Hey guys, just wanted to say a massive thank you to all my subscribers for making this video possible! It probably doesn't seem like it, but this was an absolute beast to edit, and is probably far longer than it should be. I just really wanted to include as many of your questions as I could to show my appreciation for your support, and because I have a feeling it'll be a while until the next milestone! Really hope you guys make it to end of the vid to witness my cpu nearly setting alight! Thank you all, honestly, you're incredible!

You earlier said "I have no idea what's going on," and I'm going to say that my theory is the algorithm. I got recommended your channel when watching Aliensrock's polybridge videos, and when I saw the name Real Life Engineer, I had to check you out. Then, when you mentioned you were only at 100 subs, I had to sub out of righteous indignation that such quality content was being relegated to obscurity. Apparently, everyone else felt the same, and now you're growing like KZbin wants.

A rough estimate of the number of nodes in the long wall: 5000. The number of nodes vertically is 7. The number horizontally in a single section of ground is about 10. There are about 60-70 sections of ground. Multiply that out, and add on a very tough estimate of the nodes not above any of those ground sections, and you have ~5000 nodes.
@OriginalPiMan
@OriginalPiMan 4 жыл бұрын
An equilateral triangle just 141 nodes wide at the base should have a node count very near 10 000, so I think the pyramid is probably much close to the needed number than the wall was, although the estimate is much rougher. Edit: The pyramid was 12 sections wide, and therefore 120-130 nodes wide. That's around 8000 nodes, give or take.

The price of the stone wall came out to $983,256. I saw the wood members ranging in price from as low as $64 to as high as $70, that means the total members can be as high as 15,363 or as low as 14,046. To get more specific we need to do more math! The diagonal members are shorter and less expensive, by finding the how much of the wall's cost comes from each type of member, we can get a better estimate of how many members there are. Comparing the price of the stone wall at 24:00 and 24:45 we can determine that the added members cost $158,226 ($364,294-$206,068). If we subtract the added member cost from the price of the wall at 24:00 we can find out that a line of horizontal members costs $47,842 ($206,068-$158,226) and the diagonal members for one row cost $110,384 ($158,226-$47,842). Breaking down the cost of the wall's first row, 53.57% of the cost comes from the diagonal members ($110,384/$206,068=0.5357) and 46.43% of the cost comes from the 2 lines of horizontal members ({$47,842+$47,842}/$206,068=0.4643). If we assume these percentages apply to the finished wall, then all of the diagonal members cost $526,730 ($983,256*0.5357) and all of the horizontal members cost $456,526 ($983,256*0.4643). Assuming the average diagonal member is $65, that gives us 8,104 members ($526,730/$65). Assuming the average horizontal member is $69, that gives us 6,616 members ($456,526/$69), thus giving us a total of 14,720 members (8,104+6,616).

The Martian is arguably scifi, since 99% of it using real technology and science. People like Neil Degrasse Tyson have talked about it, and the book author's attention to science is astounding. The only bit that was a bit exaggerated was radiation shielding, I think it was specifically for the suit the main character wears while living on Mars. Radiation is one of the biggest concerns with someone living on Mars, the extreme cold and lack of oxygen already have solid solutions, and long term plans to cope with those challenges. With such a thin martian atmosphere, solar radiation will poison all organic life over time, so anything not inside a protected structure will need significantly better protection, just to move around the surface and be expected to survive in the longterm.

