How to cut and pin fit a sofa slipcover without welt(piping)

This video I'll show you in detail, how to cut and pin fit a sofa slipcover with a waterfall style skirt. A waterfall skirt is incorporated into the body of the slipcover, not a separate skirt attached to the slipcover. This style of skirt is very popular now and is very appropriate for this style sofa.
I used revolution performance fabric, "sugar shack" in color way Glacier. It's a bit stiff but it supposedly wont stain and is easily cleaned. I'll keep you posted on that.

Hey Mim, not sure if you’ll see this. I’m crawling out of a 3 month long depression episode. yes. I can do that, but it would be really hard to tell what's what. Because you just sit at the sewing machine with a big ball of fabric and pins and sew along the pins. I still have to sew the second slipcover so maybe I'll do that.

I used some of the cotton drop cloth from Lowe’s to make the parts you can’t see. I’m very pleased with how it came out and I now know that I can do it in actual upholstery fabric if the canvas wears out or I want a different look.

I'm a fan of using 1/2 PVC piping in strategic locations of a slip cover. Sew rod pockets into the cover just wide enough so the pipe is easily inserted and later removed for laundry day. That diameter of pipe has enough flex for easy handling and yet is rigid enough to hold fabric in place. Wedge the piped pockets into the crevices of the furniture. It remains in place during normal use, but is not difficult to pull out when you're ready to wash the cover. Another advantage to the method is that becomes possible to make the cover in sections that can be applied and removed separately. PVC is a smooth plastic so it will not stain or abrade the cloth. If your fabric is lightweight and unlined, consider using pipe in the hem of the skirting or use standard curtain weights so the skirting will hang even and straight. Some high end clothing is sewn with weights inside the hem so the garment will have the desired drape and movement.

Most look so sloppy, and you have done a great job in demonstrating how you did it.... but I'm still a little overwhelmed. I have a long couch with a deep bench cushion, and 5 down pillows across the back. The couch is well made, but I'm getting tired of the 5 pillows. When my family comes over, they are everywhere. I'm wondering if I could reinvent back cushions similar to your back cushions somehow, for a tidier look, then try a slipcover.

Thank you! My pet peeve with slipcovers is that they fit like a glove so it looks more like upholstery than slipcover. I totally understand what your talking about with the pillows. YES! I would probably contact your local upholstery supply company and get foam cut to the exact dimensions you need for back cushions or one single cushion. OR look on FB marketplace for cushions. then you can cut them to the size you need. I've seen people sell cushions. Foam is expensive. Or look at habitat for a cheap sofa...keep the cushions and dump the sofa...a lot of work but might be the cheapest if you have a truck and know where the dump is. idk...I'm so cheap I do crazy stuff to save a buck...kinda silly but you do what you gotta do.

Hi Mimzy, I bought 2 matching sofas (100% cotton twill slipcovers) from Rooms to Go down here in Florida. They don't recommend washing but that is why I like slipcovers - they can be washed. So I was going to recover them with white twill that I have washed in hot water and put in a hot dryer. I would also like to make them a little looser in case of shrinkage. Every slipcover I have bought shrinks - PB, Restoration Hardware in linen, IKEA. Even without putting them in the dryer!! It's so frustrating to buy slipcovers that you can't really wash and no one wants to dry clean them. And I don't want all the chemicals!!

Yep! I hear ya! I don’t understand why Pottery Barn, etc don’t preshrunk their fabric! I think if you prewash you’re fabric and dry it on high you’ll be good to go.

I'm never upholstery but side chair and four dining room chairs. But I have sold throughout the years a lot of clothes. For your material I would suggest that you wash and dry before fitting and cutting out. That would eliminate any further shrinkage. Wash and dry before you make your slipcovers. Good luck.

I usually cut them off carefully. sometimes you can even pick out the stitches holding them on and then you have a nice neat back. It's all gonna be covered by the slipcover anyway. then I make my back cushions loose box cushions. Its very simple. I should make a video.

Thank you! The fabric I used for these sofas is a performance fabric by revolution fabrics. It’s a great fabric for upholstery but not the greatest for a slipcover. It spot cleans really well , but doesn’t wash super well in the washing machine. For slipcovers I’d use their slipcover twill by revolution.

