So, IF Millenials are entitled, isn't is because the previous generations did not have healthy boundaries? When previous generations asked their parents for money (as kids will do), the parents said 'no'. And they understood that it was their job as a parent to say no, and not the other way around (aka, kids should just be born with high character, I shouldn't need to be taught it).

I hope millenials are better at not denegrating young people as they age. I was born at the tail end of the boomer generation, and now I hear people my own age making horrific comments about millenials. For whatever reason, these same people have forgotten what it was like to be young, and they gloss over some of their own mistakes. As people age, they seem to reflect positively on their own past and make it seem as if young people are destroying the present. Memories get distorted, and somehow improved, over time. Maybe it's just a natural part of aging. I don't like it, and I try not to do it. I hope millenials are more conscious of the criticism they received.

I think that millennials have been put in a more modern situation than older people, so maybe that's why older people judge them more harshly. They didn't have social media when they were 21 years old. Millennial have only adapted to their environment around them. Older people would have done the same if they had the same technology then as we do today.

Yep. My great grandmother had 9 kids. They all hated her. They had no personal relationship from their mother and recieved very little attention on nurturing. The older ones took care of the little ones when they could. She also became meaner and more bitter with every child, and was probably stressed to shit running a house of 9 kids and catering to a husband. ElearningDigest Well, it's great that you could get two jobs and that those two jobs was enough to split rent with someone. Just to put it out there, nobody forced you to go to college. That was your choice. Things are extremely different for different people. Getting a job for 18-year-olds today is NOT as easy as you older folks try to make it out to be. Didn't get any sort of hourly pay until I was 3 years out of high school, and that was weekend sign waving. That job disappeared, and it took two more years to find another hourly job. I'm working a nearly full-time gig, I teach occasionally, and I do freelance music and design. So, why aren't I rich if I'm just working sooo hard? Yeah, you can shut your ignorant mouth.

So rather than do anything about it is easier to blame. We had essentially free education lots of job opportunities and a house you could buy for about 1 years salary. I'm 66 years old now, but in my last few years of work, I ran into a different sort of people. They were offended by everything. It really surprised me at first, and I thought it was just that person or a couple of kids that were new to the world. Later I discovered many of them were. When my mom was at a nursing home they had a Thanksgiving party. My sister went with me to visit mom and I was taking pictures. I saw a little high school gal that worked there and asked her if she wanted her picture taken. She said no so I didn't take one. Later that night I got a call from the manager that the girl had reported me because my asking her made her uncomfortable. Years ago that would not have even been reported. In another example, I said something to a woman about her body and while she did not complain, a young gal thought that was terrible. She reported me and then I got a call later from the temp agency that I was working for suggesting that I quit. I have run into many such examples and I wonder how these kids will make it through life.

Heck, the very reason a huge number of people from my country come to the US as immigrants, particularly in the field of Science is because the millenials are disinterested in things that are challenging. In my country there also is a strong sense of family which sorely lacks among my fellow millenials who think hating their parents is a cool thing to do. That being said, America is or at least was one of the greatest countries there ever was. The American Constitution is one of the best written documents, by some of the smartest and good natured people to ever be in positions of power.

Callum, maybe you should read about how life was in the UK from the 1940s to the 1980s. It was no picnic. Expectation levels are higher now. Most people didn't go out to eat and didn't go on foreign holidays. Yes some might have owned houses but they were poor quality. Bill Wyman's autobiography states that he first bought a house with an inside toilet in the late 60s and early 70s. And as a member of the Rolling Stones it's safe to say he had access to a bit more cash than most.

The fact that your gripes are about job competition and not being able to afford a house (oh the horror!!) only serves to show the unnatural sense of entitlement that is in existence. I do apologise for sounding harsh, I'm sure we would actually agree on many things in a more human setting. The point I am trying to make is that there appears to be a singular lack of awareness regarding how sh*t life was in the past relative to now. And the fact that it takes time to accumulate wealth. The hyper speed of IT/the internet makes it appear that you can get rich in a year or so and this is not the case for most. All it would take is some acknowledgment of the fact that this is the case, and that problems now are not comparable to the grinding poverty experienced by generations that your generation now appear to despise. I'm not saying it is easy for your age group, but the lack of perspective can be quite baffling. Either way, the best of luck to you, I wish you well in your future wherever it takes you.

There is a grey area in regards when the Millennial Generation begins. I've heard many different things, ranging from late 70's/early 80's (which is absurd) up to as late as 1986. Due to such disagreements, people in this "grey area" should feel free to pick an chose which group they identify with. I would say 1986-2004 makes more sense. 1982-2004 is a HUGE age range and covers a lot of people, as the speaker states. And many born in 1982 "have CHILDREN born in 2004", and they share different values and experiences.

I think I know a fitting quote that represents the attitude towards the current generation. I find it frustrating that me and all my friend are belittled in every online community. We are always the dumb kids who are spoiled and stupid. Yes, I am at fault for using more advanced technology or liking a form of entertainment the former doesn't. Before us they were fighting the system for rock music and different clothing, but spit our feet for cellular phones and the internet. Their generation had high levels of institutional racism, acceptable discrimination, zero LGBT rights. Even beating children was not really that bad back then. It was just considered "old fashioned discipline." I wish people were more accepting and understanding of everyone around them. There is really no point to this comment, it isn't going to change anything. Sometimes it just makes you feel a bit better to vent your thoughts.

