Before the PC age, video games were only really making waves in the media in the context of novelty.
But now, with attendance, viewership and prize pool continually on the rise, the mainstream media has come to embrace the industry.
Here's a look back at how that came to be.

Because those people whose matches are aired on medias aren't just ordinary people. They are athletes, they are professionals fighting each other in a sport matches, they have excellent skills, and people like how they play.

Garvežiukas Tomas Depends on how you look at it and how that knowledge is utilized. If it were a stretch, then why do we let trainee pilots go through “flight simulators” which is just an expensive word for a game? Hell, even the US military have utilized games before and even used Doom as a basis for training soldiers to recognize friend from foe. It’s not exactly “experience” per se but it helps greatly in training one’s mind to a certain purpose. Hell, it was even the basis for Ender’s Game.

while i 100% empathize with the point you're making, technically a lottery could have a prize pool of $1 million and just because you don't win the lottery doesn't mean the lottery is a hard, complicated game. we should focus on the specific aspects of certain games that make them worthwhile. maybe let them know that, in most video games, if they sit still they will lose guaranteed and then be mocked ruthlessly by their teammates for being so incompetent

More respectful than Cowherd but definitely still disrespectful!! Kimmel's implication was that we make guys like Pewdiepie rich because we watch his channel. Does Kimmel not derive his income from the millions of people who watch him? Then how is he different to Pewdiepie?!? Help me out here... so it's okay to watch someone make fun of others but it is not okay to watch someone display a set of skills we all wished we possessed? Or to support a team of 'esporters'? But we CAN watch Tiger Woods hit a little white ball around a field for 4 days because he is talented? We CAN watch darts, pool or snooker, despite them being borne of something to entertain you while you drank your beer. We can watch reality tv shows trying to find the (next) top model, best voice (multiple), best home cook, best professional cook, best survivor, best apprentice and so on. But we cannot watch the best PC gamers because we are obviously socially awkward losers with no ambition and the esporters have no talent whatsoever.... Totally idiotic!!!

Widana Widiatmaka Alot of these pundits and fogeys have also sold many generations of narrative that sports like football, basketball etc... All these are not waste of time because they develop your physical attributes and enable you to live longer. Where as competitive gaming for excessive amounts of time in front of a computer indoors has been painted by Media and medical experts as a long term killer and contributor to obesity, heart disease, blindness etc... Mix that with the fact that they think gaming is a mindless child's toy and you now get an entire generation of unnecessary hate.

I was a teenager way back then and wanted to do the same and get into Esports but thought I'd missed my chance. Truth is, neither of us have missed what will be the best days of the sport as far as it's popularity and appeal to revenue sources. Those numbers on television stats in regard to MLG blowing traditional sports clean out of the water by comparison in viewers. The advertisers and real fame and reward will come with the bulk of fandom the sport will receive once your average joe sees an MLG advertisement sponsored by the big brands. I'll agree its getting there fairly quick though.

Seeing how big eSports is now makes me proud to see as a gamer and to all those daring and brave trendsetters who paved the way for us in the midst of ridicule, jeers and snide remarks, you have made the gaming community a better place. It's great to see how big esports is now. I myself spent years attempting to be a pro at counterstrike. I had to give up because I'm not stupid to see that there are a lot of better players not only in my locality, so how much more in the whole world. But you also have to understand that these people who were skeptical and criticizing esports never had the chance to see it as a way to make money. Sure, you can hustle using it just like how i did, but other than that, if you're not one of the best, that's just it. I had the opportunity to attempt to be a pro because of the financial support of my hard working parents who also looked down on gaming. Esports being this big for the older generations to hear of it is basically a very new thing. It's a very rapid development actually, it's just very new. I also imagine the earlier non-combat sports invented after traditional Olympic sports were also considered a waste of time. So i think esports is just undergoing that.

Kimmel and many others wonder why we wanna watch others play games...well 1. They are professional... 2. We dont have that game and wanna see how it is... 3. We cant afford the game in general or PC cant handle it... 4. Gaming requires attention and focus which we dont always wanna spent... And Jimmy, why do people watch eSports?? Well, why do people watch any sport is general when you can also play that yourself...

Except not everybody is physically gifted to do what a pro athlete can do nor can some do it period. If we just had people going out to play touch tackle football you would see a bunch of outshape men breathing heavy running around the field. Games are far more different cause it really doesn't require you to look your best and be in top physical shape. If that were the case you would see far less skinny fat nerds and more alpha males playing e-sports.

@@dantasticmania8728 I'm sure you don't watch pro eSports tournaments. Pro gamers are much more skilled than anybody else. The games that they play take a lot of time and effort to master. Just like not everybody is skilled enough to play sports professionally, people aren't skilled enough to play eSports professionally. Plus, watching pros play helps you learn different tech and apply it to your own game Also there are many pro gamers out there that are probably more fit than you or Kimmel is. When that happens so will the rise in low t beta males and incel violence. Men are ment to be aggressive and by getting rid of good male aggression or curbing it is not a healthy recipe for society. There's even science that backs this up. Sitting on your ass to play a video game will lead to more lack of leaders and takers in society and more matriarch take over. On top of that depression and obesity will be at catastrophic levels. Men need an actual physical outlet for helping to release natural aggression. Sorry but these are facts and not some made up fake science like multiple genders or no gender roles.

What everyone seems to ignore, is the fact that esports is mostly, if not entirely, free to watch. Now I'm a huge CS:GO fan and I love to watch it more then any other competitive sport out there. BUT, paying to watch a sport, that knowingly makes billions on advertisements alone, just isn't going to make it with us anymore. It feels too much as a rip-off, if the game is boring to watch. Broadcast NFL, NHL, NBA and what ever for free via internet-stream and those numbers regarding viewership look way different all of a sudden.

Playing competitive games in tournaments is best compared to F1. Why? : 1. Requires lightning fast reaction time. 2. Split second decision making. 3. Deep understanding of the map. 4. Everyone can drive/play games but only the best ones can compete in F1/E-Sport tournaments. EDIT : As pointed in the reply, these are just comparison of some of the basic requirements in both of the sport but not a perfect one-to-one comparison

As today's teens become adults and the ones who laughed at professional gaming get old and die, professional gaming will become as, if not more, serious than professional sports. Who's to say that we aren't already living in one? There is a higher chance that our reality is simulated than the chance that our reality and the universe is the one and only that has ever existed. And I never said that the virtual age would be a happy/problem free one. Obviously there will be people seeking to control and enslave those who use said technology. Plus, did I not just say that sports and virtual reality may one day be combined? So you wouldn't just be sitting on your ass all day and even if people did, there would most likely be medicine and technology in the future to prevent the bodily degeneration from doing so.
