Thanks for a well paced and presented video. Really useful information on how you approached measuring and maintaining the correct geometry
@ScottHamilton-ys2cm9 ай бұрын
So many people focus on the task of scraping, and not how you to check the geometry of the machine, and the progress of the work, which is the most critical part of scraping. You did an excellent job of emphasizing that. I've been scraping for over 40 years, and teaching machine tool alignment and fit (scraping) for the last ten. I must say, your methods are unique, but quite effective. Keep up the good work.

It is interesting how were made first machine tools when there were no machine tools? It is an interesting question to discuss

Indeed, and never realize these first machine tools builds better machine tools.

Love the level holder, going to make one this week! What dia round bar did you use?

Nice work. Do you think when the machine was designed the knee was purposely out of square a tenth or two? To compensate for gravity taking up all the gib clearance and causing a tilt in one direction?

Normally they are but mine is off when I measure it from side

What spotting die are you using, the contrast look very good !

Most likely "Dykem" it's what all machinist use for rebuild.

Thank you so much for making a video showing your measurement process. I've begun my own journey on rebuilding a Bridgeport clone, and it's really helpful to see someone else's thought process. I haven't watced part 2, yet, but I think your initial measurement of the knee squareness was problematic. If the face of the granite square was not perfectly parallel to the face of the way, any sideways movement way would change the reading even if the knee was perfectly square. That said, the measurement with the knee on the column is the ground truth.

Glad you found this helpful, I had lot of fun doing it and end result is very satisfying. Word of advice, don’t rush.

I was wondering about that as well. Perhaps pushing the square up against some gauge pins would have solved that issue? But I'm still not understanding how you make sure the dovetails are perpendicular to the column. In any case it's a fantastic video.

12:31 - Great explanation on the topic. How did you get the BP to be on it's side like that? Scraping the gibs is the most difficult part in rebuild.
@allenklingsporn6993 Жыл бұрын
Nice job! The Gibs and interior dovetail surfaces were maybe a small waste of time, since they're just a variable adjustment tool. As long as you have as much adjustment as you need with the adjusting screw, there's really no need to do anything.

I have heard better contact with the gib helps improve vibration and rigidity
@brandontscheschlog10 ай бұрын
Very cool! Why didn’t you use the 45° angle on your camelback to check the dovetails of the column?

One thousandth of an inch = one "thou", one ten-thousandth of an inch = one tenth Even the abbreviations in the imperial systems are aggravating. I work in both, and it drives me up a wall sometimes.

Nearly end was no very nice measurement.for do it need a square level ,and u can check that before,when you scraping
