Can we just applaud the soundtrack? The song they did whenever the parade appeared is so good. It perfectly captures the chaos and just the ignorance the people who follow the parade have. It's the sound of celebration but also a path of no meaning.

Something I noted was that the politician was a daruma doll, where you set a goal and draw in one of the eyes, and when said goal is completed, you draw in the other eye. The fact that the politician is missing an eye could mean that politicians often set exorbitant promises, but rarely carry them out successfully.

Whenever I come back to take a look at this scene, I'm always creeped out. The pointless vanity, the empty happiness animated in this scene. The music is by Susumu Hirasawa btw, and you can find the full version of the track pretty easily - it's quite good as a standalone (and has vocals).
An English transcription of what the parade participants say: 0:38 -- Businessmen which turn into instruments: "The dream I had yesterday and today. The happy and mundane world will vent their anger." 0:43 -- Mothers which turn into golden statues with their children: "The dreams will grow and grow. Let's grow the tree that blooms money." 0:48 -- Schoolgirls with cellphone faces: "It's most valuable while it's still a bud." 0:50 -- Men with the camera heads: "That's right, so we shall preserve the memory forever." 0:55 -- Homeless people: "If there is no flower, there will be no fruit." 0:58 -- TV/house bodies with faces: "If there's nothing, then I won't do anything." 1:02 -- Daruma doll: "If you're unhappy, please put a vote in this eyeball." 1:08 -- Business-men/politicians: The one top, struggling to keep his place, says "Who would give up this throne?" One in a pinkish suit declares "I am the emperor, chosen by the lord himself." Two others respond "I didn't choose you!" 1:17 -- Religious statues, American statue of liberty: "God and Buddha will change religions" 1:21 -- Entire parade starts repeating the lines the businessmen said at the beginning: "The happy and mundane world will vent their anger." It repeats for the rest of the scene.

Non-Japanese here, but here's what I can pick out. Here is my take on this Insane Parade. 0:00 Japan's high suicide rate. 0:23 mixing religious totems with toys and souvenirs. 0:25 Japan confusing it's national identity. 0:30 Japan's faux religious Identity. 0:42 Japan's issue as parent's are viewing children increasingly as possible money makers. 0:50 Japan's issue with Voyeurs and girls being told to "not make issues." 0:55 Japan's huge issue with the homeless population 0:59 Japan's issue with Non-functional members of society or Hikkikomori. 1:02 Japan (But honestly everywhere) issue with so many government officials making half-baked promises and many times never reaching promised goals after so many years in office. 1:08 Once again issue with so many figure heads for groups that nearly tear each other apart trying to reach the top can even be heard declaring themselves chosen by god, or being god at the same time... (all of them yelling "I didn't chose/vote you!) 1:19 Japan taking other cultures and seriously changing them. Also want to point out that many People either ignored the insanity and went on with their lives, watched in enjoyment, or became part the insanity/issue themselves.

I don't care if this comment never gets noticed by a single person. i just need to put my sheer appreciation for this masterpiece out there: What blows my mind is this absurd blend of dreams and reality actually works so well. this sequence is so confusing if you watch it without context. but after a while you pick up on the many nihilistic messages that are in the dialogue. the men in the start jumping off buildings with a smile, knowing that's probably better than living their lives in this world. the people with phones for faces shows how their identity has changed due to the constant exposure to technology. and so much more. to me, the parade represents people accepting that they have reached the point of no return and embracing that fact. almost even celebrating it. the way all of the people transform into objects, yet continue to dance and sing, to me represents that they feel like they can't be human in this capitalistic world. and aren't treated as such. they are mere objects, simply used and thrown out when no longer needed. The only ones inside the parade that stay human are the greedy politicians. who are the only ones treated and respected like actual people. yet even they have these ''dreamlike'' exxageratted expressions making them look like cartoony supervillains to represent their greed and power hungriness. this twisted parade is all of them nihilistically but optimistically accepting that that's what they are meant to be. changing their mindset as well as their physical form. their lives are nothing more than an endless cycle of celebrating these tiny moments of hedonism. because it's all they have in this world. it could have been easy for the creator to use this concept of ''dreams mixing with reality'' and simply have absurd stuff happening on screen with no subtext just to give that wow factor. but it somehow manages to give both the wow factor while giving MULTIPLE messages about the world we live in through this never before seen format, in this never before seen way. and with that knowledge, this absurd scene becomes incredibly...human. it is just... unbelievable how deep this really is.
At the beginning the people comitting suicide with a big smile on their face+the music always gives me goosebumps

This is seriously deep. At first I was all like "look at the crazy visuals", but then a friend of mine I shared this with saying "Did those businessmen just commit suicide?" kinda stopped me, and I started getting a hunch. Searching the comments, I found one that confirmed my hunch, and I'm kinda of ashamed I didn't catch on soon. A parade of Japan's problems. And other places I assume. Well done.

The way that some people just ignore the whole thing raises SO MANY questions. Is it a halucination? Are they normal people walking and chanting, or is there no one at all? You wouldnt ignore a parade of people all chanting nonsense, but if there is no one there where do the people we see join go? Reality and dream all cease to mean anything as the gap between them melts..

i like how the music is so chaotic but also just repeating notes, really reinforcing the repetetive and chaotic cycle of the issues being portrayed 🗣🔥

You know, i just finished watching the full movie, and i have to say, most movies and shows, if they have an extremely fat character, will base that character's personality entirely around the fact that they are fat. SPOILERS: I was surprised that not only does Tokita have his own personality unrelated to his weight, but he's also a neurological technology genius and the main character of the movie has fallen in love with him. I think that's the first time i've ever seen a fat person in anime A)not be there just for comedic relief and B)have someone interested in them romantically. I'm a little embarrassed to say that i didn't see it coming. That, combined with the generally abstract nature of the movie, made me find it very refreshing and enjoyable to watch. I hope i don't forget to recommend it to some of my friends, because i think they would enjoy it too! And the soundtrack by Hirasawa Susumu is like a big cherry on top!

A beautiful scene. I’m pretty sure it’s about what role escapism has in society, good and bad.

I hadn't watched this since high school, I really should consider revisiting it, I hardly remember what happened in the film anymore! I love Susumu Hirasawa's music and Satoshi Kon was an amazing director!