I think this she was being too gentle and nice in her speech. The system is dysfunctional and we're noticing. It's not a matter of "being young and struggling to grow up and adjusting expectations," it's more that people are starting to realize what is important and what is not. In other words, things are changing. And that is a glorious thing. Climbing the corporate ladder may be some people's goals, but it isn't for everyone. Working shorter hours should be the norm... studies do show 8 hours is not really productive (and why is it we work 8 hours a day anyway? Totally arbitrary and especially at this point in time). Getting paid more is "logical" when you think about the rising cost of living. Doing a non-paid internship? That is preposterous. Most of them are illegal. The one's that are legal are considered less 'valuable.' People, not just millennials (there is no such category, it only serves to divide people more), shouldn't have to struggle so much just to survive. Change the system fundamentally or sink slowly, technology doesn't wait, the environment doesn't wait. It's our choice. Our = everyone. And whatever we choose will have a huge effect on the next generation, so we must choose wisely.

Are we supposed to be interested in work? For many, work is just something they do because they need money to live. For me, life isn't about working all of the time. Work is a vehicle I use to move through life. Some folks have great careers and dream jobs, but they are a minority. Not everyone has the resources, both financial and mental to become a doctor or a lawyer, or whatever high-grade professional occupation. Does not being primarily focused on a job that cares little about me, make me lazy? I don't think so. Life does not equal work. Donnelly millienials were originally called latchkey kids, our baby boomer parents worked all the time and I honestly believe that’s why you get some of the stereotypes associated with our generation. A mass of people who grew up almost molding themselves as time passes with little input on the parental side due to said parents not being there for them.

I’m 19 but when I watched a video of people my age and younger learning how to use a can opener for the first time I was surprised and sad at the same time.... I think the main problem is why didn’t parents teach us. There’s more blame on the millennial but what about the parents who raised them? Also like she said people grow up and change. Apart of the problem of why millennials end up staying at home is because there’s not enough jobs or you have to have like a thousand years of education. My older sister who’s 24 couldn’t find a job for awhile because the places she went to either said she wasn’t qualified or she was over qualified.... where’s the middle point? But the worse problem now is that you have to be a minority just to get a job because many companies are trying to make a quota. I’m a woman and I don’t want a company to just hire me because I am one; I want them to hire me because I’m right for the job and I’m qualified to do it.

Discrimination has been around before I was born. I know I am Puerto Rican and did not get the promotion for that reason. Some minorities were hire for the reason you mention. If not for laws minority would not be hire or promoted

@@nelmat8326 when we go to school, teachers dont just expect us to learn things. They explain it. A parent should explain/demonstrate how to do things to their kids. I love my parents and overall, they were amazing at being parents but one thing that will always make me sad is the fact that I had to teach myself how to shave. I dont completely blame my dad since he works and comes home tired but I waited weeks, asking him multiple times to teach me and he never did. I didn't have that moment with him. Sure he taught me other things, but a lot of parents miss out on those teachable moments then get upset that their children dont know.

So 20 years later I hate how everyone is throwing Milennials under the proverbial bus knowing full well that "they" won't touch my generation because we're middle/upper management: WE are "them." I find this type of trend piece damaging. I am getting older. Who's going to take care of Me when I need care? You and people younger than you are going to care for me and the boomers. WHY start that relationship by accusing you of destroying America for doing the same things I did when I was your age? I know a fair share of Milennials and I like the people I know. We share more than a few values like being a good partner, parent and community member. I'd rather help you with things you need to know and you can help me with tons of things I don't know. Millennials problems are not just because they are young. They are narcissists, self absorbed, selfish, and entitled. As a Gen X who is now a manager, I can see how the millennials workers behave extremely differently - lack of focus, lack of interest to learn and pick up new things to improve, expects salary raise first instead of thinking about how he/she can improve or contribute more, takes holidays when the team is facing tremendous workload (books the flight ticket before applying for the leave). Millenials are not the same as other generations!

'89 here. Millennials just found a system and a market they coulnd't access to. Not just because we were told to study and study until we're 28 to "have a great life" (filled with expectations), we also found a system in a state of collapse and decay that turned its back on us. We've been educated for a system that stopped existing some time ago. If we could we would have matured sooner. It's just that the system won't allow us to develop as adults as soon as it did with older generations. That's pretty much it. We're no mystery.

Boomer here (b. 1952). I enjoyed this clip a lot. On the other hand, I feel like I must be entirely out of the mainstream. I don't believe that millennials are narcissistic or entitled as a group or really any different than any other generation I have seen, except that their experiences have been different. I wanted their experiences to be different, and I didn't think about whether that would be good or bad, because I believed in them the same as I believed in us. We were called self-centered and reminded repeatedly that if we thought the world owed us a living we had another thing coming. Sounds pretty closely related to narcissism and entitlement, no? On the other hand, my beliefs and attitudes haven't changed that much, but my methodologies have. The obvious routes didn't seem to be available, so I looked for other ways to get there. I don't want experience to change the ideals and beliefs of millennials in that way. That is something I call cynicism.

