Things that are seen as invasive seem to be things that have benefits people really need right now and that would help everybody out so much. For example dandelions and most "weeds". What a beautiful and wonderful world we live in. Most people seem to forget with all the chaos in there lives. I just discovered the benefits of Mimosa this week! I have been cutting these down everywhere on my property for years! No more! I have tried the tea and am going to try the bark today. I have struggled with depression, anxiety, past trauma, and grief...tried big pharma, only numbs and doesnt actually help anything. Looking forward to trying all of the Mimosa on my healing journey. How many flowers do you put in a cup to steep them? Do you pour boiling water or just hot water over the flowers? How long should I steep them? Also is it necessary to take off the tiny green stem attached to the flowers before steeping? I have a beautiful Mimosa in my back yard and other ones in our neighborhood. I also grew up with a big Mimosa in our back yard growing up in Western North Carolina. We climbed the tree and played in it all the time. I was always drawn to it by the heavenly flowers and leaves. I had no idea of its medicinal properties until about 10 years ago but I didn't know the best way to use it until now. I'm so glad I found your channel. I have them in my yard in Missouri... my mom planted 2 she dug up off the side of the road way back in 1989... Those 2 are long gone as they only live about 20 years... I have 1 big one left and countless small ones all over after trying to get them all off my property for years. I have been letting them grow back because my daughter in law loves them, but they wont grow where she lives in Colorado. I have been working on turning some of them into bonsi type container trees she can keep in the house. I just found out about the medicinal value 2 months ago and so glad I did!! I have ADHD and I'm Autistic. I will definitely be keep more of them in my yard! but they sure do make a horrendous mess...lol...

My daughter and I brought a basket of mimosa flours into our house thinking the house would smell as pretty as the yard. When we came in we both wrinkled our nose to a very strong urine smell. We never brought them in again but enjoyed them in the breeze instead. They are still my favorite tree, but we pull up hundreds when they pop up like weeds. They will take over like she said, they are everywhere. We are in S. Tn.

Mimosa is a nitrogen fixer for the soil. It adds nitrogen in other words. If you are growing it, cut it back frequently and just drop the leaves, branches, on your ground as a mulch. As it decomposes it will also add nitrogen to the soil. Comfrey does the same thing as does black walnut.

They are beautiful!! They wilil take over and you are forever weeding them. Butterflies and hummingbirds love them. I had to cut mine down because itwas falling on my rood and hard to clean off. It didn't die, and is coming back. I will be keeping it trimmed, and have found many trees popping up all over my yard. I plan to keep one, not close to my home so it wont get on my roof. It is one of the most exotic and beautiful trees I have seen. I wish it wasn't envasive. My rabbits like to eat it. =) Now I am finding out we can too.

Very Informative Video. Just for the record, they were introduced to America around 1745. Also, I live in Indiana close to Cincinnati, Ohio (zone 6a) and I occasionally see them on properties where they have spread through self-seeding. So they are at least partially naturalized here as well. I even discovered a seedling growing in a pot that a bird had deposited, my first Mimosa.

only bad thing about mimosa trees is that the branches are extremly weak and are prone to internal rot. you might want to prune it they respond really well to pruning. and you dont have to be a expert pruner either, so dont be afraid to cut away. also if you are a leather worker mimosa bark ground up is a natural non toxic tanner.

Hello, how do you deal with all the tiny bugs on the flowers when making tincture, washing is tricky because they are so very delicate and bugs don't come out anyway so I just shake gently and go ahead and make tincture and will filter out anyway. Do you have any better suggestions? Thanks!

Yes you can make a glycerite with the flowers. maybe mix that with lemon balm. You won't be able to extract anything from the bark with glycerine though, so keep that in mind. But yes you could also simmer it in water and make a tea.

I know this was 3 years ago but, I hope you can answer 2 important questions ... I saw a large Mimosa tree in my neighborhood and most of the tree and its branches hang over a sidewalk So I picked some blossoms and broke off a small branch. What I found on the stems and bark are what look like scales as they easily come off is this normal ~ Or Could the tree be infested with critters such as scales ? I don't want to make tea from the blossoms if that is the case. I did notice that the tree's trunk looks very old~ It's quite a large tree :) Could I root a branch for my own Mimosa Tree?

Hi, those are great questions. I'm not sure what kind of scales they might be, but I know that anything scaley isn't normal. Mimosa trees are susceptible to disease and don't typically live over 15 years. It is likely there is something going on with that tree since it's older. The best thing to do it find a different tree to harvest from. It will not root from a cutting, and ethically you wouldn't want to do that either. They are very invasive and it would be better to harvest from a tree that is established. Planting invasives is not advised. Hope that helps :) -Alicia

Giving dosages isn't legal. I personally take 3-5 droppers as needed up to 4 times a day. Caution always with new plants.

120 proof contains 60% alcohol. You would need to use half shine and half water to get it to about 30% alcohol and then use that to tincture in. I do that a lot. The only things that need 120 proof or even 160 proof would be things like medicinal mushrooms that you would make a "double extract" (look that up) out of or extremely resinous plants like cottonwood buds, gum weed, etc- where you need that higher proof to be the stronger solvent for resins

actually, drying the flowers is fine. They don't lose potency. Either for flower essences or for tincturing. For tincturing, volatile oils and chemical constituents are still in the dry plant material. The noise from the mic is pretty bad. Had to turn up the sound to hear you, but then the mic is rustled and it's bad.
