The fact that 2 bridges that I used as child and still use to this day made me really happy. The Transporter bridge and it’s gondola (car carriage) are over 100 years old and still operational today. Both the Transporter and the Newport bridge, which is also in Middlesbrough, are iconic crossing of the River Tees. They were both designed with the same purpose of allowing people to cross the river whilst also allowing larger container ships to travel up the Tees. It just goes to show the ingenuity of people to create unique bridges only a few miles apart.

Great examples of Teessides 2 most famous bridges. The detail of the smaller bridge at the end of both of them is great. The one on the transporter is where cars line up to go onto the gondola, its basically mesh and not fun to stand on. The one on Newport actually goes over a railway that runs alongside the Tees. Both were built in that fashion to allow ships with sails underneath and make it to Stockton, a few miles upstream. They were made redundant by the construction of the Tees barrage which blocks the river to all but small pleasure boats as tidal control for Stockton. Between the Tees barrage and Newport Bridge lies the 2 'Tees cuts' which were large earth works that cut out 2 meanders to make the trip from Stockton to the North Sea much faster. It was said that the journey took the same amount of time as the journey from the Tees mouth to the Thames mouth as the river was shallow and swampy before being modified. Evidence of these cuts is few and far between with only a few very old maps showing the original course. Prior to the transporter being built, people in Middlesbrough needing to work on the North Bank of the river would have to travel to Stockton to cross which is many miles longer in days where cars and public transport were minimal. Hope that essay interested someone.. Its an interesting area when you look into it including large chemical works, deep water port, a nuclear power plant and once upon a time lots of steel production.

I don't think I've seen it, but of course I've seen pics.
