Is this the one secret move Ben Hogan and Moe Norman used for elite ball striking??
Join My Online Academy HERE milolinesgolf....
In this video, Milo explores a feel and rehearsal these two ball striking legends often used, even giving this instruction to others. Ben Hogan called this one move "the first move," and Moe Norman called this "the feeling of greatness." Some have seen this move as an exclusive movement to the right elbow in golf swing, but maybe there is more to it, more of a systematic approach? And maybe this signature move could help your golf swing? Let's explore...

It totally makes sense. I've been working really hard of keeping my right wrist bent in a downswing because I was getting rid of the angle too early. And one thing I noticed is my body has to turn and let the hands and arms follow in order to help keep the right wrist bent back

When you show the move without hitting the ball, the clubface is open at p6 every time, but then on the actual swing you make, the face is square. I dont really understand that. My main problem is getting to p6 with te clubface open, very much like when you demonstrate the move without hitting the ball.

Super description and execution of the mechanics. Big fan of moe’s for a long time. The problem I have with it is that I loose a ton of distance and my miss is a big wipe out to the right. Hogan perfected it to stop big hooks and I’ve perfected it to give me big slices. Still, it’s a beautiful looking move. I wonder if growing up playing baseball (which I didn’t) makes it easier.

Fascinating and, considering what phenomenal ball strikers Hogan and Norman were, this is something to take very seriously! I often note how steep top pros’ shoulders are relative to the ground, some are almost vertical at impact whereas most amateurs have shoulders barely off level.

If you want to see the visual personification of perfection, watch Ben Hogan's golf swing over and over!! Especially at impact. If you look at it in slow motion his right elbow is virtually NAILED to his side, almost beyond impact. Eat your heart out Jack and Tiger. Even they had nothing close to the control of a golf ball Hogan possessed. They just putted better!! If you want to see how to HIT a ball from tee to green, look no further than Golf's greatest ever shotmaker. William Ben Hogan.

I wonder if we can take advantage of each other! I had placed a bet at my club Nov.2023 that I would get to Single figures by Nov.2024I was 21 hcp at the time. Respectfully, I believe that, for Mr Hogan, this "secret move" stemmed from the initiation of his down swing by his lower body and the proper sequencing that resulted and not any conscious positioning of the forearms. He always emphasized proper sequencing in his instruction, whereas Mr Norman very much emphasized the arm positions.

You have to compress into the ground.
@TrevorScott465
@TrevorScott465 9 ай бұрын
This was great, one of Milo’s best. So in baseball you’re driving a waist high ball out into the field. In golf, think of an imaginary ball being not directly in front of you, but instead 90 degrees over on your trail side, still at waist height. Make it your goal to hit the imaginary ball straight down into the ground, not toward the target. Your target is the center of the earth. Think of hitting this imaginary ball with your shaft, not your clubhead. This is key. After that, the clubhead getting to the ball will take care of itself! Happy hunting!

Hogan hit it 50 yards by Moe. Clubhead speed not even close. Moe was an unusual guy. Hit the ball straight and all that but really regardless of what people perceive wasn’t a world class player at any point. Hogan produced serious clubhead speed and on demand could absolutely bomb it. Comparing Moe Norman in any way to Ben Hogan is almost criminal.

