WATCH PART 2 NOW: bit.ly/ESPORTS-P2
Today, there are more people in the world who play the online multiplayer battle game League of Legends than there are people who live in France. We wanted to see how humanity got to this point, so VICE host Matt Shea flew to South Korea, a country where competitive gaming-also known as eSports-can either make you rich and famous or land you in rehab.
In Part One, we touch down in Seoul, where the city's gaming cafés, stadiums, and arenas are buzzing with anticipation for the biggest eSports match ever held in Korea. At the League of Legends world semifinals, Matt falls in love with famous cosplay team the Spiral Cats, but he's crestfallen when they ditch him for an American eSports superstar.

Lol at all the mad nerds who can't realize the host is supposed to be clueless because he's acting as a vessel for those uninformed about gaming to get an understanding of what that world is all about. This documentary is meant for the mainstream folk, not gamers. Why the fuck would a gamer watch a documentary about gaming anyway? It's an intro for those who are interested in the subject or just curious but don't know much. Bombarding them with names and gaming jargon would just confuse them. But keep on copy pasting eachothers comments about "omg couldnt they find just one guy who knew something about gaming to be the host?" since apparently you got too much free time on your hands. Besides (and I'm not sure if it's so) Vice probably lets their reporters choose their subjects and make their own documentaries to then be published by Vice instead of giving set rules and subjects the reporters must touch. What I'm trying to say is if it wasn't for this host, you wouldn't have any gaming documentary at all.

Vice purposefully send people who dont know much about the world they're immersed in pretty often, or so it seems to be. A fan would have too many preconeptions to report accurately and the video's target audience would not be esport's fans so a lot of things a fan might report on would be irrelevant and quite boring to the watcher.

Actual definition of a SPORT as provided by the SportAccord (the organization which decides what sports are) SportAccord uses the following criteria, determining that a sport should: [1]have an element of competition be in no way harmful to any living creature not rely on equipment provided by a single supplier (excluding proprietary games such as arena football) not rely on any "luck" element specifically designed into the sport They also recognise that sport can be primarily physical (such as rugby or athletics), primarily mind (such as chess or go), predominantly motorised (such as Formula 1 or powerboating), primarily co-ordination (such as billiard sports), or primarily animal-supported (such as equestrian sport). So yeah, see the part where they say that they also recognise that sport can be primarily mind, primarily co-ordination? Yeah thats esports. Gg no re, get rekt scrub

You realize that sport is pretty much defined by competition. There doesn't have to be a physical component. If you feel like there has to be one then we could get rid of a LOT of competitive sports. Would you consider competitive archery a sport for example? I would. Even tough a pro gamer probably burns a lot more calories during a match than someone who does archery.

Ah, I remember back when I was competitive at gaming, and guess what, it was awful! It was literally taking something that was supposed to be made for fun, removing the enjoyment, calculating moves with mathematics instead of role-playing, and leaving feeling awful after losing by a point after winning tens of games in a row. All I have to say about this is that eSports fosters an utterly godawful environment for players, that often leaks into other games and corrupts large portions of the community, such as CS:GO or Street Fighter, reducing the game to a condensed anxiety attack instead of relaxing with your friends. Don't do it!

This whole documentary sucks, I mean the host doesn't know anything about eSports. He is more interested in the cosplay girls than his own documentary. Also he makes comments about "some guy" stealing his seat (how the fuck is this related to eSports?) That guy turns out to be a member of Cloud9 and he doesn't know?? Seriously? Why bother and not do your research beforehand? God. This is as bad as fox news or RTL... If you seriously want to do something, than do a documentary about something you are interested in. If you like cycling, talk about all the grandfondo, giro, tour de france, lance armstrong or chris froome. If you like guns than talk about ak47, america and whatnot. But don't make a documentary about something you don't give a fuck about.

So with the emergence of the gaming "professional" or gaming "celebrity", is it fair to say that society has officially deified sedentary behavior? It is a sad day in hell when a pasty faced obese guy, sitting in his basement, consuming copious amounts of "cheesy poofs" (yes, its a South Park reference), gets elevated to the same status as an individual who has spent decades honing his or her body through hours in the gym to be paragon of physical perfection. Please don't insult real athletes by calling these keyboard and controller jockeys "athletes".

Nobody in e-sports calls the competitors "athletes". I'm a huge SC2 fan and I've never, ever heard that by any players/casters/fans. Only in misinformed news articles. They may however call the scene a "sport", due to the fans/sponsors/coaches/teams/training regimens/tournaments/etc that e-sports shares with traditional organized sports. This debatable but fairly easy to argue for.

Lucy (Elfen Lied) What do you mean by "our society". USA? It's a global scene strongly rooted in asia and europe... dozens of countries and societies. And how is it contributing negatively to society on the level of racism/sexism? If people are going to play games they might as well put some thought and effort into it. And entirely unrelated, but racism and sexism in (non-religious extremist) societies all over the world is at an all time low. Literally the best it's been in human history. Not sure how that's "fucking low". Pull back and take an objective look.

Sport (or sports) is all forms of usually competitive physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing entertainment to participants, and in some cases, spectators. Chess and bridge are also considered sports. You need to think about eSports as innovation. You know how you see in futuristic movies where people play virtual reality death matches? This is the start of futuristic electronic sports innovation. We will be seeing eSports evolve and help evolve technology even further. Its ok if you dont accept this as sport. Youll be left behind just as people who dont accept new technology. Your children and grandchildren will know eSports and in some way or another will effect their lives.