You're severely out of touch with interacting with them...the narcissism is sociopathic and the delusion beyond any gen before. They've lost touch with reality due to coddling and propaganda and social media has given them a distorted sense of humanity. Their concepts/beliefs vs Reality are so great due to lack of REAL experience.....they live in a great illusion. She's wrong: they are NOT the same as every other gen....even her "talk" is shallow.

Here here! I am not a millennial, but many of those I have met give me reason to hope for the future. The stars in this cohort are some of the most worldly, imaginative, and civic minded people you will ever meet. And in fairness, they should be skeptical as the world their parents and grandparents have left for them is bankrupt and broken. Surprisingly I love this generation they are total sweethearts. My generation was so rude to older people and those kids treat me like an equal but in a nicer way. I take classes in community college in the art department ( metalsmithing) so I’ve been interacting for a few years and they are just a pleasure. I know the difference because I taught for 28 years so I’ve seen many generations and this is the best. They aren’t very tough and not much was expected of them but that’s the parents fault and I do worry that they won’t work hard enough and won’t have a retirement ( I lived on nothing and put away literally only $100 of that was all I had) but as human beings they are wonderful.

Hi thanks for everything you said. I will say that even those of us with decent jobs or multiple jobs have a hard time just surviving now. It doesn’t matter if we hardly eat sleep or socialize. Many of us have accepted that things as they are now will make us work till we die, or become too disabled to move. I think it’s part of the reason we’re so openly fighting the status quo. It seems like there’s no possibility of success unless things change. So let’s make it. Studies say on average an American worker works more hours a week than a medical peasant living as a surf. It should be enough to survive in a first world country right? If it’s not something has to be wrong. I wish more people would understand.. and that the only reason a group would act similarly is because we’re a product of our environment. A lot of it was what we needed to be, and some of it was the pessimism and burnout surrounding our environment. If something is wrong it doesn’t do good to complain about the people, but to plan on fixing the soil that feed the plant.

One possible reason they became more entitled was the trend to make everyone a winner on sports days and other activities. That helped set their expectations too high for the real world. New generations should be given a more varied realistic experience to better prepare them.

There are those really smart kids, there are those really crazy kids, and there's that bully who keeps shoving you into a locker. I think it really, really important to separate The Media from regular folks. I am a regular person and I have a huge appreciation for your generation. Maybe because I have two sons who are M's. Shinji Kataoka I am a parent of a Millennial. My other friends with kids are experiencing the same issues I have. Of the dozen or so families.....about 30% dodged the boomerang kids. Problems I found.... -Fail to save money for bills coming up. Daughter and friend's kids would spend the money in their pockets instead of saving for bills. Parents becomes the bank. -A common link found among the kids is bad credit. They are clueless about saving money to pay bills. Money in hand is meant to be spent - AND FAST. (information is based only on the kids I know...others may not have this problem) -A job must be worth while....stimulating (can't be hard or boring). The kids end up quitting because they have the bank of Mom and Dad. -Lazy. The kids have no time to help around the house. This issue is a hit and miss with the other parents. -Angry at the parents for placing rules on the situation. They want money and a place to live.....However, they don't want accountability. Stay out of my life. Stop judging me. Stop asking me about...jobs/education/future plans. I am an adult now leave me alone. Just let me live my life. Bam she leaves to head to a party. (part of the problem belongs to the enabler- one or both parents) Note: Stress is the only thing that flourishes in these households.

Lee Walters, i gotta give credit to you for raising your children in this tough times, especially what's going on in your household. Yes, there will be rebellious offsprings who will go up against rules that parents establish. However, jobs, laziness, savings and such are part of many problems that millenials face today. pop cultures from older generation vs today also is a problem. kids mind their own business when it comes to listening to music (nu rock, rap, j-pop, k-pop, trans-techno, etc) and playing video games, whereas older generations what prime time cop dramas, listening to their generation of music (mostly '80s) and reading suspense novels. this is where older generations and millenials head butt against each other, most of the time. I'd say: ENOUGH!. let us be the way we are when it comes to pop cultures. as for responsibilities, yes, we do need discipline. but please, leave us alone when it comes to animes, mangas, video games, fb, tumblr, twitter, music (j-pops, k-pops, especially), and other hobbies. we read different novels like Maze Runners, Divergent, etc. but so what? it's not like we are hurting ourselves.

I started working when I was 14 if I wanted anything I had to buy it myself. I came from a very big family. My father always said if you work for the man, give 110%. You agreed to work for the money offered. I paid my own way through college and other education systems. I served in the United States Navy. Worked my way up the ladder, going to school, earning my way. There was no cell phone, I had REAL friends, NOT Facebook friends, Yes, I have a computer but I don't live by it. Now when I visit the doctor's office everyone has their heads down on a smartphone. No one talks to one another anymore.
