As a black viewer I was actually very pleased they didn’t make race a pivotal aspect of the plot. Whenever black characters are introduced to a plot their whole story line is centred on just their race and it’s honestly exhausting. The characters are subject to ridicule and constantly have to fight against racial issues. Honestly I loved watching the black characters just be humans, fall in love, and have good time. It was so refreshing. This mad made it so easy to fall into the plot and just watch to enjoy rather than worry when the poc character is going to be ridiculed neck.

IMO that’s exactly why the plot point of the marriage between king and queen ending segregation shouldn’t have been mentioned. I was all for the absent racial tensions plot, but acting like everyone had been segregated until the point of marriage added it back in for me- but also never addressed how society magically wasn’t biased anymore. And honestly, it didn’t really help the overall plot of Simon and Daphne’s relationship progression. If they had just left that out I think the story would have been better. I am not a BIPOC tho so my perspective may totally be off!

It just once again gave this systemic issue the "one individual fixes it all" treatment. Thanks so much for this video!

Yes yes yes yes! I wish they had just went with pretending that the society in-universe was just always integrated. Especially considering that real life Queen Charlotte has been white-washed and, like you mentioned, all the racism and slavery going on at the time, I think the idea of a "colour-blind" reimagining is a lot more interesting than Shonda's insistence on the power of interracial dating (which almost always includes one white partner). Also there were so many beautiful dark skinned Black people as extras and I don't understand why not any of them could have had a speaking role if this show wants to call itself diverse. Though that's a Netflix problem more than anything I guess. But as a dark skinned Black woman who loves period pieces and historical costume, it was such a let down. Also I liked Lady Danbury's character and styling the most too but would it have killed anyone on set to pluck the hairline on that wig?? The real life Queen Charlotte was a white woman. The ancestor people point to is a woman called, Madragana, who was born in 1230. It's disputed whether Madragana was Hispanic or Moorish. Queen Charlotte was born in 1744. There is only one portrait and one quote which people use to back up this claim about Queen Charlotte. All her other portraits portray a period typical German woman. She wasn't biracial or mixed race. I have a not insignificant amount of First Nations ancestry (through one of my great-parents, with the rest being of Northern, Central and Western European ancestry), and I think it would be completely insane to consider myself biracial. Madragana would have contributed almost nothing to Charlotte's genetic make up after 15 generations.

I think it was needed because a lot of people at first were wondering why blacks were being represented in a show that was primarily based in the 18th century. Without that background story, it would have left many people still confused. You have to remember, we are talking about the union between the king and queen, not the prince and princess like meghan markle and prince harry. During the 18th century the queen was the one to ensure that Britian colonized a lot of ethnic countries and was the main reason behind slavery and the division between whties and blacks. Obviously as time went on race relationshions changed, as did the laws and statutes to encamping the diversifying and advancement of european countries under british ruling, however this show depicts what life would have been like under differnt rulling and laws. It's actually very inresting. Many people don't understand this aspect unless you are a history lover like me.

