MiMa's cover of Kraftwerk - The Model

Here's my cover of this famous piece from the german electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk. As usual I did the piece from scratch and then muted the parts I wanted to play in the video.

@@joebrown9586 Custom designed sounds. The bass is a simple sawtooth with decaying filter, the "flutey" lead 2 pulse oscillators put in sync, with a bit of LFO to modulate their pitch. The sound is then being processed with an external flanger pedal.

@@davegill7614 Just exercise it. It's not really tricky, start by figuring it out by firstly playing slowly the parts separately, then, still slowly, get them together. Once you'll be able to play the parts together at a slow speed, increase it step by step until reaching the song's original tempo. That's how I did it.

@@mima85 it's strange mima...I never struggle on piano with things like bach or Chopin the hard stuff...yet when it comes to slower less tricky tunes I struggle..its odd

@@davegill7614 Well, me I struggle with almost everything, if this could help :-) On my videos it seems that I'm playing effortlessly, but this is the results of dozens of dozens of takes (and swears) and a lot of exercising before making each video.

Hi that's brilliant! I've just learned this & I want to create the tone that you have on your lower keyboard, I have Roland GW7 & Yamaha tyos workstations, obviously not as good as yours! But I'm hoping to 'get somewhere near' with my equipment. Can you tell me what this lead tone is & how you got this tone? - is it a single tone or layered? and what analog modification did you do to it - attack/release/resonance etc. Failing that could I download this tone file from anywhere? I've been messing around with various Sawtooth's & other synth leads etc but can't seem to get it! Thanks in advance Jamie

Thank you :-) The lower keyboard's lead tone is a quite simple analog sound (actually that keyboard is an analog synthesizer, a Roland Jupiter 6). There's a bit of attack and a quite slow decay on the filter. No resonance. How I obtained that sound is quite peculiar, because I used a high pass filter instead of the more standard low pass one, coupled with PWM modulation on the oscillator, to give the sound that nasal quality. Then I equalized it on the mixer to remove some high bands. I don't know if with your workstations you can obtain the very same sound. Anyway, they have thousand and thousand of sounds onboard, just search in the "synth leads" category and surely you'll find something that, even if not sounding exactely like my sound, it's anyway suitable to play this song.

Thanks for your appreciation :-) I don't have the chords, actually I'm not even able to properly read music sheets. I got the song by ear. I don't know what style you should choose on your arranger keyboard, technically this is electronic music but usually such styles on arranger keyboards are more dance/pop oriented instead of the more early and experimental stuff like this.

Hey Laurent, thanks for chiming in and for your compliments :-). Yes of course these Roland synths are great stuff. I'd truly like to be capable to make my own music. The problem is, that I miss that "something" which could allow me to do it. I tried, but when sitting at the keyboards I can't focus the ideas, this makes me nervous, I loose the concentration and I end up giving out. The funny thing is that when I'm sleeping, sometimes I compose music. I really create it from scratch, caring with all the arrangements, harmonies, sounds, etc, and I even truly hear that music in my ears, like if having a pair of headphones playing it. And when this happens, I'm always aware of what is going on, in that precise moment I know that I'm composing music to the point that I tell myself "wow, this stuff that I'm dreaming of is sounding really cool, I must do anything I can do to remember it when I'll wake up". But by the time I wake up, the music I was dreaming of ends all completely forgot. Always. This may sound stupid but trust me, it's very frustrating. I know that my mind is capable to create music, but I'm not able to make it coming out.

All the parts you see me playing are played live and for real. No fakes or cheats here. Of course, as I'm not an octopus with 8 hands, I can't play more than 2 parts at the same time, so the rest is done by the computer playing the background track. If in a video I'm not playing live I inform my viewers in the description, actually there's one on my channel ("The Unknown Song") that it's not a real-time show like my other videos, and in the description I tell it clearly.

No MIDI here. All parts are done by hand and recorded as audio track in Reaper, except the drum track, which of course is sequenced. This is my usual workflow: I start by sequencing and rendering as a WAV file the drum track using an external program (usually ModPlug Tracker), I import it in a new Reaper project, then I play by hand and record all the other parts (bass, melodies, chords, arpeggios, etc...) one by one. Rarely I sequence something other than the drum track. After having re-done the entire piece, I mute the parts I want to play in the video, and I film myself playing while the computer plays the base. The latter being done and redone until I don't reach a satisfactory take, for some videos I had to do literally dozens of takes before having something decent to show here on the tube...
