What I found, that relates well to this, is that focusing on connection between the body and arms, greatly improves the short game. This makes sense because feeling connection gives you radius control. It works with chipping, pitching, and bunker shots.

A friend -a retired PGA Pro-once advised me “ spend 50% of your practice time on your short game and then reward yourself by going to the range” My (only) 3 times I broke 80 gross in medals, were where I managed to keep the ball in play and my chipping and putting were really good. This video was a really brilliant eye opener for me ! Thanks gentlemen.

I highly recommend Blake I learn more about short game in 2 hours than I previously knew. PS : He hit several shots and I can see why Milo says his short game is 2nd to none

Fantastic! I've been watching chipping videos out the ying-yang. And practicing hours upon hours. I just wasn't getting it. I still don't know if I've got it, but today, I thought to myself "radius" and put it to practice. I couldn't believe the consistency I had. So I've been watching any video I can get hold of where golfers talk about radius when chipping. This is the best one. And the idea of practicing chipping and putting before hitting balls, oh yeah, I need to pay attention to that. Great lesson. Now to apply it and make it part of my game. Thank you guys so much.

i think the worse lesson in golf is being told to hinge the wrists up. that has to be responsible for most skulled pitch shots and sliced drives. in his video on the short game severiano ballesteros tells us to create a right angle between the club and the left arm in the backswing. he actually did this with every club in the bag. but, seve didn't loose width when he did this. and he maintained width by controlling the club with the heel pad of his left hand. he had a downwards cock of the hands. the downwards cock came when the club was parallel to the target line and the heel pad of his left hand was pressing directly down on the club..

Great video! I also have dragged the handle for years, always been a good iron player but struggled with short game. Through hours and hours of chipping I’ve found if it keep my chest up and chin from moving down (shortening the radius) I can hit quality short game shots while still not casting or throwing the club on the short game shots. Keep it simple and open the face or change wedges for more loft. Thanks Milo!

This is a fantastic video! I came to the same conclusion about 6 or 8 months ago. I was thinking of keeping the ark constant which is basically the same thing as the radius. Yeah it's starting to make sense to me anytime you hit it then you're getting the club too close to you anytime you hit it fat you're getting the club too far away from you and it's pretty simple to fix for the most part. For a while even experimented with going back with the handle a little closer to me to let it go into the sand to get under I've since adjusted that to more of my setup but still it's an interesting exercise
@davidmeeks74492 жыл бұрын
This has changed my short game. Much better results with less effort. This is far easier for me than “using the bounce.” I just could not get used to it. This method is actually way easier. If you keep the radius maintained, keep turning and keep your grip relaxed and flexible, crisp consistent contact becomes very easy to achieve. You really just let it happen. This makes a few short game lessons I took seem like a waste of time. I tried Blake’s method and had it down in no time. What I also like is this approach is also far more accurate.

i have never understood why we have been told to use the bounce. the bounce can help us if we get a bit behind the ball; but a clean contact has to be the best option. i would use the jordan spieth bobbed down shot from there. gary player pioneered this method. pressed down with the palm of his right hand, as he took the club back, and bumb. i remember it being described as a method all of his own. it isn't now. blake does something that is very important here, also, when he does the one handed swing, he establishes control of the club with the heel pad of his right hand, and that is key.

Many ways in short game. The lie and grass type matters a lot.

Yes, the concept using bounce is all good and I understand. But when I hear what some instructors say about how to use the bounce, their response is: "just hit 2 inches behind the ball it it like bunker shot". So, obviously this cannot be the solution how to use the bounce for many amateur players.

@caribber12 жыл бұрын
When you say chipping radius, are you speaking of matching the backswing with the forward swing?
@MiloLinesGolf2 жыл бұрын
No we are speaking of the distance from sternum to club head
@TheGoodGadfly2 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with the emphasis on maintaining swing radius but not allowing (or being comfortable with) the club head passing the hands limits your versatility around the greens. I think the radius approach is fundamentally sound but controlled club head throwaway is very useful with added bounce for insurance. I'm curious to know how this squares with the video that makes a distinction between shaft lean/rotation for compressive shots and minimal shaft lean/less rotation less compressive shots? A very useful distinction, I thought. I'm tempted to say that if you are unaware of the distinction then you are likely to release the club the same way, ill-advisedly, with compressed and less compressed shots.
@MiloLinesGolf2 жыл бұрын
Lots of ways to manage compression I use a combination of management of shaft lean and club path. In this segment with Blake we are speaking of short chips and pitches where little to no hinge is needed. In this situation I control compression mainly with how open or square the face is coupled with my swing direction.

