The pebble tray does nothing, the water evaporates

First, this comment was probably 6 years old when you replied, so there’s that. Second, let’s think about what you are saying, with context. This comment is saying that the plant doesn’t mind low humidity. This may be useful information for some. Your comment is saying that the pebble tray doesn’t do anything, because the water evaporates. That is the entire point of the pebbles, to put water in it that will evaporate. To increase the humidity around the plant. Not only are you not adding any helpful information, you are completely missing the point of what the tray is actually doing. Nice. Very nice.

My son got a seed pack from the local supermarket and we used the soil supplied (it was actually a Shy Plant /Sensitive Plant Kit). We planted some seed in a pot and few came up and were thriving as I was keeping the soil damp ...but as I transplanted them, they couldn't deal with the shock. So next batch of seed, I planted them outside (when it got to around 80 F). I planted on a bigger pot and let it grow pretty good size before moving (noticed the root hitting the bottom holes. So far so good (no flower yet)

One of my fav plants as well...CARE IDEAS I have had good sucess with them in a 50% 50% compost/ soiless mix and have it in a self watering pot..These lil trees ( they are about 2 1/2 foot tall and 2 1/2 foot around left un trimmed ) They like to be trimmed when branches become a bother with thorns too... Keep them moist and best size pot when full grown is a hanging basket pot... Pink Powder puff flowers turn into seed pods in late fall ( Zone 6 ) Seeds germination is at 70 * X 5 days..Plant three seeds per pot and you can be sure to get plants...Pot them up as they grow... Never any Hot Full Sun..Brite light is best but will grow in any sun, or sun shade mix is good too I have them growing in shade as well... Scortching full sun..it will burn...The show is over after you get seed pods, that form after the flowers..there ripe when there a tan brown little seed pods, as the little tree will just die off in the winter due to no sun power...Quick go start some seeds, all growing season long makes great give away plants too

Hi, sorry to hear about your plant, it must have burned in the sun :( right now give her shade and as low temperatures as you can without beeing in the freezing cold. Water her regularly and you can mist the remaining leaves or stems to give humidity. Wish you good luck!

Mimosa trees are same family but different characteristics than the trees. We grew them in our commercial greenhouse when I was a kid - and I was able to tame them by talking and gently stroking them. Took a while but then I was able to stroke them without collapse - which would drive my brothers crazy, a they couldn't

i know this is from a month ago, but i'll try to give some advice. the one i've been growing since a seed used to have the same issue, but it never hindered it from growing, it just needs more time to strengthen. if you can, get a tall but thin wooden stake for it to lean onto to help keep it up, and look into a getting a high potassium plant food/fertilizer to put in every 2-3 weeks to make sure it gets enough nutrition. if you're keeping it on a window sill, be sure to move the pot to the other side every other day. it'll grow askew from trying to get closer to it's light source, but keeping an even amount of sun on each side will counter that. the pot i've been growing it in is medium sized. i've only had to transfer it once. i can give exact measurements if you need them, but something the size of a yogurt container will work just fine. good luck, giorgi!

annie a I have researched and asked biologists , she told me that there are several subspecies of mimosa and three of them are the most popular; First one is appeared in the video (its like bush), Second one is more like a tree. And the third one is described as grass ( we have that breed) She told me that it needs sun and water because naturally its tropical plant. and it will be great if you use some kinda stick to strengthen its trunk and use medium-sized pot. P.s. i love her :d after one year growth it has stunning "flowers" more like pink bubbles 😂 check this plus.google.com/photos/101633301369038102952/album/6463863998094602305/6463863999289065314

Thank you for posting this video. I have a Mimosa which I purchased form a nursery that's far away from my home. It arrived in the mail. I opened the package as soon as I received it. As I expected, all the leaves were closed due to the trip and previous handling. I followed all the care instructions to the T. This morning its leaves were opened, but they were not responding to my touch. Some of them closed slowly as I moved the pot and carried it with me. Does this mean this is always going to be the case? My plant is not a mature plant, so I don't know if I have to wait for new leaves to grow in order to see the full effect of its sensitivity. I need this plant for educational purposes. The class will not take place until January, so I'm hoping that by then everything will normalize. I live in San Diego, CA. I have it inside the house during the night and the morning as it gets very cold. I called the nursery from which I purchased it but they're closed for the weekend. I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!

Hi Leanna, I am sorry I grow orchids mostly, I had the mimosa for 1 year and it got too big for my growing space so I gave it up. I am not an expert on its care, it did ok for me. If the pot is very tiny your could repot it into a larger pot and use a well draining media like peat moss mixed with perlite. I think she needs a bigger pot too if you never repotted it :) Good luck!