You are positive on this? Did Moe and Hogan play together? Do we have clubhead speeds for both? I'm not disagreeing, but just wondering. This move seems so contrary to what your former colleague Mike Malaska advocates in the golf swing. Am I wrong about this?
@TheWedgeWizard
@TheWedgeWizard 10 ай бұрын
Malaska’s “over the top from the inside move”? Yes, he talks about playing from a stuck from the inside position for years until figuring it out. To far laid off and inside isn’t good, like in the examples Moe and hogan were showing were very exaggerated from where they are in their actual swings. If you watch most tour players in slo motion they’re closer to what Malaska describes. Really it isn’t exaggerated inside, or over the top from the inside but rather right down the slot. The extreme feel of going either way can be necessary to achieve the ideal positions though, reals and feels of course.
@BOBPERIO2
@BOBPERIO2 10 ай бұрын
Thank you for your reply. It seems to me that without SIGNIFICANT body rotation through impact, the clubface would be wide open at impact. My 69 year old body cannot achieve that degree of rotation comfortably. Also, doesn’t that laying the club off move promote handle dragging and subsequent flipping of the clubhead through impact? Just seems like a recipe for a big golf shot out to the right. Just wondering.
@TheWedgeWizard
@TheWedgeWizard 10 ай бұрын
@@BOBPERIO2 you’d definitely need lots of rotation to square the face getting into similar laid off positions in the downswing. Reminds me of how sergio always set the club and dropped way inside. Personally I’ve always found the most success trying to keep everything very neutral & steady where the butt of my shaft in the downswing around p5 is pointing back at the ball, outside of it being to flat/inside & pointing inside of the ball being to steep. Keeping my spine angle relatively the same as address as impact and a steady head instead of trying to decrease my spine angle as much as possible by getting a super deep lead hip and of course causing my head to move along with it. Basically I’ve gone with similar positions as Butch harmon teaches, tiger in 2000, Adam Scott, as well as a lot of Jack Grouts/Nicklaus’s methods of simplicity. neutral, square, balanced, simple. I’ve always been able to shape the ball anyway with ease, a great ball striker & long sticking with those simple, neutral positions as well as allowing some room for my own tendencies. It seems a lot of golf instruction these days wants people to go to many extremes weather it’s dropping way to the inside, getting as much hip depth as possible in the down swing which in return forces your spine angle to decrease then you’ll need lots of side bend and of course your head must dip down to follow the way you’ll see many young players do who have been taught that. Some people preach over the top, some preach dropping way inside, yadayada, but it feels like we’ve lost sight of neutral, balanced, square positions in the swing. I’m not saying this channel or anyone specifically but golf instruction as a whole has become who can go against the grain and stand out rather than teaching the methods that have been proven to work and win championships. Like I said before though, sometimes extreme feels are required to get neutral reals. As someone who’s been complete obsessed with this game for over 30 years, went to school for golf, taught golf for over 20 years, been playing competitively since I was a junior, have multiple course records, loves reading/watching/learning everything I can about swing dynamics, biomechanics, laws of ball flight, teaching methods, course management/design, sports phycology, etc etc. the more I’ve learned, the more I’ve realized the simplest methods are the most effective and simply having a full understanding of “the new laws of ball flight” and how they relate to swing dynamics/biomechanics is bar none the most helpful lessons any golfer can learn. Basically understanding the basic physics of the game makes it infinitely easier to control that little white ball yet I see very few instructors actually teaching them but rather just teaching how to get in positions without the student understanding the why.

@@BOBPERIO2 I bet it can rotate more than you think. Make sure your backswing involves turning into your trail hip socket to obtain the hip turn (internal rotation of trail leg) and then rotate your hip back to square by externally rotating your trail leg back to the square position, then continue to open up - Milo shows this move in a video from a long while ago and it really makes opening up and maintaining hip depth easier. Milo also has a lowering at the start of the transition, which helps the move. Padraig Harrington also has some good videos of how the pelvis/hips work.

@robrodgersse
@robrodgersse 3 ай бұрын
The interesting thing about the right elbow at impact is that it only gives the illusion of having been independently driven forward in the downswing. This is because the effect of rib cage / hip rotation is being missed. If you isolate the right elbow, 3D imaging shows at impact it's actually behind it's address position relative to the rib cage. To prove this to yourself, create a good impact position, then without changing the position of the club, wrists and arms, return to address posture (bring your hips and rib cage from the open position of impact back to the square position of address). If you do this correctly, you'll see the club is about 18" behind the ball and right elbow is a few inches behind its position at address. The only reason the right elbow appears forward is the rotation of the hips and rib cage. It's ironic, but the more a player tries to drive the right elbow forward independently in the downswing and through impact, the more they're going to shut down hip/rib cage rotation through the ball. The right elbow should lag behind and be pulled (towed, as Milo says) around by the rib cage, not be driven across it.

