I work in the sleep industry as a registered polysomnographic technologist. What’s happening is people were using a non FDA approved method of cleaning for their machines using ozone generation machines instead of the manufacture recommendation of warm water with a mild detergent. Because of this, and due to some patients not having AC and living in high humidity areas, it was causing the foam to break down. So far from the reported incidents it’s only been 0.03% of machines which again, user improperly cleaning them and/or the machine being stored in high humidity areas. It has nothing to do with the machine itself causing these issues

This is the machine I was given when I was diagnosed with very mild sleep apnea. (I barely qualified for the diagnosis but in order to consider other treatments for my poor sleep, my insurance required I used the CPAP for 30 consecutive nights.) I’m so glad that after the 30 nights I chose to stop using it, because it wasn’t improving my sleep any. My minimal exposure to possible toxic chemicals angers me, but it angers me more that there are people out there like the ones in this video who don’t have the same luxury I did, of being able to go without. Phillips should have to pay for new machines, especially in the case of the woman who got denied for a new one. It is unacceptable that a company so many have trusted for medical devices recalls a device without any type of immediate assistance. Patients are literally potentially putting their lives at risk while they continue to use their machines in the meantime. Disgusting. DO BETTER, PHILLIPS.

Mild sleep apnea does not seem worth the hassle of getting used to cpap. However when you are in the severe range it is definitely worth it. I would stop breathing 69 times per hour without it only 2.7 with it. It is not convenient to have to use it every time you need to sleep but to me it is definitely worth it. I usually don't even notice it any more even on 18 cm\h20. My sleep and my life is so much better with it than without it. Its almost immeasurable. I am not willing to go without so I will have to wait until they replace it. I am not too worried since I have never used ozone. Its not ideal but its better than not breathing or sleeping.

@@jeffboone7959 absolutely! One of the problems, is when one or two corporations are the only ones in charge of most of a given product such as these machines. Some medical supplies such as medical equipment (same with big pharma) need to have as many corporate players in the game as possible. Call your insurance company and ask if they would approve a replacement machine in the meantime if this machine has helped you. Some health insurance plans will approve a new machine that is not a Philips Machine though, probably a ResMed, some plans only require that another referral be put in for another machine due to product recall. Every health plan is different but it's worth a try if they have helped you.

He told me if I have never used a cleaning machine on my CPAP machine I don't need to worry. I also have a water chamber which will catch any thing that may break loose from inside the machine. I decided to check the water chamber for particles and I found none. Do not use those face mask and tubing CPAP cleaners. That's not consistent with the news piece which claimed that the degradation occurs naturally. @@victoriagauthier2008 - People with sleep apnea actually stop breathing when they are sleeping. It happens all night, and even if you fall asleep or take a nap during the day. You can tell how often from the results of a sleep study done at a hospital or clinic. When you finally wake up enough to breath, sometimes it's a large intake breath, but sometimes if you only slightly wake up the breaths are smaller and shallow, mirroring how you are trying to breathe in your dream.
