol in a safe and responsible manner). Oh, also no age limit to that rule either. However, it's fully legal for someone under 18 to be employed to SELL and SERVE alcohol! www.alcohol.org.nz/alcohol-management-laws/nz-alcohol-laws/age-the-law/young-people-in-licensed-premises Also here in NZ, prostitution is FULLY legal. They don't have to be in brothels. Can be independent operators. They have a union, receive free everything - testing, condoms etc. If in trouble they call the cops. So if they have those options, and its safe and they are open about it, it could very well help marriages.

Also I think many married men in Australia wouldn't want to pick up a prostitute off the street (legality/STI) and so pursued women in social settings where they wind up developing a romantic relationship. Because they didn't want the 14 year olds with alcohol problems to ruin the fun for the 17 year olds. (And no, they didn't actually think 16 year olds shouldn't be allowed to drink beer, But they noticed that the 16 year olds kept feeding the younger ones drunk, Often accidentally because of a difference in tolerance. So they just moved the problem up a few years, And it fixed itself for the most part.

Many countries allow you to drink from 15 upwards with parental supervision in a pub/bar but you can drink from 5 year old upwards in the U.K. in your family property with parental supervision (your not allowed to get wasted or anything like that, but a glass of wine or similar is okay), but from 18 you can drink what the hell you want, where ever you want. Sometimes the funny thing is that some Americans think U.S. laws apply to them while holidaying in the U.K. and so if they are under 21, they will say, I'm not allowed to in America, it's illegal. Then look at other 19 and 20 year olds like they are breaking the law when it's 18 here, not 21. It's quite funny, especially when they bring up other laws like jaywalking, then a small argument breaks out trying to explain to them, there are no jaywalking laws in the U.K. so a person crossing the road half way down it, isn't breaking the law.

In Germany we can legally buy and drink beer and wine at 16. Hard stuff at 18. Doesnt make any sense to me why youre not allowed to do this until youre 21 in the us. When you are able to legally drink alcohol most of us here are already tired of that shit

We drink and get our licences to drive at 18. In Australia, we had many migrants from Europe, throughout our history, and alcohol was normal in their households. I had wine from when I was 8, with lemonade, beer with lemonade also.

"The Divorce rate dropped by 8% ........ Bro, is that true"??? Well, I don't know if that's true. But, strangely I've run across a few marriages where the wife actually allows the hubby to "have his fling" in a safe environment. Admittedly, a lot were in their later years ... and I don't know what the circumstances were ie. performance, can't be bothered, an understanding, etc. And I'm not sure what the wife got up to or what she got out of it. I knew one gentleman in his late 50's / 60's who went for a dirty weekend in Singapore every year .... and his wife let him. I thought it weird. I guess if the wife doesn't "want to put out" anymore but they both agree they still want the marriage and still love each other. Instead of letting the husband go "wander" .... sending him to a brothel makes sense. No relationships with a prostitute, safe environment, no babies out of wedlock, keep it professional, no broken marriage, do his thing and leave. A lot better than meeting another girl, falling in love and leaving the wife. Hard for me to do .... but, I admit it does make sense. So, the divorce rate drop in Aussie is believable.

In US you can drive, buy long gun, be part of the porn industry and in the military... but not buy a beer. Its a bit strange for an European.

Land of the free home of the brave. You get fined for crossing a road in the wrong place. Side note - in the UK children aged 5 to 16 are legally allowed to drink alcohol at home or on other private premises. 16 to 18 year olds can drink in a bar if accompanied by an adult while eating a meal so going for a meal and a couple of pints is legal. That includes your 18 year old friends.

I'm french and I had to check on the internet to know what is the legal age to drink here, I think that already answer the question ^^ Turns out there's none... Apparently we can't buy it until we're 18, but it's ok to drink some before that age if an adult buys it for you. And that adult has to stay with you when you drink if you're under 16.

When I was 16, I went to Holland for the summer. The drinking age there was 16. I met a lot of cousins who were amazed that I had a drivers license and my own car, and also didn’t give a crap about drinking alcohol. When it’s introduced at an early age, it’s no big deal. When you have to wait until you’re 21, you’ve probably been breaking the law for years anyway, and now that you’re legal, it is definitely a big deal…. party time.

In Denmark the legal drinking age is 16 for beverages with up to 16% alc. 18 for hard liquor. But that wasn't always the case. When I was a teen in the 2000's the legal age was 15 for all alcohol.

In Sweden you can drink in bars at 18 but you need to be 20 to buy liquor in stores to take home. We got lots of alcoholics anyway but atleast 18 year olds can't afford to be alcoholics and drink at home.. too expensive to go out every day to bars and shit unless someone older buys liquor out for you but that's illegal for them to do

In Sweden you can get liquor at bars/clubs when you're 18, but buying it in stores you have to be 20. And the state has a monopoly on selling liquor, wine and beer with over 3.5% alcohol per volume. Some years back though, politicians decided to add to it "if you look like you're 25 years or younger be ready to show ID". If I look like I'm 24 and the staff thinks I look like 24 it means I can buy liquor without showing ID since the age limit is 20. I'm 35 and I still get asked to show ID. It's a waste of time and the staff agrees. But they say they get impromptu controls to test how well a cashier can tell between a 30 year old and a 17 year old trying to look like 30. Because that's a thing apparently... So if you're in Sweden and want to buy booze from the store/Systembolaget, be sure to have your ID with you. Even if you're old in a wheelchair they might suspect you for being a 19 year old.
