I’m from Lincoln, NE and looked him up today. Unfortunately Jay Adams passed away last October at the age of 54 - much too young. His service and stewardship are inspiring and at least he left a fantastic legacy to his family and of charitable giving and volunteerism in our community!

Why is there so much dissing in our culture against people with high GPAs? I am glad this guy called and had a near 4.0 GPA. It is statistically less likely for people to have a 4.0 but it does not mean that people with 4.0s are not successful! It means they put in hard work for their education and it is not an easy thing to do! For a society that values hard work, I find it highly hypocritical that there's this dissing. And for Ramsey who preaches making sacrifices to reach the desired outcome, it is very disheartening to see that he would put down people who made many sacrifices to achieve the grades they wanted! I don't have anything near a 4.0 but I absolutely admire people who do. I have met very few people with very high GPAs that do not put in the equivalent hard work to earn it. And these people ARE successful after they are done with school! I have only met one guy who is a first generation multi-millionaire and he was the valedictorian at his college.

You missed the whole point about GPAs. It is assumed that people with high GPAs will be wealthy because they will likely have a good job after college. Dave's point about not having a high GPA is that it (becoming a millionaire) can be done by anyone, even those without a high GPA.

Being in the market it does not really compound, the value of the shares goes up and dividends are quarterly.

I think Dave Ramsey should go into details sometime in his future videos on how to invest, and tips on what to invest in, but of course at our own risk. But I do think that this future video if he hasn't already done it would fix the disconnect among people who assume that it would be better to just save all their income up until retirement.

You're the type of person that Dave seems to be on a rant about. You're making excuses; obviously, not everyone graduated with college debt. Or, another way that you can be under 40 and be a millionaire is if you live at home with your parents and have virtually no expenses (then again, this seems to be like sort of receiving an inheritance anyways) and save a huge portion of your $35,000 salary. Again, it's just simple math.

Old? Ouch. Life is about practicing disciplines over decades. It's hard work but don't worry. If you're smart with your money and keep your body fit, getting "old" can still be a very high quality life.

This caller is not helpful because he leaves out too much detail on where his wealth came from. His answers to Dave's questions make it sound like he somehow built that much wealth by simply saving on a fireman's salary. There is no realistic mathematical path to those kinds of numbers without something else in play here. Rental property, flipping houses etc...? Some indication of that would have made things more clear. Dave also didn't ask him the borrowing to acquire wealth question. If he did initially to get the ball rolling that isn't the end of the world, but Dave is very anti debt for any purpose. So, maybe Dave left it out because it doesn't align with his message. If he didn't inherit anything and really only made less than 100k his whole career, he was doing something else at the same time with a lot of upside to it because unicorns don't exist.

Tim is right. The guy has a 4 year degree and is 48, so he has been working maybe 25 or 26 years. He hasn't earned 3 million, probably not even 2 million, in his life. He must have had great return on his investments or left something out of the picture.

He said he was 52... 20 x his average 75000 = 1,5 milj with compound interest that could easily make 3 million.

he was a captain and that's not his net worth that's marketing :) he said 20 yrs he started made under 100k a year before tax and charity 15-20%. So I'm going to call BS on that one. Having said that though you can end up with healthy nest egg but that is exaggerated by 1.5 mil at least..

+Bryan Hilbert I just don't see how math works out on that. Rental units if your lucky earn 8-12% on investment. If he is not including his mortgage loans as debt then maybe....but it's still not as presented. I am a supervisor in local government and I earn a little over his salary. I max 457 account and have rentals that are paid off, I don't tithe and am 45. With the time frame he is talking about it is impossible to have that NET worth on his own money without outside money or he including debt. You kinda have to see that don't you?

Jay said that he now gives 15-20%. I doubt he started giving that much 20 years ago but that he worked up to it because Dave Ramsey's method emphasizes building an emergency fund, paying debt, and give 10%. Also, $1.3 million is in retirement. Making on average $75k and contributing $15-20k/year in an account like Vanguard with compound interest, you most definitely will make that $1 million mark! He most likely lived a very modest lifestyle (also what DR teaches) to reach that goal. Looking at his sons they are also maybe at most 17. So, at 52 Jay would have started his family at 35/36, much later than most people. Not having kids young or at all also helps one build up wealth for retirement. I don't understand real estate so I don't know how he has a million in assets there. He might receive bonuses from his real estate venture which technically isn't treated the same as income that he put towards his savings and retirement. They glossed over a lot, but with no dependents for the first 15 years of your adult life making $70k there is really no excuse not to have a million at retirement unless you are truly bad with money.
