So true! A couple of years ago, I developed a crack in one of my teeth. Even with an HMO dental plan from my employer, it cost $400+ dollars out of pocket for a root canal and crown. And that was for the most basic crown; the higher end crowns I was presented with cost upward of $800+ out of pocket. If I had not had some savings at the time, I would have had to take out a loan or something. Crazy!

Dental care in America is disgusting. I went from having a beautiful mouth to having no teeth at all. Just because the dentists I went to thought my wisdom teeth were just calcium buildup. All because I was over 40 and had never had wisdom teeth. Now the idiots have pulled every tooth in my head except my wisdom teeth, except one. So, I have no teeth in my mouth except the three impacted wisdom teeth that never broke thru. Why is it that I can have a leg amputated in the Hospital, but they won't pull a single tooth?????????? I've had a broken molar for like 3 years and impacted wisdom teeth since my 20s. Bernie is correct. Personally, I don't think insurance should be necessary for preventative care, that should be paid with taxes, and as far a glasses, those should be free. My glasses are literally the difference between me being functional, and being disabled. I shouldn't have to pay for them. Contacts, sure, surgery, yes, but glasses? Glasses should be 100% FREE.

You would think that a country that boasts about how great it is would care enough about the people who inhabit it to provide good and TRULY AFFORDABLE dental and healthcare. In 1969 I gave birth to my oldest daughter. I had no insurance, but I had $500 in the bank, all of which I had to use to pay $300 for the hospital bill and $200 for the doctor bill. Today doctor and dentist bills are so far out of reach for most of us, we can't afford to go to doctors or dentists anymore. Another sad realization is that people judge others with no teeth. Imagine trying to get a job with cracked or missing teeth. People automatically think you're stupid and nobody will hire you. The extremely high cost of dental care today is unattainable for people like me who have no bank accounts and receive very little in the way of Social Security and/or pensions. I find it unbelievable that the cost of a tooth repair today is equal to what I paid for childbirth in 1969.