To explain how triangles are the strongest shape, we have to look at geometry. See, how “strong” a shape is is based on what you can do to a shape without changing the lengths of any of the sides, separating any two sides connected to the same point, “breaking” a side, bending any straight sides, or adding new sides. For any shape, the only way to change it without breaking these rules is by changing the angles. Now, for a triangle, whether it’s equilateral, isosceles, or scalene, whether it’s acute, right, or obtuse, triangles cannot have different angles if the corresponding sides are congruent. In fact, if each side of one triangle is congruent to a side of another triangle and vice versa, the two triangles are guaranteed to be congruent (same size and shape). This is why trigonometry works; given the side lengths of a triangle, it is always possible to precisely calculate the measurement of each angle of that triangle. And given the angles of a triangle and just one side of that triangle, it is possible to compute the lengths of the other two sides. This makes triangles “strong”; assuming that each side maintains the same length ratio to another side and none of them break, the angles of the triangle will also remain constant, thus maintaining its shape. No other shape has this property. Take any quadrilateral (4-sided shape). You can change the angles without changing any of the lengths. You can’t make a parallelogram (a quadrilateral where each side is parallel to another side) into a non-parallelogram or vice versa, and a square or other rectangle where two of its sides are parallel and to the ground and one of those sides are fixed can resist a force pushing straight down or straight up, but that’s it. Polygons with more sides are even more flexible. This means they are less rigid and cannot maintain their shape when unbalanced forces are applied from every direction at every point like a triangle can. What about shapes with curves? Well, to determine how strong such a shape is, curved sides are presumed to not be rigid; such sides can be bent or straightened, and you can even add a corner within its length (i.e. curvature is not fixed if the curvature is nonzero at any point). However, curved sides still have a fixed length just like straight sides. Basically, straight sides act like wood, metal, road, or reinforced road in Poly Bridge 2 with Unbreakable on, while curved sides act more like rope or cable (or suspension from Poly Bridge 1). Corners (whether between two straight sides, two curved sides, or one straight side and one curved side) are like weightless nodes that aren’t split joints. Under these conditions, it’s easy to see that having curved sides just increases flexibility and decreases strength. A circle or ellipse is just about as flexible as it gets, as the only constant is the perimeter/circumference. Now, is there a difference in strength between triangles? Yes. Obtuse triangles are generally the weakest triangles, while equilateral triangles are generally the strongest because of how forces get distributed, though this depends somewhat on the material used for each side but moreso the direction and relative strength of the forces on each corner of the triangle, particular how large the angle of the forces are compared to one of the sides (forces that act in the same direction as one of the sides connected to that node are often ideal if the material is sufficiently strong compared to the force on that point, while for weaker materials, a force acting in a direction equiangular to the two sides at that point may be better, allowing the load to be divided evenly in two different directions). Which size is strongest is heavily influenced by the strength, density, and flexibility of the material used for each side and the weight of each joint. Also, note that this is all about strength on an individual scale (not the strength of a bunch of shapes combined) and compares shapes under the assumption that each side has the same weight or density, the same tensile (pulling) strength, the same compressive (pushing) strength for straight sides (no compressive strength at all for curved sides or sides made of cable or rope), the same torsion (twisting) strength, the same flexibility (ability to bend), the same elasticity (tendency to return to its original shape if bent or otherwise deform), the same fragility (tendency to break vs. bend), identical reactions to temperature, the same coefficients of friction, the same durability, and the same cross-section in terms of shape and area, and that each joint has the same weight, size, strength, and flexibility (ability for each side connected to it to rotate about the joint). (Note that in Poly Bridge 1 and 2, joints/nodes are always completely unbreakable except for split nodes, which only split at specific times and will reconnect again when two split nodes are sufficiently close and don’t break under any force at all. Additionally, all non-split nodes have the same weight as each other, all split nodes with two connectors have the same weight as each other but more weight than non-split nodes, all split nodes with three connectors have the same weight as each other but more than non-split nodes and at least as much as two-way split nodes, and anything connected to a node can rotate completely freely about that node absent other forces.) It also assumes that all relevant forces and objects lie in the same 2D plane. Some of these assumptions are always completely valid in Poly Bridge 1 and/or 2 but not always or never the real world, some are only sometimes valid in Poly Bridge but sometimes or never in the real world, some are false but can still be used for reasonable estimations for design and/or construction purposes, etc. Figuring out the best shape for a given part of a real-world or in-game structure requires knowing the properties of the materials being used, the properties of the joints, (in real-world conditions) the weather and climate of the area, the maximum expected live-load (such as traffic) for each road/floor-part of the structure, the maximum expected wind load on each part of the structure, the difference in pressure from the air/water across parts of the structure, and the direction and magnitude of the forces on each part of the shape.

for 3:20 i think the best explanation is a mathematical one: arches are made of triangles to connect two ends with one flat base. The *simplest* possible arch is just a single triangle where the base of the triangle is the base of the arch, and every additional level from there makes the arch more... archy. an ideal arch looks like a perfect semicircle, made up of infinitely many tiny triangles

If you're making more realistic bridges in the future, it would be cool to see the Astoria-Megler Bridge done in Poly Bridge! Connecting Washington and Oregon over the Columbia river, it's the longest continuous truss bridge in north america!