(Edit : because of a reply of someone, I now have to clarify that I am disagreeing with not liking Daphne painting herself as a victim, not that it is not rape.) I disagree which is because of this comment I saw on another comment on this video, which I agree with = "Not really trying to be insensitive to the issue that is being brought to light here or up for discussion. But she didn't lure him into the bedroom, he fetched her and asked her if she was ready for bed to which she folllowed him and they started making love. During the scene she postions herself on top and it seems to catch the Duke by Surprise. But further on he realizes that he is close to release to which he says "wait, wait" because it seems as though she wouldn't move or have been able to move in time for him to pull out. But he could have easily maneuvered over it, she wasn't overpowering him. He just thought she knew that she was to get off once he was close. Also keep in mind she knows very little about sex, and she was not educated about the matter propeprly by her mother, it was her lady's maid who explained it to her because she was probably confused as to why he was pulling out I guess. She didn't move in order to test a theory because she wanted to see if what she had been told was true. If you watch the scene again you'll realize that the issue or that scene only happened because there was miscommunication or lack of communication between the two. The Duke said "I thought you knew how a child came to be" and she indicated that she didn't and thought it was a case where he had fertility issues. Plus I mean, it was sonewhat folly of him to even assume she knew becsuse she didn't even know about masturbating and the sorts. But I digress, I think the biggest issue with the couple has always been miscommunication or a lack of it, we even saw that issue when he came to her room at the inn and he was expalining the reason he had been so distant is that he thought she hated him and she expressed the same. They have always seen to be on different pages with commuication which affected their relatolnship. And in all fairness Daphne is a victim, she is a victim of a society that does not bat an eyelash to marrying off young girls who are unaware of sexual relations. And while her and the Duke and feelings for each other, he is the one who kissed her at a public event knowing fully well he did not want to marry or have kids. But irrespective whenI watched that scene I didn't perceive either to be a victim, just two people who clearly had alot of shit to work out between them. I mean ...they hardly knew each other." What she did was wrong, and is marital rape, however it makes complete sense for Daphne to have no idea why it is even wrong and it was clear she had no idea that what she did is anything bad. The only complaint I'd have is that they didn't properly show us that Daphne realized that what she did is rape and bad, and how she learns off of that. However her painting herself as the victim after this makes complete sense, as she literally had just found out how people even get pregnant and as the comment I copied above says, was testing that out. It's easy for people to have issue with the way Daphne was portrayed after this scene, but its very realistic because of the ridiculous amount of ''sex-ed'' she's ever had which is 0, she didn't even know what masturbating was, so it definitely would not make sense for her to know about marital rape and that forcing him to do this counts as that.
@javencummins14263 жыл бұрын
@@yulana990 I am not reading all of that. But I looked at a little of it. She may have not lured him into the bedroom but she didn't listen to when he was alarmed at what she continued to do. You can't test things out theories on people because you feel you have the right to. Especially when it has to do with sexual interactions. Victim of society or not it can never justify behavior like that. If you are making these excuses for Daphne I'm scared to find out how you would deal with situations like that in real life. I was upset when the Duke kissed her in the garden too, putting her livelihood in jeopardy like that. But at the end of the day Daphne agreed to marry him knowing that he could not give her kids. Whether it was a choice or not she does not have the right to control that matter. Yes they sorely need better communication and understanding of eachother but that is not a excuse. Nothing is an excuse for raping someone. The fact that the writers do not make her acknowledge that what she did was wrong and reward her with a child at the end of season one is upsetting. If she had not victimized herself in that situation and owned up to her mistakes, I would have no problem with them having a child in the future. Because of Daphne and Simon's lack of development as a couple I can not see them working out at the moment.

@@EH23831 TW: sexual assault/ rape towards the end of episode 5 (?). After asking her maid how it actually happens, she lures him to the bedroom and they start to have sex. She spins around so that she is on top of him and keeps going (despite his protests) until he ejaculates into her. To force a man to empregnate you against his consent is rape. Daphne then proceeds to paint herself as the victim. Whilst Simon lying to her was wrong, she should not/the show should not have gone to the lengths of assault to confront him about it. Nor did the show address the issue and continued the narrative that Daphne was the victim. She could have confronted him verbally which might have suited the “Daphne is a victim” narrative much better and might have made her more compelling as a character. I'd also argue that if one wanted to make a POC inclusive period drama, the regency is an IDEAL era because the tight ringlets and simple, puffed hairstyles inspired by ancient can be done so beautifully with black hair and the whole time Marina's hair was just... hanging. Insane misses opportunity