I wanted to have this plant ever since I saw it on a backstage tour at Walt Disney World's Epcot in 2012 :) I finally bought one yesterday, and I'm now searching for some info on how to care for it. I've read somewhere that I could use tomato nutrient sticks. Do you think that is good for her? Also, I don't have much sunlight, so I was thinking about setting up some UV lights to give her the light she needs. Would that be a good idea? What would you recommend? By the way, you got a beautiful voice ;) Your plant surely must like that! hehe

+nena200able Well... just call the nursery again Monday ;) From what I can tell by your comment, if you have a young plant, I've noticed that young leaves don't react much. But after a couple of week or so, they're fully grown and will react. However, don't touch them all the time, because it takes energy from the plant, and could actually kill her if you continuously touch her. I don't quite understand however why it reacts when you are moving it but not when you are touching it. Unless being moved, kinda like being shaken, is a stronger stimuli then just being touched. Could be. But logically, if it reacts, then it should react to both stimulus. Give her light, sunlight is better but lately I've been keeping her under a strong LED light and it goes well. I've also noticed something interesting: she has her own clock. Meaning that if I'm not regular with the light, she still will open up in the morning, and close down after supper. Pretty interesting. Also, keep the soil moist, and if the pot sits on pebbles, like in this video, then keep the water level constant over the pebbles. Judging from my experience, you should have about 10-15 mores leaves in january. I don't know if it's good or not, it's just what I've seen from my plant.

smumdax Thank you! I will call them tomorrow. I've also been telling my family not to touch the poor plant. I guess with the shipping and all the movement it may have lost sensitivity. I hope the new leaves do better. Is your plant thriving?
@smumdax
@smumdax 9 жыл бұрын
+nena200able Unfortunately not for now. I've had her in a very small window, and I think she either missed sun or the night where just a little too cold. At some point, she daily lost leaflets and I was actually sad about it. Leaves eventually dropped... I had 3 stems, and when I tried doing something, it was too late for 2 of them. So one day I bought a strong LED light and put the plant on a shelves somewhere. I also bought a spray of Miracle Grow for Orchids and gave her a couple pushes each day for a week. I got to keep one of the stems alive and she's got 3 or 4 leafs. She seam to be ok for now. I keep the soil moist daily, spray her the mix once a week, and give her a good fill of water once a week also. This is all trials and errors. I don't really know what I'm doing, but for now it seams okay. I see a couple new leaves once a week. Slowly but surely.

IDK if you still are looking into a Mimosa. But the tree Mimosa can take some cold temps. I live in Maryland and we had a Mimosa tree in the backyard and it lived there for what most people say a little over 60 years so it saw snow serval feet deep and did ok. The downside is they are a weed tree (tend to live shorter lives then more hard trees) and they cant take too much water when I was in middle school it feel into a state of rot and in time we had to cut it down :( So a tree type may work for you, but this smaller grass thype may not. But they are a super cool plant to flowers are fluffy and look like something from Dr.Seuss.

What about the medicinal side of mimosa pudica that it is highly hepatoprotective as much as the milkthistle plant. It is not just a curiosity plant or in some countries, seen as a weed. I suppose nature (or the creator god or the highly advanced species of aliens who genetically engineered the human race), whatever that suits your belief system, has also created this medicinal plant to be easily identifiable by its ability to close its leaves so that animals in need could easily find it for emergency medicines in the wild. Its great medicinal properties has been so much ignored because the evil pharmaceutical indusry wants to sell only synthetic drugs which are toxic to the liver and kidneys, only because they can patent these synthetic drugs and hence come up with any price tag they want. The margin of profit earned by the pharmaceutical indstry is far more greater than drug smugglers, yet they are all legal because they are the power behind government legislations and law makers. Naturally occuring medicines from plants, no matter how much more effective they are than pharmaceutical drugs, can not be patented by law. Hence no profit in promoting naturally occurring herbal extracts. The pharmaceutical indusrty wants you to be sick by eating animal products like meat, fish, dairies, egg and want you to stop eating fresh vegetables, whole grains and other complex carbohydrate foods which has medicinal properties to induce health. Nowadays, they (the pharmaceutical industry) steer the course of medical and nutritional science schools to teach dietitians to preach to people to eat things that harm human health, like meats, lard, dairies, fish, and eggs. When people gets sick from eating these stuffs, then medical doctors takes over to prescribe liver-toxic and kidney-toxic drugs to their naive patients. Do not underestimate the "good" doctors inside most of these medicinal plants, which also includes most of your vegetables and fruits but not animals.

I'm trying to grow them from seed but they suddenly stopped growing and shriveled. I sprayed them with water everyday. They get the evening sun. My town is very humid and quite warm these days. In summer it turns to hell but I won't give them that burning sunlight, obviously. But what is their problem?

MissBophaLokei They need well drained soil, for mine I actually used fertile sand I collected from my riverbank and they seem to love it. I only water them after the sand seems to have completely dried. For this reason I recommend using a clear glass pot so you tell how damp the soil is. Otherwise if the soil is damp 24/7 the roots are very prone to rotting because of fungi.

+Chevez ℰ. (Terminative) Hi! Thanks!

+nena200able Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner, I have only grown mine from seed and they are responsive as soon as their first pair of leaves emerge. Movement is fairly energy intensive for these plants and they need to photosynthesize to make more energy. I'm guessing your guy was likely very exhausted after a long and dark trip in the mail so the best thing for him would be to leave him out in the sun and let him recover for a days. As far as temperature is concerned anything below 40F would be too cold for the plant. Kids love these plants and I think you made a great choice. Best of luck!

Chevez ℰ. Thanks so much. Well, the plant has begun to respond as it normally should. I'm still a little unsure of whether it will survive until the lecture takes place, because every other day it seems like there are leaves that start to turn yellow, then they shrivel and die. But at the same time there are new leaves sprouting. Thanks for your input. I just want mine to fully grow into a mature plant, I'm hoping for that.
