Drill taps are the BOMB! Real time savers. I use the hell out of them. I've been using the ones from DeWalt and Greenlee for a couple years now. They've been great. The Milwaukees are about 6 bucks a pack cheaper than the dewalts. Hope they hold up. Whats with the hole in the end of the shank?

In my experience with normal taps, it's to allow you to center them in a mill for hand tapping. I could be wrong about these though

How thick is that steel

That is 1/4” C-channel steel. This is the max thickness for these self-drilling taps.,