I'm not a skilled sewer, but have made a couple of slipcovers. I wish I'd thought to raise the pieces up like you've done, that would have helped cut down all the hunching over I had to do while pinning. The last cover was for a recliner...PIA!

not sure if I missed it but I never saw the FINAL result of this project -- completed couch with cushions etc?! If you have a picture can you post it? I bought some canvas drop cloths at Harbor Freight that I'm going to try and cover my sofa with. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on fabric and I figure if I mess up it won't have cost me that much money! Got them on sale for $11.99 for 9 X 12 drop cloths -- so 24 bucks for TONS of fabric! just gonna give them a wash first. thanks for being such a great inspiration!

I haven’t posted the finished slipcover yet. That’s coming this week. Drop cloths are a GREAT place to start!!! I recommend that, for the exact reasons you stated. I’ve done quit a few drop cloth slipcovers .

Very detailed video and so helpful . Interesting how you have ‘railroad’ the fabric (it was a new term for me as I’m a beginner in sewing) . I have looked online on how to sew a slipcover, every other website suggests using width wise fabric . I can see you railroaded the fabric to minimise seams, but is there any disadvantage in using this method (as it seems that width wise fabric on sofa slip cover is the preferred way). Maybe I didn’t understand it correctly . Thanks

The only reason you cannot railroad your fabric is if it has a pattern that can’t be sideways, or the fabric has a “nap” that would look different if it was railroaded like a velvet or a chenille.

Hi Mimsy, Thank you for this tutorial. I have been contemplating making a cover for our sofa for so long (ours is 15 years old, horrible colour and definitely looking used, with two kids and two cats - but it is so, so comfy and with enough space for the whole family, cats and visitors...). Do you have any ideas or advice how to cut and pin fit, when the sofa is not symmetrical? Our sofa is one of these corner sofas, so cutting and pin-fitting inside-out will not work, because it is not symmetrical... ----- I discovered you channel only a couple of days ago and I am already hooked on it. So many great tutorials, and the way you do it, it is very encouraging, even for a person like me who does not sew a whole lot (I would love to get into it, but I lack the time and also the patience... You have to cut and pin right side out. which means you pin the whole thing like you're going topstitch it, but then the pins would need to be switched around after you take the cover off the sofa.OR you would have to top stitch the whole thing. I wouldn't recommend it for a first slipcover or even a second. I'm sorry. specially if your sofa is large...and it sounds like yours is big. No, I did not. It’s revolution performance fabric so it’s not supposed to be washed. It definitely CANNOT be heat dried. Although I have washed it after I made it, but I let it air dry on the sofa. It’s not really an appropriate fabric for a slipcover but wanted to try it anyway. Revolution does make washable performance fabric though.

Yes. It’s by Revolution performance fabrics. It’s called Sugar Shack in colorway Glacier. It’s their most popular fabric. I really like it. However it says not washable…but what that means is it’s not dryable with heat. They also make a slipcover twill that’s washable and looks nice.

How is a slipcover made for an asymetrical sofa-like one section of a sectional. Reverse pinning will not work since there is an arm on one side and none on the other. Any help is appreciated and I really hope you have a video. Your videos are very good!

Hi There, This video was incredibly helpful and gave me so much insight on how to make a slipcover. I have started my own, but I have a couch that has fixed (non-removable) T seat cushions. I am getting stuck at the part where the arm meets the "T" part of the seat cushion and I'm not sure how to or where to tension cut. If you could recommend any tutorials that might cover (play on words intended) pinning and tension cutting for this type of cushion, that would be tremendous. hi amy, sorry for the delay. You're probably finished with your project by now. But to answer your question. I would not make a slipcover for a sofa that had attached seat cushions. It will never look neat and tidy. Every time you sit down it will shift around and be messy. The relief cuts wont work because when sit down the cushions compress and may rip the fabric at that seam. If it was me i'd cut off the cushions and make box cushion covers.

Yes, if you want. I probably won’t serge this because of the type of fabric. But if you use a canvas or a linen/linen blend then serging is necessary because the fabric frays A LOT when washed.

So informative. I've been waiting to upholstery my couch a little intimidated. Not sure about measuring correctly. My sofa and love seat has back and seat cushions with pleated arm fronts. I really like your choice of fabric. Does it have a safe guard finish? Do you have intentions on washing slip covers?