At 7:51 where he's talking about his hands going forward is simply just a matter of not understanding that release pattern. It's genuinely very simple. And I'm not saying that to be condescending or weird. He's just holding off the release. He's 100% correct that was long as you're controlling the radius the rest of the stuff is pretty irrelevant cuz you're going to catch the ball clean 99.7% of the time and even if you're off you're barely going to be off. That solves a huge chunk of the short game. Yet without an actual finesse stroke distance control becomes much more challenging. Because you're hitting the ball there's more of a pop there's more compression which makes distance control next to impossible. You will be streaky at best. If you ever watch the best short game players they hit the ball very softly. It's almost like a knuckleball there's almost no compression it's more of just a soft thud. Whereas if one time you seriously compress the ball and you get spin or another time you can press it even more and you don't get spin all those things we're going to make distance control very challenging.

@@jacobr4558 well you wouldn’t want to have a short game competition with this man I assure you it would be very lopsided he’s that good.
@jacobr45585 ай бұрын
@@MiloLinesGolfI would love to have a short game competition with him. Honestly if he found something that works that well for him and especially Under Pressure than that's awesome! I do think radius control is a key component to contact. So for the average person that's going to eliminate the majority of their problems because they make huge mistakes. Where I do feel like this technique is inferior is in popping the ball or getting too much hit or too much spin. It will lead to a lot less consistency. In the full swing you need compression you need maximum speed and compression and power and leverage and pivots. In the short game you need finesse and you need control and you need to be able to hit the same distance 100 out of 100 times. If you were bringing in a hit play pop or extra spin or hand action you are just compounding variables into your short game. Just as the full swing needs compression the short game 100% does not need compression. Steve Stricker is not compressing his pitches for trapping his chips or any of that kind of stuff. It its a dead/soft thud. Not a high pitched pop/hit. So all the principles for speed/power apply-ground force, deep hips, shallowing etc. ? Lets say in my full swing I like to throw the club out and i swing 101 mph and hit the ball pretty well and have a 5 handicap. Ok it works but what of you hold me that I could swing 110-113 if I learned a different way to leverage the club? Then my response is -it just doesnt feel natural to me? I stay it depends on the person and their goals but there are efficient and less efficient motions. Why would finesse principles not apply? Soft hands, throw out, soft turn, radius control, release points...all opposite of power principles. I find it interesting that we have all this data on power swings with launch monitors, force plates, hack motion etc but very little on finesse motions? P1-P10 where the club is in space, depth of hit/compression or lack thereof, release point, path, face, weight move many, planes of motion etc. I have never seen a video that covers that just dynamic loft stuff. Dan Grieve some quality finesse information. He speaks of the full swing and short game being COMPLETE opposites.

@MiloLinesGolf4 жыл бұрын
If you actually held the hinge you would swing over the ball. The key to hinge and hold is letting the club line back up with the lead arm but not letting it pass.
@thomasfraser90724 жыл бұрын
No one can teach radius control. They only can only tell us to look for the straight 4 inch blur divot immediately after the ball is struck. Never before the ball is struck with the exception of being in the sand trap. We all swing a little differently in any situation while we are playing on a golf course; but as long as we see the 4 inch impact blur past the ball in our regular golf swings allowing the momentum of the club to finish our swing, we can never go wrong. Cheers
@MiloLinesGolf4 жыл бұрын
Really I teach it every day quite successfully.
@thomasfraser90724 жыл бұрын
@@MiloLinesGolf do you discuss the ideal impact zone of a divot 4 inches past the ball as well? The 2 goes hand to hand so to speak. If so you tie the two together nicely. Because in truth as Bobby Jones once said we only see the golf swing at the span between our 2 ears.
@MiloLinesGolf4 жыл бұрын
@@thomasfraser9072 When pitching I don’t want a divot at all and I generally want the bottom of the arc right under the ball. I have never taught a player how to stop hitting it fat or how to take a divot in front of the ball those are results of good athletic movement.
@thomasfraser90724 жыл бұрын
@@MiloLinesGolf I agree with the pitch. But they still need to see a 4 inch blur past the ball. Don’t they? This keep them in the golf posture with the momentum and weight of the golf club lifting them up post impact to the ball The students need to feel and see this blur developing their own good eye and hand coordination. However I believe telling students what to look for in their swing as to what professional players see, is essential in teaching golf. I do not claim to be a professional teacher of golf. Just a 45 years student of the game. Cheers

I don't know how good your short games are but I would challenge what you're talking about with your natural athleticism. If you've ever seen any of Dan Grieves videos and most people who are really good exceptionally good at one aspect short game or Power full swing ball striking the short game in the full swing are basically polar opposites. I don't see any reason to use your power Mechanics for a short shot you don't need the power. It would be like if somebody like Chevy by esteros or somebody that had a ridiculously good short game said well the full swing doesn't feel like my normal move so I don't want to do the power moves. You could play that way but he never actually have the power. I think you have the same problem if you don't apply the actual correct mechanics of the short game. Sure you can chip and you can get up and down and you can do things but if you're not actually incorporating the Finesse swing you're missing a lot of your potential. Having said that I do believe people have to find what works for them and depending how much time and effort they want to put into it but I'm just saying if you're going for optimal learning how to swing more of a finesse Style would ultimately get your averages better.
