bruce's biceps were big(for his size) and strong but still retained incredible speed. So, I dont believe it would have ever hindered him in a wing chun fight. Sure as hell never appeared like it in the numerous wing chun demonstrations.

I believe Bruce Lee has moved away from Wing Chun by the time he presented us with Jeet Kune Do, which was practically a combination of multiple martial arts----which was, I would prefer to say, making adjustments to different situations, as "water would to any container". The ripped/cut muscles helped a lot in the roles he played in the movies----and it sure means he worked hard. But it was not Wing Chun anymore.

Mike Tyson's punch measures 1200 PSI or pounds per square inch, Bruce Lee's measures 2000 psi. Bruce said himself that when you punch you keep your arm relaxed until the last second, on impact you snap your arm (around 2-3 inches behind your target). meaning his bulked up biceps wouldn't hinder his punches. (assuming facts are right, there from a national news website, and National Geographic)

Leung Tings merit is just the following: documentation of all different movements in wingchun, systematizing the way of teaching the Yip-Man-"style" and minimalisation of the six sets. Everyone I know having met and crossed hands with him said the same: "running into him is like running into a curtain"
@11Kralle

Kevin Picton No. What I was "saying" is to be read in my comment. What You are saying is: "I don't know much about wing chun outside the Yip-Man narrative" Leung Ting does not glorify Yip Man, he openly changed teachings, invented new training methods (and stated that as it were) and he even developed his own 'set' of the double knife (bart cham do). He never was so foolish to call his system Yip-Man-wingchun - for a good reason.

the difference is the overloading: your body will never compress your spine as the barbell does. Chinups, dips, pushups, bodyweight rows, tricep extensions, sissy squats, jumping squats, and many other bodyweight exercises make up a solid workout routine YOU'RE RIGHT, I LOVE THEM! I do them everyday and these are a good training

Did WingChun for 9 years and can be effective when you know how. I’m aware that beginners tried to fight like Bruce Lee, Donnie Yen or Leung Ting. Independent fighting can result in useless techniques and possibly unnecessary injuries. So overall it would be better to avoid being rigid by learning to understand footwork to be competent in self defence. Not easy but achievable. Different physical drilling for each level can be maintained but it takes too long to learn if students only have 2 hours per week to train. It will be like learning to be a jack of all trades than a one effective simplified self defence.

There is a reason in all of those movements and forms. Bruce himself learned only basics of Wing Chun, so he really included in jkd what he knew in wc and other styles. When you practice wc/wt much, you find a great sense in all you are doing, and it starts to actually improve all your movements and actions in life. No one feels movements naturally from the beginning, you have to be patient and open-minded to start understanding principles. Ofc, if jkd works better for u, stick 2 it :)

Uh....If this style is anything like Wing Chun, it focuses on centerline and the forward motion right? In that case, you don't "retract", you drive forward. Thrust your centerline forward and launch another attack. True, strong bodyframe is very important....I would recommend you get in shape. A strong body does not mean a tensed body. Strong and relaxed is what you want.

You need total body fitness to perform any martial art. Imbalance in strength between the bicep and tricep can mess your arm up. Wing Chun has great striking principles, but sometimes you just gotta throw that left hook in a persons blind spot. Ya know?

it depends which martial art you're talkin' and how much weight do you usually train, in physics large mass=relatively slow moving, I agree with you that properly done with good stretching it may be good, I just guessed from this video that in WC cannot help I don't know since I don't practice WC :)

in the olympics most of the martial artists I mentioned before don't work or they don't usually train mostly with weights, that's fact. period. In some other olympic disciplines I don't know. large mass=slow moving it's physics not an opinion. I agree with you maybe I'm seeing only opposites, I did capoeira and we used to train with (light) weights but they're not the main training and you should compensate with stretching to be really effective.

@shiest13 I think what they were saying is that biceps aren't really needed in a fight, it's the triceps. Most people having big biceps would tend to abuse them, so they just say that it's detrimental to your punching ability to have them. Bruce lee did have muscles that the wing tsun trainer considered beneficial to punching power (have you seen him flex his lats?) I think the show just misunderstood what he was trying to say.

Theyre saying that the triceps are the main aspect when DELIVERING a powerful punch, not taking it back. The sifu is saying people tense up the biceps when punching which doesnt help anything.

see what i noticed is everyone has their versions of wing chun, even those who practiced under Ip man.. and so i guess instead of taking the drills and techniques and trying to make it a little more efficient for your use(maybe lazy) but instead just learn jkd, for it is bruce lee's version of wing chun and when doing it, it feels most natural to me rather than some of the odd movements that most teachers like to elaborate on.. but i find it's better to learn the basics before specific forms..

Now, after all, is Leung Ting a disciple of Grandmaster Ip Man? Ip Man’s eldest son Sifu Ip Chun testified that he had never seen his father teaching pugilism to Leung Ting. This proves that Leung Ting is not a disciple personally-tutored by Ip Man.

Some asked that if Leung Ting was not Ip Man’s pupil, he was at least Sifu Leung Sheung’s pupil. (in other words, he was Ip Man’s second-generation disciple.) But Sifu Leung Sheung declared that neither was Leung Ting his disciple. The Sihing of the Wing Chun School Leung Sheung said at the press conference: “I have a disciple called Chong Pei, Leung Ting has followed Chong Pei to learn kung fu.”

I agree with the car analogy but big biceps doesn't mean that your punch would be less powerful. It just means that you should completely relax the contraction muscles when you jab (only using the muscles to push). But why the back muscles? Aren't the generally for pulling movements (e.g. rowing)? Wouldn't you have to train the chest with the triceps for the forward power?

@JonathanBloggs I agree on that part all this tricep being most important for strong punch is kinda, well, silly. Boxers have by far strongest punches and they have it with a reason. Tricep is important for punches used in Wing Chun since they rely on lighting fast and precise punches to weak points (lot of them being neck) witch can be lethal. That's also reason why you wont see Wing Chun in competitions like K1 since lot of moves are forbidden there and are used by Wing Chun.

Flat palm -> temple of someone's head -> KO or Stun. This isn't a style in which power = bad. This is more of a style in which power isn't required to win. It's a semi decent style but nowhere near the top tier of martial arts. Off-topic though, zomg Sammo Hung :O.

You need both triceps and biceps. There are times when you lifet your hands upwards, and yes you use more body structire than muscle, but you still need the muscle. Its a great misconception. It is definately not a hinderence having big biceps (wish I had some). In BJJ you do well if you have strength, but you don't need to be a bodybuilder so the same is across all martial arts.

well, push ups it's different you use your own body, ever seen a body builder doing martial arts? in the olympics a karate, a judo, a taekwondo player is muscled like a big bodybuilder? 'The muscles of the hips, waist, and back especially help to drive a punch with more power and speed', that's right but if you stay too rigid with the big muscle hard your body will never react rapidly, that's fact.

In any form of fighting training the body is key. I like Wing Chun but Leung Ting is whack. @Mangekyou Amateurasu 'JKD' classes don't exist, or at least shouldnt.. Jeet Kune Do is the philosophy of Bruce Lee, basically saying to take what works in different arts and put them together to form your own personal 'art'. 'JKD' is Bruce Lee's, no one else's, ie. it was never designed to be sold as a style by the likes of Dan Inosanto. It's a buzzword for MMA classes these days, so credit it for creating the modern MMA climate. But it's ridiculous to say it's any better/worse than Wing Chun