Thank you. Yes this fabric is Revolution performance fabric . According to Revolution nothing will stain it. In the past I always wash all my slipcovers , not sure what I’ll do with this . I think I’ll try washing a piece of the fabric and see. It def CANNOT be put in the dryer though. Which is ok cuz I usually put my Slipcover’s back on wet and let them air dry.I’ll keep you posted.

nope, really easy actually. you just have to remove it carefully so you don't get stuck with a pin. Getting it back on is easy as well. It takes a little finesse to get it on straight and square, but max 10 minutes.

Wondering how much total material it took for your couch? I have one that has rounded arms that curve around like a candy cane (from inside seat) the arm curves around 2' 10" then a 17" straight drop to the bottom. Inside width is 5'9" It has 2 large seat cushions and 2 large loose back cushions. The cushions all have zippers so I thought I could turn them inside out and use them for a pattern of sorts. The 2 seat cushions are mostly a rectangle but at the front it curves out in front of the arms. The skirt drop is only 11". I have tried to get a large throw that would cover the whole sofa, but it would need to be 108" x 84" and they don't seem to come that big. A fabric store is closing nearby and is selling material at 50% off or more.

This sofa took approx 17 yards, I think. If you can find fabric cheap that would be great. Another great option for a throw is a king size quilt/coverlet/blanket. I’ve seen some on FB marketplace that I thought would make a great sofa cover.

This took about 16 yards I think MOL. It took less than most sofas because it’s so square, so there’s hardly any wasted fabric. And it’s low to the ground so less that way too.

This is a great instructional video and I love how the slipcover came out. Can you tell me what weight fabric you used? I'm planning to sew a slipcover for similar sofa and would like %100 cotton at 10 or 12 ounce weight. Concerned that my sewing machine may not handle 12 oz weight. Thank you!

This is Revolution performance fabric, it's pretty heavy weight. I prefer 100% cotton and usually use 10oz.. But I've been curious about these "performance" fabrics for a while so i tried it. Yes, it would be a good idea to test to see if your machine will handle the thickness of the fabric because if you are going to use welt you'll be sewing through 4 layers consistently and in some places 6 or more layers of fabric. I often have to manually walk my stitches through the thickest places when i use my home sewing machine.

By the way, I suggest using a zigzag stitch on all the outer edges of your cuts, maybe even twice, in order to reinforce the fabric from fraying when you wash it in your machine on gentle

Hi mimzy, I can barely sew a button on, but interested in getting my couch, chair and ottoman slip covered. I still love them, as they are barely used, but need an update. I love in Ohio. Can you tell me what, where, how I can search for someone online that does upholstery? Where might a person post this is what they do, and how will I tell if they really know what they’re doing? I’ve looked up upholstery, but only find companies that would charge me 3’xs what the furniture is even worth. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Google slipcover workroom in my area. I know there’s not to many of us that do slipcovers. Upholstery is much more common. But yes, it’s expensive. I would say the least you’d pay for a sofa is about $900 plus the cost of fabric. So often times you could buy cheap new sofa for less. But a custom quality piece is worth it. An upholsterer in your area could probably recommend a slipcover maker but slipcovers are not to much less money.

This is such a helpful series! My only question is why doesn’t the fabric fray where the relief cut is made? I understand why clipped curves don’t fray, but these corners are such stress points that cutting that close to the seam scares me.

good question. it does fray a bit. but the stitches of your seam holds it together. BUT that's why will almost always backstitch in the corners of my pieces, because of the stress. there's no other way... you have to do relief cuts or else the fabric wont lay down flat.

You could absolutely just make pencil lines instead of using pins. I just find it easier when I get to the sewing machine to have as many pins as possible so I can just zip through the sewing without having to adjust my fabric and match notches and pencil lines. Some people rather than pinning, cut a bunch of V notches in the fabric and then match them up at the sewing machine. I find that to be twice as much work. I'd rather put in a few extra pins then just sew right next to my pins. When you get to the sewing(specially with a sofa)there's soooooo much fabric it's hard to tell what's what. That's why I use tons of pins. BUT, there's many ways to slip a sofa....

I purchased dad a recliner cover that’s supposed to be non slip, it’s one that you lay over it’s supposed to hold on with one tie. but it still slides and the tie is useless. Any ideas?

Return it.😅. Recliners are impossible to cover. You can reupholster them but not slipcover, the moving parts are difficult. Especially if it’s leather or vinyl, forget it. Buy another one. Sorry recliners are my nemesis. 😬
