Minbo No Onna (1991) Opening to Japanese film directed by Juzo Itami (Better English Subs ?)

The opening to an excellent 1992 Japanese film. A grand old Japanese hotel wants a prestigious contract as the site of a summit meeting of important foreign officials. Unfortunately, this hotel is quite popular with the Yakuza, and is a favourite target of theirs for extortion. They employ a variety of schemes to con the establishment out of 'hush-money.' The hotel needs to rid itself of these gangsters, and finally begins to fight back by hiring Mahiru Inoue, a lawyer who is an expert at dealing with these criminals on their own terms. This film by Juzo Itami combines action with farce, as an all-out war ensues. (Imdb)

We watched this movie while discussing "sokaiya" (a variant on these guys who cause trouble in shareholder meetings and demand money to leave) in a Japanese sociology class. Ironically, this was in Kobe, home of the Yamaguchi-gumi. It's hard to find Juzo Itami's movies these days without spending a fortune on Blu-ray sets.

CantankerousDave - I watched a Dvd of this, but prefer the tv recording that this clip is from, as I prefer the English subtitle translation. I felt the Wnglish translation on the Dvd was too crude. You’re right about the prices. I love his films, but I won’t pay stupid money for them.

This film is brilliant, and the subject is relevant even for western audiences. Its basically about standing up against criminal intimidation and extortion. People get threatened by criminals and give in because they think the criminals are going to kill them. Or they cant call the police because the criminals are going to kill them. In reality criminals cant manage to kill everyone they threaten, and are scared of the juristical consequences like everyone else or even more because of their rap sheet. So its definitly possible to talk back to criminals and dont get intimidated by them. They are pretty much used to people obeying to their will and are caught off guard by having to do something

Jake Adelstein claims that one of his Yakuza contacts had flat out told him that Juzo Itami was pushed off that building by Goto-gumi thugs, that being exactly the sort of thing the Goto-gumi was known for. If it's true, it probably had to do with his next film, which was about Yakuza ties to Sokka-gakkai. In any case I think it's safe to say that a LOT of people, within Japan and out, think Juzo Itami was killed.

I think they're available on DVD somewhere in Europe, but the prices are too high and the English subtitle translation isn't as good, seems dumbed-down quite a bit. I bought A Taxing Woman on US Laserdisc a few years ago, but still haven't gotten around to watching it.

The Yakuza attacked him in anger over this film, but they didn't kill him. He committed suicide years later. This is from Wikipedia (so whether it's true or not); He purportedly committed suicide on December 20, 1997 in Tokyo, by leaping from the roof of the building where his office was located, after a sex scandal he was allegedly involved in was picked up by the press.
