Heaps of 2 strokes run just fine on 50:1 fuel/oil mix. There would have been heaps more oil in the mix than that, just considering what would have remained in the filter and oil passages. My guess is that engine would have run for ages, however the gasoline boiled away fairly quickly, and once below the oil pickup could no longer circulate.
@kojetono58532 жыл бұрын
Two strokes run fine on 50:1 mix because they are designed for it. They use needle or ball bearings for conrod and main bearings because they require less lubrication, they also dont have cams to lube, just ports in the block. So even without boiling the gas off it would die quickly.

@trythistv2 жыл бұрын
I have a theory. It wasn't necessarily the gas that killed it, it was the lack thereof. Gasoline has such a low flashpoint, as it heated up in the engine, it boiled off, and by about 5-10 laps in, there was no gas left, thus the low oil pressure light. I have heard stories of a fisherman out in the ocean that had changed his oil and didn't tighten the drain plug on his outboard (Some yamahas use a weird bung thing like a brake bleeder, so it can seep if left loose), he shut down miles and miles offshore, fished for a while, then started the boat back up and found all the oil had leaked out, so he tightened the plug, filled the crankcase with saltwater (the only liquid he was surrounded by) and ran it back to the marina, but had to stop every mile or so because the engine would boil the water out of the crankcase, so he'd refill and keep trucking until he made it back safe and sound, pulled the boat out and changed the oil several times, and it still runs like new. No idea if that is a true story, but it does make me curious about boiling off having an effect on longevity, and what salt water would do inside a crankcase.

definitely need to drain the gas in one of them and run it on straight octane booster! 😆
@stevenbelue54962 жыл бұрын
I was surprised it made over a lap, maybe the gas mixing with oil and gunk made for some lubricant that allowed so many laps. I don’t think a clean engine with just gas would make it that far. I was also concerned with gas getting between the rings or fire and spark getting by the piston and igniting in the crankcase, maybe the lack of oxygen prevented it or ring seal has more control over that than I thought.
@MrJamesBanana2 жыл бұрын
I guess it was basically only fuel vapors in the engine. That's also the reason why fuel tanks are unlikely to explode, too rich mixture to ignite.

that lasted WAY longer than I expected, seeing as petrol is a solvent and not a lubricant it must have just been the residual oil that didn't drain out keeping it "alive" for a few miles.

I've seen destruction runs where engines are run full chat no oil no coolant for 30 minutes+
@Muffin_Masher2 жыл бұрын
@@jackass123455 "no oil" never means NO oil though, unless it's just been put together and never had any in it, there is a surprising amount that stays behind, the better the oil the more it will cling, it would be interesting to compare what they just did, to draining the oil and then going out and counting the laps without adding anything, the petrol/gasoline would have washed the oil out if the oil pump was able to pump it. Coolant is overrated if you don't care about the motor, they will go a very long time so long as they have some lubrication, takes a lot of heat to lock up through expansion alone
@derekgardin15122 жыл бұрын
The gas would have washed that bit of residual oil off in no time though
@Muffin_Masher2 жыл бұрын
@@derekgardin1512 yeah that is what I am impressed with, the only thing that makes sense in my mind is that the oil pump wasn't "pumping" the fuel, merely splashing it around inside the vanes of the pump, and the residual oil reduced the rattling/knocking/grinding for 6 miles. Gasoline/Petrol has absolutely ZERO lubrication properties it is 100% a flammable solvent so by all reason that engine should have died before it even made it onto the track. But then just maybe the fuel was being pumped and was actually floating the bearings, and the lack of lubrication is what brought it all undone. Further research must be done I reckon, cleeter has quite a few crown vics :D FOR SCIENCE!
@derekgardin15122 жыл бұрын
@@Muffin_Masher yup pretty crazy. I'm surprised, I would have thought fuel would have made it past the rings, especially considering it had 120k miles on it some of which was hard driving and maybe tons of idle time if it was an ex cop car.
