What a beautiful song. Elton John, then a session musician, on piano. When Graham Nash left the Hollies in '68 to form Crosby, Stills and Nash, most thought that the band was in trouble. But in 1969 they had this huge hit and several fine songs to follow. There have been several instances of the phrase "He isn't heavy, he's my brother" or "he ain't heavy", being used in print going back to 1884, most having a religious connotation or a connotation of helping out your fellow man. Legendary band with many fine songs to listen to, Biz.

Hey, man. I'm not trying to contradict you, but you were correct. It was a harmonica if you look at the live version, you'll see the singer, pull it out and tear it up, so your ear was 100% correct, it is a harmonic. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Not trying to be a jerk or anything.I just thought since you thought it was the keyboard and not automatic.I'd just throw it out there.Love your station, man, you rock and remember we aint heavy. We're all each other's brother.stay kool bro. This song was inspired by a story we were all told in Catholic grade school in the early 60's. It's about two orphaned brothers, an older one carrying his younger brother in a snow storm. It's been too long for me to remember why they were out in the storm or where they were going though

I have been a fan of The Hollies since I was a kid, my mum had their LP's. The story I heard was from the Vietnam War and two African American brothers were in the same platoon, one was injured and the other carried him 10 miles to the nearest aid station. A journalist asked the brother that carried his sibling, "wasn't he heavy", the brother replied "he aint heavy, he's my brother". There are several stories going around about how the song came to be, I prefer the one above as the timing and the wording fits. Several years ago the song was used in a beer ad in Scotland, it went to number one on the charts overnight, almost 20 years after it was first released. I think it was Allan Clarke that when asked about the song, said it had to be written in the 60's, if it was written today it would be "i'm too busy, carry your own weight".

@@haruchai I think it's more a parable than anything else but memories floated up last night. There's a 1938 movie w/Bing Crosby called Boys Town about Catholic priests running an orphanage and the story is used in the movie. I don't know if it's supposed to be based on a true story or not