I feel like there is plenty to discuss in this serie. I too didnt understand why they felt the need to "explain" why POC were accepted in this society. It does not make sense. 1) the myth that love transcend race issues is frankly old and dangerous, maybe it's possible the king fell in love with one WOC but does it mean he didnt have/and still has not racist prejudicices against her and her people ? No. 2) Even in this post-racial society, we would see ordinary racism, cuz you can not expect rich privileged white people to just accept and share their wealth with POC after years of colonialism and racism. Also, all of the characters of color that are central to the storyline are lightskin u___u. (except for the aunt of the Duke, but she is kind of a "magical" black lady, another common trope for black characters :/ ) . There are two characters that the audience do not "know" well, but that are depicted differently because of their physical apparences. The prince (white, rich, young, "pretty") and Nigel Berbrooke (short, "ugly", fat). Nigel is portrayed as a horrible character, even before we know his true intentions, and these negative info are conveyed through...his looks : "ugly", short and fat. The Prince's true intentions are never really revealed, he does not pursue Daphne after her rejection (good boy), but something tells me he would not be demonized like Nigel if he did, just because he is an "attractive" character. In my opinion, we need to talk more about the beauty privilege in general, and fatphobia in portrayal of male characters. 3) SPOILER: The ending also didnt sit well with me, if Simon was the one to want children (Not Daphnee) and had forced Daphnee to be pregnant, it would have been labeled clearly as rape, and having Daphnee change her mind in the end and be finally happy with child would have been atrocious. I really do not think someone who swore to not have children all his life would change his mind that quickly, especially after been raped by someone who he trusted. Also, yeah why no bonnets ???

Nevermind the fact that tightlacing didn't become popular until the late 19th century, it's pretty much impossible to tightlace stays. The eyelets are handsewn and can't take the strain of someone yanking them with all their might. You will literally rip your stays if you try. And yes, I know from first hand experience (a friend and I were bored and tried to tightlace their stays lol did not end well they had to resew a new back panel). Once metal eyelets were introduced corsets could be laced with much more force. And even then, tightlacing was only really done by people who didn't have to get much work done

@kingmxjup18253 жыл бұрын
I think one of the main issues with the show is that the book series it is based on focuses on one couple and sibling at a time, and Daphne and Simon are honestly one of the weaker and more problematic pairings (although they do have on screen chemistry). So if you don't like the pairing, the show loses a lot of the charm because they are treading water with a lot of the side plots of the more interesting siblings. Also, other issues like the glaring heteronormativity and marital rape, are straight out of the book, while issues they wanted to include, like race and diversity, aren't dealt with, which makes things a bit unbalanced in transition to screen as they have to find ways to make both the book canon and their ambitious interests work with the characters, plot, and time period provided. There also is the push and pull of people wanting historical accuracy and diversity for a reason, and those who just think the show should avoid giving in-universe explanations and just roll with it. I think Bridgerton still has potential; it was fairly entertaining and it is nice to see a show based around romance and the female gaze do well. But, it does have some growing pains to work through that are difficult considering these problems.
@emilygoneferal3 жыл бұрын
i'm hoping they address the rape scene in the next season (maybe showing simon's lack of trust in daphne when they're having sex leading to an ACTUAL DISCUSSION ABOUT IT) but that's definitely optimistic
@selty3 жыл бұрын
Well the next sibling is even more problematic imo in that he is consistently physically domineering over the love interest and grabbing her wrists or chin or what have you. I liked the book but...I really hope they tone down his behaviour it was hard to read. The other issue is they’ve either accidentally or intentionally gay coded Benedict who is like every other sibling, hetero. I don’t know what they’re going to do there and I hope they treat it all with respect!
@kingmxjup18253 жыл бұрын
@@selty I haven't read the second book, I only read the first one for reference, but I definitely hope they will tone it down, the domineering trope is old and gross and I really had hopes for Anthony's character development. It seems like a lot of book readers talk about Anthony's growth, so I hope they actually try to show that. As a couple I have heard Kate and Anthony are less problematic than Daphne and Simon (in the sense Daphne and Simon had a LOT of issues with the whole lying to each other, marital rape and 'fixing' Simon's life goals and trauma without resolving it, issues that are inherent in the relationship as opposed to the enemies-to-lovers dynamic) however I can't speak to that I guess since I haven't read the books. In sum, I totally respect your take on that and hope the show tries to do well by the pairing. I agree on Benedict. It seems they wanted to make his character more exploratory and were going to do their own thing with him but backed out of it last second. Gave the character less charm, but we don't know necessarily what they have in store for season 2. Hope they can find a balance, although I understand being cautious about sacrificing book canon. It's unrealistic all siblings are straight though so it would be nice if they could do something with it lol.
