Жыл бұрын

In this video I show you the property I recently bought. I bought some forest land on the coast that has heavy timber and forest on it. I have many projects for this property Including managing the forest. I will be starting a firewood business. I may even bring my Woodmizer LT 15 Sawmill. I also am considering using my mill and the timber on the place to build an off grid tiny house or small cabin.

As soon as I saw those berries I knew that they were blackcaps! I used to love going out to my grandparents property and finding those, and eating them. I live in Washington state and they are everywhere up in the woods, at least the area that my grandparents property is

You have a nice tract of timber land there. I don't have a saw mill, but I also enjoy thinning out stands of trees that are too thick, cutting out roads, etc. on my land here in Alabama. It's interesting to see the forests of Oregon. Your videos make me feel like I'm riding in the truck and walking through the woods with a good friend.

@WilsonForestLands

Thanks Ed! Yes, I have considered adding a drone. One day maybe I will consider it so seriously it will actually happen. Now I’m focused on learning how to be on camera, remembering to turn the camera on, etc. after I figure out those basics, a drone will probably be a great addition.

Thanks. I have had a cabin building series in the back of my mind for a long time. That idea was for the other property where my mill is. I sometimes think about it for this one too, or maybe just an RV pad.

Beautiful place -- if it were mine, I'd name it "Creekside" or "Pepperwood." Alas, Linn County has no coastal access... Enjoy those coastal temps while we swelter here in the Willamette Valley.
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Жыл бұрын
I had to cross some county lines to get coastal access. At least you are not in the Rogue Valley where it was 114° yesterday. Now it looks like the smoke may start drifting in there.
@lpeterman
@lpeterman Жыл бұрын
@@WilsonForestLands It is 95°+ up here; and the haze is a sort of a Silicon Valley grey/brown murk coming up on the southern winds. Not as bad as the Beachie Creek smoke and ash, but, ugh...

Nice piece of green. It’s a shame when they clear cut like that. I think it can make sense in huge swatches of land like helijobs, but I wish they’d selectively cut land like yours.
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin. Yes it was a shame to see that nice stand of trees go. Although they do grow quickly in that area. Wait until I go back there this summer and show you the damage that happened over the winter next to the clear cut.

Looks like a nice piece of property. How cold does it get in the winter?
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Жыл бұрын
Winter lows are typically in the 30s and 40’s. Occasionally getting down to the upper 20s. The inland property where the sawmill is actually gets a little colder. The ocean keeps temperatures more moderated on the coast.
@Shifffyy

Man that makes me miss living in the valley and cutting up in the Willamette forest. Miss the Doug fir. Is your only property access through the property that was clear cut? What keeps the trees from growing in those meadows? Or were they mown by the previous owners
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Жыл бұрын
There are a couple other ways to get in but that is by far the best way. When I go back to that property this summer, I’m going to have a big mess to deal with to open that road up. That clear cut triggered a lot of blow downs. There is a lot of open grass prairie in that area surrounding that property. It is believed the natives burned it frequently which kept the open grassland. Sinc that stopped Doug fir is gradually encroaching into those areas. I think the meadow was just a remnant of that that hasn’t been grown over yet.

Congrats! We are looking at buying timberland in Washington but don’t know if we can bring our tiny home there or if we would have to convert an acre of it to normal property. Any advice?
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Жыл бұрын
I don’t know about Washington. In Oregon, it’s difficult to get a dwelling permit on zoned timberland unless it’s at least 160 acres. If it’s at least 160 acres you can apply for one large tract forest dwelling permit per 160 contiguous acres or 200 non-contiguous acres. I was able to get one of those permits on a property I have but they said flat out no I can’t live in a tiny house on my own property. A dwelling must meet a certain minimum square foot requirement, have the proper rooms, proper appliances, etc. basically a normal house. They did say they would allow me to apply for a permit for up to 90 days to live in a self contained RV while doing forestry activities. I have talked to people in the tiny house movement around here. At this point with tiny houses, it’s just don’t ask don’t tell. Hopefully it’s easier for you in Washington or you can find something that doesn’t have timberland zoning.

Why would loggers cut a massive tree like that and leave it to rot ? Seams such a waste for both loggers expense to cut, buck, yarder to landing, then buck again, then just leave. For the tree it’s obviously bad deal.
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands 6 ай бұрын
It has big knots, a forked top, not the kind of log mills would pay much for or even want. They cut all the trees down including the poor quality ones so they can grow the type of trees they want in its place.
