Milling a large sugar pine log on a Woodmizer LT15 sawmill. Sugar Pine is the worlds largest pine, I believe it’s the most beautiful as well. I milk them into lumber and live edge slabs. This log is blue stained, mostly in the sapwood.
You can watch the first video where we cut this log open even it though it was too big to cut open.

I would love to get a tour of your sugar pines... and while your identifying the sugar pines... it would be swell if you could tell us how to differentiate between other coniferous/ evergreen trees... ( pine vs fir vs hemlock vs spruce... you get the idea)!!! I enjoy your channel and look forward to your videos... I think you may be "blessed" with the same sense of humor as I am... I'm always chuckling at the little "Groaners" you leave behind.

If you are chuckling at them instead of groaning, we probably do have a similar sense of humor. I will put your vote in for the sugar pine tour. Good idea to include the other trees.

I’d love to see your sugar pines. Here in Maine we only have White pine, Red, Scotch and Jack so everything you have out west is different. I’d also love to see how you harvest and process the seeds for eating. Our pines don’t produce big seeds so the whole idea is weird to me. but i love to learn things about Nature. I enjoy your videos and your humor and knowledge.

When I lived in northern and central Cali, sugar pine was a favorite of mine too. The trunks are cylindrical, not fluted or irregular. That makes the five or six ft. trunk more inpressive. When I moved to Virginia I brought some big sugar pine cones.

Hmmm, I noticed that at 6:55, no jacket. However, at 8:45, jacket... Seems tempting the weather gods played out against you... We don't have Sugar pine in Linn County, we do have Valley Ponderosa, which also gets the blue stain. I'd love to mill some of the "Cant-Can" for use in Barred owl and Western screech owl boxes. "Cant-Can" not the cheesiest, but approaching the line. Cheers and thanks for another educational video -- showing that us guys commonly defy the recommendations.

Yeah hate to admit it but I can get even cheesier than that. those pitchy pieces that came out of the middle would probably be good for bird nests since they would resist rot. I do wonder if the weather gods are amused by making me take my coat on and off.

Great looking sugar pine. I was didn’t see the apples ? I’d like to see sugar pine tour. The water test sure brung out the blue stain . That’s one nice stack of boards. Are them all 4/4 boards ? Thanks for sharing
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Жыл бұрын
I thought the apples were there but maybe Dave’s wombat came and ate them. They are 4/4ish. On the West Coast we don’t usually measure softwood in quarters. We can get away with taking a little out for saw kerf.

Amazing boards... and such a nice job stacking... I wonder if the finished quality would benefit if you rolled some paint over the end grains?
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Жыл бұрын
It would probably benefit. I have never done it because most of the time I sell lumber before it has a chance to dry. The lumber I have cut from the rest of this tree over the last year has been very stable. It doesn’t crack much at all. I also cut it a little long so the ends can be trimmed off.

We used to do that with Ponderosa. My mom told us about it when we were kids. It was the hard glassy globs of pitch. It had a nice flavor. My dad told us sugar pine was a laxative so we didn’t try that. Apparently it is but now I know you need a lot more of it than that to have those effects.

Yes. I'd love to see your Sugar Pines. You probably dont have big ones there...I already told you I did a dbh measurement of over 18 ft on a sugar pine in Sierra Co @ Brandy City (USFS Land now). I bet that tree is 500 years old. My mother was born in Brandy City in 1916. The area was a hydraulic mining town. I measured that tree and others in1998/99 for my forestry class...

How long does it take for the log to turn blue?
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Жыл бұрын
When the bark beetles attack the tree they introduce the spores for the fungus that turns it blue. By the time the tree is dead it can be already starting to turn blue. This one died summer before last.

Been within a stone’s throw of unhappy Grizzlies, hundreds of black bears, arms reach of bull moose and elk, rattle snakes, trapped in the middle of nowhere lightning all around being pummeled be thumb sized hail, 200 ft up in a tree and a thousand other unhealthy things, but the most scared I’ve ever been is hiking through a sugar pine forest when the squirrels are dropping green cones from a 100 ft height! lol 😁👍🏼

I'll throw my hat in the ring for that, im going to write a hot to trot piece about some suggestive sugarpine and alder grain; I hope some fellas don't get the wrong idea.
