Nitromethane is CH3NO2 so yeah it carries a lot of its own oxygen. It has the effect of raising volumetric efficiency because there is a lot less air (which is 80% nitrogen) in the cylinder allowing for a lot more reactants in the same space. That and it's also an extremely high octane fuel etc.
@Technotranceism Жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly, I would imagine that the plugs and ignition system, aren't very happy!
@andersjjensen Жыл бұрын
From what I can read nitromethane has a lower octane rating than ethanol, but because you comparatively hose the engine with it the evaporative cooling makes up for a lot of that.
@chauvinemmons Жыл бұрын
Yes nitro has oxygen as part of the molecule with alcohol it may burn nitro it's not meant to provide oxygen mostly goes out the exhaust pipe nitro decomposers much like dynamite it's actually closer kin to TNT. Where do you get the real power issue fill the cylinder with more fuel than can exist at top dead center under massive heat and pressure it decomposes turning all that liquid into a gas that is your power if you have about 65 degrees of Mag lead 4 degrees 8 degrees 12 degrees of timing is not going to help. Run a hundred percent with about a 9 gallon pump you're liable to melt your Pistons if you had a real mechanical pump putting 20 25 gal a minute in and 40-60 degrees timing and 85 percent nitro in the the tank Now try that.

I'd like to see an experiment w/ mid-temp lacquer thinner. 40 some years, a one man crew-owner-driver of a local nitro dragster showed me his barrel of fuel. It was mid-temp LT. He said it was the only way he could afford to play w/ his toy. Back then, a 55 gal drum of mid-temp was about $100; nitro was right at $1000. The temp is drying rate when used cprrectly, for thinning lacquer. We used it for years, 1 qt to 15 gal gas, to de-carbon '70's smog motors to eliminate carbon build-up dieseling. Have used it for 40 years as a bad gas start up additive, or a tired motor revitalizer. Never damaged anything w/ it.

For anyone who doesn't already know: nitro contains both the fuel component and the oxygen component. So the more you add to the mixture, the more power it makes because it's largely bringing the oxygen with it. I really love seeing you actually test this out on the dyno though. VERY interesting stuff!

Our course youtube experiments turn to oxygenated fuels. Wait until they discover hydrazine and flak jackets 😂
@JETZcorp Жыл бұрын
In the 1960s, the Ramchargers drag racing team made up of Chrysler engineers started adding hydrazine to their fuel. The tech inspectors wondered why the tops of their pistons were turning green, and they made up some nonsense about dye and combustion analysis or some such. Eventually their supplier got curious and asked what sort of military aerospace project Chrysler were working on with the ultra-toxic hypergolic rocket fuel. When they explained that they were using it as an automotive racing fuel additive, the guy flipped his lid and said they were all lucky to be alive.

@@davelowets Diesel does not burn easily and the OP says nitro burns slow......... Hence the "like." I assume it does not burn easily, but maybe nitro does and is just slow. From Australia Nitro is a different beast. My best mate builds top fuel motors, has done for 20+ years, I still can't go near them. Can't see, can't breath. But they run 2" fuel lines, twin 400 amp magnetos. That's adding a fire hose of fuel and lightning for ignition, literally.

Great content! Maybe 25 yrs. ago a rodding mag. had an article about something the racers in the early 50's were doing that would double the power of a stock flathead Ford...for one race. Hydrozine! Blown rods were worth a big prize win. And while they could, they used actual ROCKETFUEL!!! Outlawed long ago. Maybe you could try some of that, but do your testing outside.

I mean, the amount of fuel being dumped into the engine to achieve this madness is incredible. No wonder why top fuel dragsters are so expensive to run (besides all the other variables)
@Calango741 Жыл бұрын
Have you ever seen a video of how much Nitro is being just blasted into a top fuel engine? It's almost enough to hydro lock the engine. It only works because Nitro Methane has it's own Oxygen, so the air/fuel ratio doesn't have to be regulated anything at all like a gasoline engine.

Look up Fran Hernandez. He was head guy at Holman and Moody and challenged a guy to 1/4 mile race. It was the 1st sanctioned NHRA race. He didn't even have a car built at the time. Hernandez was the 1st guy to import Nitro Methane. He built a car in 1 week and blew the doors off the other guy. Hernandez went on to run the NASCAR racing program for Ford and ended up head of Advance Vehicles for Ford. He was a genius when it came to engineering. And I'm happy to say he was a friend of mine. Throttle body injection works best for tuning the hho generator. Easy to build hard to get proper ratios tho.
