“There has never been electricity here, and we have made rigorous efforts to get (a) transformer, to be connected to national grid, but up till now, we are still on it. And that is affecting so many things here, particularly education. You know today, education has gone beyond writing and listening to teachers in class alone, so education has gone digital, and there’s no way we can give the students the best of what they need without electricity.”

“We understand there are so many other sources of energy we can explore, like generator, solar, we have a solar panel right now, we could be using generator, in fact, we have a generator, but the cost of fuel is very exorbitant. And the children, most of the children, we engage in charity, most of the children, their parents, they are not capable of paying for the school fees of the children, so we sponsor them ourself. So, because we want education in this community.”

“One of the biggest problems about this whole thing, about this electricity, is that we have connected wires around here, we even connected to grid. Still yet, we don’t have access to this electricity, and this affects the school as a whole because we cannot even put our gadgets to use because there’s no electricity around us.”

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Abdulhakeem Adedoja, head of Lorat Nursery and Primary School:
“One of the biggest worries is the fact that we don’t want to lose this school soon because people are going, moving away from this area in the name of there’s no light. I have some people who have relocated just because they say that there’s no light in this community. So, we are losing pupils in the process. Some people have to go with their parent and leave the school.”

“To be able to adequately have power to the capacity of what I need, I need a lot of money to be able to provide that, which is via probably solar. So, it’s the same thing. It's solar, I need money to get solar, but relying on the power that the government has given us is not enough because we don’t have enough hours in the day and the kind of business I run, our products are organic, meaning there’s no preservatives or additives, so it's solely reliant on it being preserved in a cold room, or in a cold environment, or in a freezer.”
