A trick for sap on your hands instead of mineral spirits is to use dab of margarine. Cheap and it strips the sap off. If you use a little before handling, the sap wont stick near as bad and wipes of. Dont use a ton and your hands wont feel greasy. Might be easier on the skin too :) Great video, thanks for the content!!

You won't get a 6 x 6 out of a 7" diameter log. 7" X 0.71 = a 4.97" square cant. OR... a 6" cant needs a log 6" X 1.41 = 8.46" in diameter. These formulas can make your life so much easier. Dave

I’m curious if you would need to air dry beams like this? I’m asking because I was thinking of putting up a workshop in the spring and wondering if I could just mill up some red pine I have at my fathers property or if they would need to dry?
@activeoutdoorssawmillediti7736 Жыл бұрын
Everything I've read or have seen about timber frame or post and beam construction is that using green timbers is common. Besides...if wood dries at a rate of one inch per year, I'd have to wait 6 years before I used them. Some cracking and slight twisting was okay with me and adds to the character of the rough cut timbers. Mike
@eu4ia3652 жыл бұрын
Can you use green wood if it's thick enough for deck supports? Say 6x6 posts.
@activeoutdoorsoffgridediti59892 жыл бұрын
The correct answer is no unless the lumber has been graded and stamped. Having said that plenty of people use their sawmill wood for structural projects. Another issue will be the fact that it’s contacting the ground and is not pressure treated. There are ways to get around that though.
