I have been fishing for 30 years and I've NEVER caught a Musky, let alone one that crazy big. Sometimes it's just the luck of the draw. I have been fishing down at my local dam for the last 20 years off and on and I had been targeting hybrid striper bass for months. One day I walked down and threw a bluegill swimbait in the waterfall on my first cast and BAM! It grabbed it as soon as the water. I reeled him in and it was a 12.2 lb 29" striper. There were 4 guys standing next to me that had been down there for hours and hadn't caught anything, they were so pissed off, but they still came over and helped me. It just goes to show you that you never know.

Nothing to apologize for. Up here in Michigan I'm a diehard Muskie Fisherman and you did everything right considering you didn't intend on catching this fish. Well done on bass gear, no leader and cheap hooks! You didn't have a Muskie net so you did your best to land that fish. My only recommendation is to properly hold and handle a fish of that size with a better grip using what we call a "leech lake lip lock." What you did was close but slide that hand under the full gill plate avoiding touching their gills and then using your thumb on the outside of gill plate just outside of the Y jawbone to have a secure grip. The fish was fine but more concerned about your thumb. If that fish would have thrashed or headshaked you could have very easily cut your thumb really bad! Their teeth are super sharp!! Also, it's possible to lose your grip possibly dropping the fish. Only recommendation I see and don't worry about the negative stuff. I've been a Muskie Fisherman for a really long time, always promote CPR and proper handling with the proper tools. You did the very best you could and should be proud. Great job!!

Awesome catch from shore! I've caught a few smaller muskie from shore but only managed to land one. In a pinch you can also use your rod as a measuring stick. Not as easy with a huge muskie but try to pick a guide to line up with its mouth so that the tail is close to the handle of the rod. There is more unique features at that end of the rod to remember exactly where the tail ends. Maybe take a quick picture so you can verify when you measure your rod later that you are going from the correct guide to spot on the handle.

Gorgeous, been to Canada on fishing trips from Colorado 3 years now for a total of 6 weeks, I've only ever seen a couple. Dream fish.

It’s a solid 48” fo show. Great fish! We all freak out a little in the moment and maybe don’t make the best choices but you took good care of the fish. She’ll be there next year for ya right at the 50” mark.

Well you got an awesome fish, and some little kid gets a nice christmas present. That's what I call a win-win. Nice work, keep it up!
