Hot 103/97 between 1987 -1991 was the best years for Dance music 🎶 🎵 🔥 the formula was incredible until around mid 1992 when they were changing its format to HIP HOP and R&B which was a complete horror show for me and others who loved this great station.

The death of freestyle hurt Hot 97 a lot. The ratings tanked, jocks left and the station (sadly) went a different direction. You should check out clips of KTU when it signed on in 1996. It’s what Hot 97 would have sounded like if it made it past 1993.

Working at a CHR/Hot AC station in the early 90s was so much fun. Running the board manually. Working the phones. It was chaos. Everything was about attitude. Bill Lee and Jo Jo Cookin' Kincaid in San Diego (Q106) will forever be my personal favourites. I still remember Bill Lee's outro..."End of the show. Mr Lee got to G-O. Until tomorrow, stay calm, kiss your mom, ban the bomb, do the best you can, and remember...I love you man".

Watching vids like this reminds me of why I wanted to be a DJ when I was a kid. WLOL/99.5 in the Twin Cities (where Bill worked for a time in the early 80s) used the Hot 97 imaging package at the end of their run. Being a kid, I didn’t appreciate some of the classic voices I would hear like Bill, Greg Thunder, Charlie (Bobby) Wilde, Alan Kabel and a host of others while they passed thru the twin towns, I just knew that they were the coolest people in whatever room they were in.

I recall dipping in about the time of the Giant Steps song... And I also had the pleasure of listening to Broadway Bill Lee when he was here in Denver on 96 KPKE, The Peak. And...Greg Thunder was in Denver on Alice 105.9 for a while. One of the great things about Denver is that it's usually the step right before someone goes big.

That is cool. At the risk of sounding melancholy, I REALLY miss 80's radio. We had KPKE, Y108 and Q103 here in Denver. When I moved to NY, it was Hot 103/97, Z100 and Power 95 WPLJ....occasionally WPIX 101.9 if I had trouble getting the HOT103 signal. It's so funny, because I had been in the UK for Thanksgiving. And I was kinda needing a fix of US FM music. I can literally remember driving past the Budweiser plant near Newark Airport and hearing Giant Steps on the radio. It's amazing: Radio and music can take you to a very specific experience like no other medium.

This is a throwback to an age of amazing radio. Bill Lee is a radio legend, and sadly, one of the last great top 40 jocks. Unfortunately, they all sound so canned and fake nowadays. I love this video, because it shows him hustling around the studio, between and during his breaks, working the board, the tapes and the phones. Sounds archaic today in the age of computer automation, but that's how it was done, even in 1989. BTW - I grew up in the Twin Cities. Back in the mid-80s, Bill was the afternoon guy on WLOL in Minneapolis. The guy at the end of the video, Greg Thunder, was the night guy on the rival station, KDWB. Greg was obviously influenced by Bill, as he employed a similar rapping, rhyming style. Cool to see them both at the same station in New York. Both great talents.

@JornBjerregaard Жыл бұрын
I think a lot of stations across the U.S. “borrowed” from Z100. The station went from worst to first in less than 3 months when they started in 1983. Check out Scott Shannon who was the PD and morning jock when the station began. He invented the morning zoo format and basically revolutionized radio with his ideas and imaging/jingles. Almost every station in NY broadcast from Empire State Building but he was the first to promote it on air, and it had a huge impact. A lot of other radio stations, on air talents and producers were very much inspired by this.
