Have you heard of the Million Dollar Highway? It’s a stretch of road on US Highway 550 in southwestern Colorado. Although no one can validate the true background to the name, three theories exist:
1. It costs $1,000,000 to expand and pave the highway in 1920.
2. One visitor finished the road and said, “You’d have to pay me a million dollars to do that again”.
3. Every way you look it’s a million dollar view.
No matter which theory is correct, one thing is certainly true - this is a beautiful road. But one, we feel, should be enjoyed by your vehicle - and not in your RV. We enjoy filming our drives with our 38’ motorhome on many mountain passes to help empower people to drive it themselves, but for the Million Dollar Highway we feel it isn’t safe for you or other travelers with an RV.
Our latest video shows our drive on Hwy 550 from Silverton to Ouray. We also provide map details for alternate routes and camping options.
The highway has also been nicknamed “Highway to Hell”.

We are taking this route the last week of June 2023 from Durango...is driving north on 550 the safest all the way to Ridgeway?

No, we don’t take 550. We go around through Dolores and Telluride, and then catch 550 north of Ouray to Ridgway.

Can you please recommend any dispersed car camping (not paid campgrounds ) in and around San Juan Mountain National Forest- or provide a link . Thanks

The Campendium app will show you dispersed camping all over the US. They list a bunch of sites in the San Juan’s.

We are going to Bronco Off Roadeo on Sept 18th and I am concernred about the tire chain law that starts on Sept 1st. We have a Class A 32 foot gas engine towing a Bronco. How do I know what roads are ok with this rig? Do you have to have chains as of Sept 1? We would like to camp and drive around this area on our way to Moab for the Bronco event.

Technically, the law says you need to meet the chain laws. But we rarely have snow in September on the main highways you would be taking. Usually our big snowfalls start in October and that’s when you could get in trouble (and stuck) without chains.

Just found your channel . Was looking up the hwy 550 it looked a bit intimidating on the map so I thought I would do some research first. Thank goodness I did. Very informative, we will be traveling after 4th of July Holiday.

It’s doable. We just choose not to do it. We just did the alternate route through Telluride last week. It has a few tricky spots too but you don’t feel as much like you’re about to go off the road.

@@RVHomeschool I could probably do it but... my rig ( 5th wheel) is close to 20k pounds and I'm a little over 60ft in length. It would surely be a white knuckle sucking seat cushions run , that I could do without lol. I'm not in a hurry. 145 appears to be a bit friendlier.

You videos of the passes and roads in Colorado have been very helpful in our trip planning. Is there a decent or preferred route between Ouray and Moab? My RV route planners take us on some questionable routes, including the Million Dollar Highway back to Silverton and Durango. Another sends us down 90 which I'm not familiar with at all. With a 38ft MH plus toad and being flatlanders I want to avoid anything too sketchy. Thinking it might be best to follow 50 back to I70 but hoping there may be another route.

From Ouray, I would take Hwy 550 north to Montrose then get on Hwy 50 to Grand Junction. Once you are in Grand Junction get on I-70 out to Moab. You won’t hit any major passes that route. Also, if you need an overnight (because Ouray to Moab might be a lot) stop in Fruita and see Colorado National Monument. It’s really cool but don’t bring the RV up there (just your toad).

We’ve been in this area many times but I think most of this was filmed in fall (September maybe).
