Milling ONE HUNDRED 2x4s for our Solar Kiln Build | Ep 4

For the floor assembly on our solar kiln, we chose to use pressure treated wood since the skids will be in contact with the ground. But when it comes to the walls and roof structure, we'll be constructing it much like a typical stick-framed building - in this case, with 2x4s. We milled over hundred pine 2x4s and stacked them for the winter to be ready for continuing solar kiln build in the spring.

Diana just turn the key. All kidding aside do push-ups, rows, curls and any tricep, deltoid and traps and lats exercises. These help minimize injuries as well. Keep up the good work.

@Adventurous Way Thanks for the videos and inspiration! To start a pull-start engine try to pull faster towards the end of the pull that at the beginning. It's more intuitive to start strong and kind of fizzle out during the pull, but, to turn the engine over, it requires a threshold angular momentum best achieved when you accelerate its rotation. Also, Try yelling "HEE - YAH" while you pull!

I rotated my pull rope so I'm pulling on the same side as the throttle control. That way I can give it a little throttle while I pull the starter rope. Starts much easier this way, especially in the winter.

Oooh, that's an interesting idea! I always wondered how people were managing to give the engine some throttle while starting it when they're on opposite sides of the saw head!

What a great decision to buy your own mill, you create the lumber you need with little waste, no waiting for transport, milling and transporting back. It has to be fun figuring out what to mill, all the calculating and planning. Very satisfying, I'm sure its cost effective too. Thanks for sharing your adventures and dreams, I'm loving it! I was trying to see if Diane used the same stance and left hand placement for bracing as Matt for starting the mill, looks identical except his hand was more centered and above instead of to the left, I don't know if that mattered. Diane did have the same stance. That is my uneducated analysis, lol. I'm sure someone will give some experienced help with that.

Love haw hard you guys are working to make you dreams come true. I saw on another channel "bushradical" in his mill video a log turner. You really need one of thoes so you don't have to use your tractor all the time. I think it could help. Just a thought. I've never cut a log in my life.

Tip for being able to start that engine? i think one of those resistance exercise bands would help you build some more upper body muscles. it will take some time and if you don't use them they will disappear quickly. As far as technique i don't think there is one other then pull till the dawgs engage then pull as hard as you can.
@AdventurousWay
@AdventurousWay 2 жыл бұрын
Yup, I definitely need to work on upper body strength!

We definitely have saved a fortune milling this lumber ourselves and it's an amazing sense of accomplishment. But these two by fours are for framing walls, we still need to mill a lot of lumber for siding walls.

Howdy you two ... you guys are certainly working hard to meet your goal ... good job ... I think Diana just needs a little more leverage to get that beast started. Maybe put a 8" or so platform on your build list and get her up in the air a bit more so she can use what little body weight she has. Now enjoy so warm weather and we'll see ya next time. Larry

Will have to make sure the engine is fully lowered when I try starting it. If that's not enough I will try standing on something to see if that helps.

Don't try to pull start with just your arm -- grab the handle (two hands work just fine) and pull with your upper body. You can twist a bit a bit also (don't like... wrench your back our or anything). The key is to accelerate as you pull out, which is what gets the motor spinning.
@AdventurousWay
@AdventurousWay 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Hadn't thought of trying with two hands, will definitely give that a go.

I think that sounds like a good idea, but I am like Diana, I try, but haven't succeeded. I had to get an electric push button start for the snow blower, and have to rely on extension cords to power anything. If you make progress, please share it with us! Bushradical's wife, Brook Whipple, used a chain saw with ease. He suggests bracing the chainsaw with your foot to pull the cord, but you can't do that when the pull start is fixed up high. Maybe stand on the truck bed? I have no idea, don't do what I say, if Diana can't start the saw mill, I couldn't, either, lol. Would it be dangerous to stand on something higher, to be able to access your core strength?

What tractor are you using and what’s it’s lifting capacity? I’d imagine some logs are over 2000 pounds
@AdventurousWay
@AdventurousWay Жыл бұрын
We're using a Kubota L3901 with an LA525 front loader capable of lifting about 1,100lbs or so. A few logs were heavier than that so we had to trim them down before we could move them around. Fortunately, most of our largest logs are pine, so not as dense as hard maple or some of our other hardwoods. I should also add that we have loaded rear tires and a ballast box on the tractor, but even so we had to take it very steady moving the big logs around.
