The vocal was improvised by a young white session singer called Clare Torry, she was brought in by the producer after failed attempts to find a suitable overdub to finish the album track. The bands contributions, with David Gilmours pedal steel intro being a beautiful idea, were all complete, and voiceover interviews and sound effects (which Rodger Waters scattered throughout the finished album) were added. It was decided on this track just to leave the bits about not being frightened of dying, which is the voice of the doorman at Abbey Road Studios. David Gilmour was the only one of the band to give Clare any direction on what they wanted, very basically, the theme the track was trying to evoke and for her to not use any words. She did two full takes and stopped the third one, as she felt that was all she could give. The band never gave her any reaction to her performance, and it was only when she saw 'The dark side of the moon' album in a record shop and saw her name in the liner notes, that she found out they had used her session. There are various live versions, but IMHO it was never bettered, even by her own rare performances of the song. The band and Clare were initially all in the dark (ironically) searching for that magic ingredient. It was a miraculous moment in time when with a hunch and a mass of talent the heavens aligned and the dark side was illuminated.

If some one ever asks you what is the human soul just give them a set of good headphones and play them this. Claire Torry brought her soul to this. Every song pink floyd does touches you some how. This one holds you and tells you its ok to hurt, to fear, to love and to lose, we are all one when this song plays

You really need to sit in your recliner, put on your head-phones, switch on a black-light and for the next 45 minutes or so let your body float into the journey that is The Dark Side of the Moon record in it's entirety. Nothing else required. When the journey is done you will feel as if you had smoked one. At least that's how I feel. Please, keep the reactions coming. When I watch yours and others reactions it's like I'm experiencing my childhood and hearing these for the first time again.

Saw PF in 1974 here in NY during this DSOM tour, I was 16 and never forgot the rocket ship exploding on the stage while the plane crashed on movie screen behind the band. They were huge then along with Zeppelin, Sabbath, The Who....the list goes on and onOne note on my exposure to these bands, at the time my mother did books for the company providing the steel for the Nassau Colisseum which was built in the early 70's, a 15,000 seat arena where the Islanders and Nets played. I was able to get concert tickets through that connection, sometimes entire rows of seats, 15 seats in a row, so I would get 50 tickets and sell them at my school. I saw so many bands there, Allman Bros, The Dead, ZZ Top, Deep Purple....they all played there. What amazing memories, glad to see you enjoy the music 50 years later

The most amazing concert I have ever experienced. 1977 Animals concert at the old Milwaukee County Stadium 66,000 people packed in. We had grass passes close to the stage. The huge inflatable pig blew up in the parking lot and sounded like a bomb, lol we thought it was part of the show but nope lol. What amazes me is I was 13 years old and to this day people still enjoy listening to them. Truly one of the best bands ever! Thank you for sharing, this was one of my favorite songs of the album. It was recorded on the 1st take. She never got the credit she deserved unfortunately.

I knew this song because I own the record and listening to it was always something special. But when I heard it during a live Pink Floyd concert (I think it was in 1985 in Rotterdam), the vocals performed by a black lady whose name I have forgotten (shame on me), I felt goose bumps all over. As you say, there are no lyrics, but no lyrics are needed to convey emotion. I very glad that young people (much younger than I am) still appreciate this music of the 1970s and 1980s. It proves that much of that music are classics.

@musiclover93612 жыл бұрын
Actually, she did it in two-and-a-half takes but no less impressive. It is a tour de force. As another commenter here noted, when played live, it needs three singers to do what she did alone. A masterpiece.
@tjcole123 жыл бұрын
The vocal solo is done by Claire Torry (a woman) and the message is to portray the 7 emotions of grief or the feelings involved before you die. Shock or Disbelief, denial, anger, bargaining, guilt, depression and acceptance. Knowing this, listen to the song and you can understand how her voice flows beautifully between every emotion.

I've been blessed to see them twice. 'Twas absolutely wonderful. Hoosier Dome in Indy in 88 i think it was and then again same place in 94.. though the dome went by another name by then.. now its The Indiana Convention Center. Pink Floyd.. my soul is in love with them.. the concerts were amazing.. everyone is just so "stunned" "relaxed" ..smh.. theres not the words to really describe it.. "laid back".. oh... "IN AWE!" I guess thats the best way.. yes, In awe... I can still feel it.. it isn't something you just listen to.. you feel it.. around you... within you. I always stayed sober during a concert, I wanted, and still do, remember each one well.. Spent a lot of time in Indy feeling music...lol.. man oh man.. I've seen Metallica, kiss, tesla, suicidal tendencies.. and even Larry gatlin.. ha.. a country singer.. and Primus.. if you can listen to Primus- Wynonna's big brown beaver.. oh man.. funky.. I was so sore the next day, the sorest I'd ever been after a concert, especially next day..hahaha. I've seen so many I've lost count.. I sure do wish you and your wife the greatest musical adventures of your lives. Lots of Love and prayers ❤

I saw Pink Floyd during their Umma-Gumma Tour in 1971. I had two tickets and no one wanted to go with me, even my girlfriend at the time. I finally gave the ticket to a friend who said he would come but probably would not like it. About 40 years later, I ended up with 2 free tickets to the Roger Waters Dark Side of the Moon tour and the same friend came with me. I love the way they put speakers all around you , the sound comes from everywhere and you are completely immersed in sound. You can feel the low notes like they are inside of you. The music becomes a part of you, like at a "Yes" concert. Then lasers start revolving, pigs start flying around and in this case a full sized small aircraft came out of the rafters and crashed beside the stage during one song. The show is big and there is no such thing as a bad mix. You can hear every note no matter where you are sitting. Roger Waters is touring again in 2020, see them before it is too late!

In 1977, they released an album called 'Animals'. The album opens with a short track...'Pigs On The Wing' & a reprise of the same track closes the album. Next up are the only 3 other songs.... 'Dogs'......'Pigs'.......& 'Sheep'. It's a MASTERPIECE of an album. Probably MY favorite, and I've been a fan of Pink Floyd since first hearing them back in 1975. 'Dogs' ( at 17 minutes + ) is quite the roller coaster of a ride. 'Sheep' is my 2nd favorite.

The piano part was originaly intended for a riot scene in the movie Zabriskie Point (1970), but the director didn't want such a calm and relaxing music to something so violent. So it luckily wasn't used before Dark Side Of The Moon. Singer Claire Torry did this in one take. And really on the first attemt. Expresses the different states of mind when dying. In live shows they used three singers doing a part each, Torry did it on her own. Brilliant.

Long time Pink Floyd devotee here. Completely agree re the emotional aspect of their music. But I add that for me though I'm a fan of so many awesome guitarists, no guitarist matches David Gilmour's play for the capability of wrenching emotions right from the furthest depths of my being. I know I'm not alone because so many times I've seen people reduced to tears simultaneously unable to express with words what they have just experienced. So, we must thank our maker that we have these recordings to share with those who were focused elsewhere at the time along with those who were not yet born but who are now glancing backwards for reasons to be discussed some other day.

Hey T, there are two bands that you have reacted to that are two of my favorite rock bands ever (the other being The Who), Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Don't get me wrong, Floyd is one of THE all-time great bands, but I always say that ya gotta be careful when it comes to Floyd, IMO. In other words, don't come in from a night of partying, early 20s in age, and decide to put on Dark Side of the Moon while still stoned from Sensimilla, because it could lead to some VERY strong emotions (some not so good!), as I discovered one night many years ago after listening to "Time" and "Great Gig in the Sky" back-to-back. I didn't listen to Dark Side for a few years after that incident (I listen to them now), but Floyd can sometimes be SO good, they can be scary.