@@MiloLinesGolf I love the vague explainations... lol. "wrist condition and face need to match up".. lol thanks bud... that clears it up for him lol. Hey @TheSalonGuy.... the move this guy is talking about is a feeling!! Moe Norman said that it was a feeling. He also said he wanted to feel like he was swinging the club down the line and not to the left. We all know that is not what actually happens in real time. The club goes to the left regardless. Feel vs. Real. By now, we all know the difference between "FEEL and REAL". Some people say the complete opposite... like you should feel like you're releasing the club from the top. Again, this is a "FEELING" not reality. I get it. But you can't look at this as anything you should consciously be doing in the swing. If your Grip is fundamentally correct, the hinge will facilitate good release of the club head. The wrists do NOT really hang back that long. Look up mike malaska's video on tipping the club. It is much more useful to understand how the hinge works in the swing and how to not lose the club behind you, and maintaining leverage on the club, while allowing the hands and arms to FALL into the "slot". You should never feel like you're pulling it from the top. The ONLY form of pulling you should try to feel is your body weight... pulling the shoulders, arms, hands and club into contact. If you maintain the proper hinge, the rest should take care of it's self. There's a fine line between firmness and tension. The tension in your arms needs to be removed before you turn away from the ball. If you tried to hold off the release like this video is telling you, you will launch everything to the right.... just like in the intro of the video, you see this guy blast one way out to the right. If you can FEEL like you keep the trail elbow in front of the trail hip, make a full turn while utilizing a proper hinge, with the correct tempo and pressures from the ground, send the proper transition of weight from the ball of the trail foot, back (and to the left) into the Heel of the front foot. This will facilitate a clearing of the left hip, and in doing so, if the connection is maintained in the hinge, the hands, arms, and the head of the club, come down to the back of the ball with very little rotation. the rotation that causes you to face the target at the end of the swing is a result of the club taking you through to the finish. you should never try to hold off the release.

A *supinated lead wrist* into impact. Mr Hogan emphasized this as much, if not more than any other point throughout his books. Pair this with his "three right hands" and it's nearly impossible not to flush the ball all day long. And the real magic is when you combine it all with the tensionless transition Milo discussed. Oh and the secret sauce is a very simple reach away and up as your takeaway. I know the one plane low and slow muscular approach is en vogue since Tiger, but in my experience the two plane approach is so much more body friendly and productive. And it just looks so better too.

Hi Milo there may be a better way. Since our trail trigger index finger in connection to both hands and wrists are what actually turns our trail elbow inwards; I take the following measures At setting up to my ball bending forward I simply preset my trail elbow rolling it inward towards my stomach just enough as to not disturb my grip as well as my club head laying perpendicular to my ball. I then simply swing my club back with my arms and shoulders which moves my hips and legs automatically. At the transitional part of my swing I specifically use the trail index trigger finger of my right hand to throw my club head down to and through the ball exiting left to a classic finish of my swing. The trail overhand throwing specifically using my trail trigger finger brings my trail elbow back into its slot along my stomach line and the centripetal force of my club head does the rest. Cheers 🥂👍😊

I've able to somewhat reproduce that feel at slower pace and what makes it work is that I "feel" like I'm turn steering counter-clockwise going back which then causes the tension in the arms/wrists/shoulders to "spring" back the other way at the top and shallows out automagically... NOt sure if that's the right way of visualizing it but I'm getting closer.. Just need to resist temptation to swing at my usual 110% or I revert back. Fighting my brain more than anything. ;)

Yeah, this is the FIRST move. But, just before impact, there is massive rotation very quickly to square the club. All great players do it. Hack Motion proves this. In reality, this is just hitting from the inside and not over the top.

Milo this is a great video, however, whenever I try to do this and exaggerate my right elbow in and below my left arm, I always push it out to the right or slice it cuz I do not have enough time to turn the club over and or release it. How do I fix that please?

When I do this move the face really isn't open and I can unwind pretty freely without needing to square it. Your matchups, perhaps grip or such are not allowing you to freely move through without needing to put on the brakes and square. I'd have to see your swing to give you the best possible feedback. This is the danger of having great players describe their swing only by feel. They are describing how THEIR swing FEELS to THEM. While this might be interesting, it's probably not that useful, unless that particular feel resonates with the swing of the player taking in the info. Real vs feel is still true for great players. It's akin to taking someone else's prescription drug. What saves them, could possibly kill you.

Love all these 'new' instructors who have unknowingly been teaching moe norman moves are now discovering his genius. The 'shallowing of the clubhead' is pure Moe Norman. He described the feeling as putting the clubhead in his pocket. Apparently, Hogan and Norman got this from Ted Williams. As shown in this video great baseball hitters understand this. Let the clubhead drop the opposite direction as your turn and like magic it will square up.

Milo great video and just subscribed to your website. Understand the basic point about the right arm relative to the left arm in the downswing but looking at the Ben Hogan swing you posted, it seems to me that something more is at work there. About midway into the downswing, Hogan's golf shaft seems to suddenly steepen suggesting, to me, that he is dong something with his arms (hands) to make the club tumble out (relatively) compared to your or Norman's swing. Can you comment?
