She's one of the finest female rockers of all time. Right up there at the top with the other greats.

This was a live performance, but the audio used was the studio version from 1977... Ann Wilson (lead vocals) was one of the first women to front a classic rock band, and her younger sister Nancy Wilson (rhythm & acoustic guitars/ vocals) was the first female rock guitarist. Back in the 70's, rock music was a man's game... and the big bands were - Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, etc... Heart was formed in the late 60's by guitarist Roger Fisher, and at some point in the early 70's, he met singer Ann Wilson and insisted that she be their lead singer... Ann was a huge fan of Led Zeppelin, and wanted that variety w/ Heart - the heavy and the acoustic. At a local show, Ann Wilson met Roger's brother Mike Fisher and they fell in love... She left w/ him to live in Canada, where he was dodging the Vietnam war draft. The band soon joined her there in 1973... and around 1974, Ann's sister Nancy Wilson went to join her sister and the band Heart... Oddly enough, Nancy became romantically involved w/ guitarist Roger Fisher... so it was 2 sisters in love w/ 2 brothers for a while. Heart was signed while they were gigging in Canada in 1974... They recorded their debut album 'Dreamboat Annie' that year and it soon got a US release in 1975 and went gold there. Heart was working on a 2nd album 'Magazine' in 1977 when their label marketed the Wilson sisters as 'lesbian lovers'... The band was so infuriated that they left the label and signed w/ CBS Records in America and released the album 'Little Queen' ... 'Barracuda' became a huge single, and it was inspired by the riff of a Led Zeppelin song "Achilles' last stand"... Ann Wilson said she wrote the lyrics after a record executive asked about her 'lover' and was referring to her sister Nancy... That was her retaliation. 'Little Queen' went platinum in sales and Heart became a huge live attraction... Sadly, both romances w/ Roger and Mike Fisher ended... Guitarist Roger Fisher ended up getting fired by Heart after he was unable to cope w/ the breakup w/ Nancy.

To answer your question, I believe this is the studio version of the song that has been synced with a video recording of the band doing the same song live. It's a great song by a great, and very prolific, band. Ann Wilson was one of the best vocalists of the classic rock era. The woman playing guitar and singing backup vocals is her sister Nancy. "Magic Man" and "Crazy On You" are a couple of their other top hits. For Janis Joplin. I would recommend "Me and Bobby McGee" or "Piece of My Heart".

I think that Ann Wilson is one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time of any gender. Also by Heart on your must-react list: Crazy on You Magic Man If you have already reacted to Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, then you should react to the Wilson sisters performing that song in 2012 at the Kennedy Center during a tribute to some musicians, including Led Zeppelin. Now in her 70s, Ann Wilson can still sing with no sign of fading away.

And be sure to watch Heart's induction ceremony in rock'n'roll Hall of fame, you'll see them from their start in the 70's until 2013--they still rock, even past 60 y. old. More female from the 60's=Janis Joplin's ball & chain (Live from Monterey 1967), or Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane (try White rabbit).

This is a great rock band that started in the 70's. Ann Wilson has one of the most powerful female voices. And her sister Nancy can play a mean guitar. They have had so many great hits such as "Crazy on You", "Magic Man", "What About Love", "Never", "Dog & Butterfly", "These Dreams", "Alone" etc. In 2012 Ann & Nancy performed at the Kennedy Center Honors in a tribute to Led Zeppelin doing their classic song "Stairway To Heaven".

Heard “Magic Man” for the first time that way and was totally enthralled and in love with their voices. There’s a full length concert from when they played at WSU in Pullman WA; it’s worth seeing. They really are/were that good live, even way back when they were starting out.

Heart has re-invented themselves a couple of different times, but this is their iconic and best, IMHO, version. Ann and Nancy Wilson are two of the most rockin' women in history, truly legendary. Unfortunately, the rest of the band tends to get over-looked at times. Check out their "Dreamboat Annie", "Magic Man", and for one from the 80's, "All I Want to Do is Make Love to You".

She is so fascinating live but her studio recordings are so good as well. Check out her cover of the famous George Gershwin song, Summertime, the studio cut. What she does with her voice on that is amazing, and at the end she slides down this interval and the harmonics in her voice form a perfect interval above that follows right down with it and it is like a beautiful descant singing part.

Janis Joplin - "(Oh Lord, won't you buy me a) Mercedes Benz" Also "Piece of My Heart." Look up the rock band, "Fanny," another '70s female band. Joni Mitchell is one of the most important voices of the '60s and '70s. Pat Benatar was a tiny ball of energy from the '80s. Another must listen is Heart's cover of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" (live version video). It is phenomenal. Ann Wilson was in her early 60s when she belted it out in front of President Obama and the Led Zeppelin band members. If you like female bass players, look up Tal Wilkenfeld, a child prodigy who has played with a zillion rock legends over the last 20 years. Catch her work with Jeff Beck, "Live at Ronnie Scotts," a masterpiece concert. Then check out her albums. Polish jazz player, Kinga Głyk, is another bass wonder woman who kicks ass.

Ann Wilson revealed in interviews that the song was about Heart's anger towards Mushroom Records, who as a publicity stunt released a made-up story of an incestuous affair involving Ann and her sister Nancy Wilson. The song particularly focuses on Ann's rage towards a male radio promoter who came up to her after a concert asking how her "lover" was. She initially thought he was talking about her boyfriend, band manager Michael Fisher. After he revealed he was talking about her sister Nancy, Ann became outraged, went back to her hotel room, and wrote the original lyrics of the song.[3]
