God bless Maesto Milton Cardona!!! The world greatly misses him. He was a master percussionist, master vocalist, and master educator. He could sing Do-Wop and R&B harmonies with the best of them in addition to Latin Coro. Of course, gracing a recording with his Santeria rhythms, Batas, and Chants made the session a beautiful sacred hang. His contributions to the music world are immeasurable. Big GRACIAS for the upload. Que En Paz Descanse.

He was all of the above, and as I keep saying, he was also one of the most humble and beautiful people I interviewed. I was lucky to have known about him through my friend and mentor Guido Herrera, of Alma del Barrio. I will post more of his interview in time. Stay tuned.

My one of my first orisha songs CD Milton Cardona. I learned these songs after returning from one the most intense schools in Cuba 1994 Escuela Nacional de Arte. followed by Orisha Rumba Anthology binder with Cassette and Lyrics note book presented to me by Steve Bloom (Havana Select WDC area) and Cassettes (Gary Rubenstein). I learned these things when there was no Internet or Social Media and have no regrets. My studies in Modern dance based on Dunham Technique and African origin instructor the late Dr. Sherrill Berryman Miller-Johnson (Howard University) which I know and do believe was a God send that saved my life open my mind heart and spiritual growth and development, gave me a great heads up when I studied dance in Cuba including Haitian dance Yanvalou (Dambala).. After which I have studied with Baba Richard Gonzales (Djoniba Drum and Dance (NYC), Oscar Rossoux from Cuba at Latin folk Institute, Mt. Ranier, MD, Cedric Teamer (Rueda de Casino Baltimore, etc. and had a wonderful teaching career and taught several master classes and choreography in Baltimore and abroad. i was made priest of Osun (IFA) 2012. I am so blessed to know these things of my culture, African and African American history. I have had the blessing to study African and African American history via dance that helped me to excel student upon my return to Morgan State University as a single parent Major/Sociology and anthropology graduated with honors Alpha Kappa Delta. My journey also via Lucumi. i am so grateful and thank you Olodumare always. Ase

Wow, you have an interesting and distinguished background for sure, and I love the fact that your fascination seems to have originated in the dance and the religions. I have always thought of this music as being a "Call from the Gods!" Although I don't have an African or African American background, it was actually the same for me, especially after I read Ned Sublette's "Cuba and its Music!" This gripping anthology going all the way to the beginning (as early as the Pygmy tribes in Africa) quickly became my bible! Stay tuned, I will be posting more of my own Cuban experiences, including dances that took place at Callejon de Hamel, images from the Festival de Fuego in Santiago, Bomba and Plena in Puerto Rico and more.. I think you will enjoy them.

Hi. I am Bruni, Milton’s wife. As I was just reading your comment, I couldn’t help but notice how right you are. Milton left behind boxes of diaries from 1975, I think till 2008. I threw it out to some people in the hopes that someone would want to right a book, but no one seems to be interested. There is so much info and history in those diaries. I am also very disappointed that he was never given due recognition for his contributions to music with batas. He was told it couldn’t be done, and he proved that it could be done. None of these bata drummers out there today, really have Milton to thank. If not for him doing what he did, they wouldn’t be doing it. His first time putting batas to salsa was on the tune Vo So. The opening is the first time bata was used in salsa. From there, he proceeded to include them in all other genres, again proving it could be done. He was never recognized for that. Sad..

When i was a kid and lived in NY in the bronx I too was told los Batas couldn't be played with any other music. Because my grandma's was a santera and that was the only place you could hear or see tambores bata. Not after i heard milton playing bata..i was blown away with that sound..wow ! I really didnt know he was the one to ontroduce the bata to latin music...thank you for that GREAT information..Its history fro one of our best conguero in latin music and we don't hear a thing about this gentleman...wow !
