@Velasca Sir Naha Te, Shuri Te and Tamari Te are the three systems that Okinawan Karate are divided into. In Naha Te one can train in Goju Ryu, Isshin Ryu, Ryue Ryu, "Uechi Ryu" Ho Oo Ryu. In Shuri Te one can train in Shito Ryu, Shotokan, Shorin Ryu. Tamari Te (that I know of) has become a part of the other two systems and is no longer a system to it's self. Goju Ryu is a part of Okinawan Karate and a branch of Naha Te. Osu

Good question. Sad thing is, many people who train in karate won't ever use it because it was never taught to them. Many instructors weren't taught a lot of the close-quarters, in-fighting techniques that are prevalent in traditional karate. Hence, they pass on only what they have learned to their students, and due to extreme loyalty and overconfidence, they end up buying into only what they learned from their sensei.

These move are similar to the more effective hapkido techniques- minus the emphasis on bone breaking (nerve clustors often accure around vulnerabilities in the human body. Evolution in action. You can exploite the pain and make them help you break a bone or dislocate something).

@Aikidopoi Definitely agreed. It's interesting when people say that stuff like spin kicks will never work. Problem is, even the greatest martial artists of our time would be training...maybe about as much as an above average student back then. To the people back then, martial arts wasn't just a hobby, or even a way of life. It was the DIFFERENCE between life and death. I'll bet you if you practice your spin kicks a hundred times a day for ten years, they'll start working.

@DragonZord90 Well, one man's spin heel hook is another dude's tornado kick, so I'm not going to go into technique specifics. What I am going to say is that a lot of traditional martial arts will incorporate acrobatic moves that would never work in a practical situation, but the thing is, they understand that. Usually you would practice those sorts of things, not because you would use it in a fight, but just to train your overall control over your body. Also, they look cool.

@nazworkshop Totally agree, bro. Also, there are people who feel they don't need to be in the best physical shape possible (depending on age and others factors, of course), thinking that knowledge and technique is enough. Not saying every martial artist has to look like Bruce Lee or Bolo, but don't just let yourself go either.

I saw one of these guys "touch" a dude in the face or neck. He went down and convulsed. It was scary. It didn't look like he really even touched the guy, but the guy was out like a light. The Asian dude used a heel fist (I think that's what they call it), but he barely touched the guy. It was crazy. Don't know what happened or why, but it was cool to see first hand.

On average? Not many. But those that do see it's effectiveness. My Sensei helps teach local law enforcement officers and I recently got a job as a bouncer in a bar. I've already kicked out quite a few "MMA" wannabees. My father, who began teaching me martial arts initially, was a police officer and a bouncer as well for a while. He too boasts karate's effectiveness.

@GetDamage Aikido has changed a lot in recent years, as have all martial arts. Among older practitioners, stories of the 'old days' often involve training that people just wouldn't submit themselves to anymore. Things used to be a lot more 'real' if you get my meaning. People used to have to use their training. A lot of modern Aikido dojos have lost the 'martial' part of the martial art. It's actually a very effective art, if practiced with proper discipline.

@hellwolf882 ...not really. Lots of traditional martial arts work, and some don't. Lots of modern martial arts work, and some don't. Whether a martial art works or not is, first of all, completely dependent on what the student wants from it (not everyone trains in MA's to be fighters, you know), and second of all, completely independent of how 'modern' or 'traditional' it is.

Why do people seem to think mma is the ultimate martial art anyway, its designed for use in cage competitions e.g. it has restrictions on techniques. So they dont even learn a majority of techniques that could be used for self defence yet they knock down arts such as tkd and karate which train specifically in these ( not the sports versions :)) which include strikes to the throat and groin. So how they believe that their mma would stand up against this idk.
@KenpoKid77
@KenpoKid77 14 жыл бұрын
@robertvoice On the contrary my friend. Karate - the real kind, anyway - is more than just block, punch & kick. It also uses, throws, grapples, takedowns, joint manipulation, and knowledge of pressure points. The watered-down, sport-centered versions don't accurately represent real karate.

its up to you to believe if it happened or wether it didn't, i cannot bother and i dont want to get into figths with ppl who want to kill me, and less record it, martial arts forms are made up for a reason, not because it looks cool or something, its an way to endurance your body with the movements, with training you will domain your body and mind, and just like i did, in a case when someone is going to kill you, you'll use everything you've trained. for nothing more.
@Crudshifter
@Crudshifter 15 жыл бұрын
And yes, before you say it, a master was present, but he wouldn't have been able to stop them (mostly one step techniques). It's clear you don't know what you're talking about anyway, you're hardly going to kill someone by pressing the indent of their arm (or striking their ribs lightly). It's clear these are not suitable for competition (under most rulesets) so if by opponent, you mean aggressor, if you are at risk you do what you have to to defend yourself. Stop being an armchair warrior.

@kouizumiisenokami11 Yeah, there's a big crazy clusterfuck surrounding Korean history, especially concerning martial arts. You have Japanese dudes, Tang Soo Do dudes, Hapkido dudes, and Hwa Rang Do dudes (there's more, I think) all thinking that they were first and best. At the moment, I'm pretty sure that no one actually knows. The Japanese burned so much of Korean historical texts that it's really hard to say anything for sure.

Phillipe Steele The historical evidence suggests that karate contained a lot of grappling and wrestling before it was assimilated by Japan. This method of infighting and grappling was recorded in kata. Many Karateka speak badly about mma without giving it a try, same goes for bjj and other arts. Correct me if Im wrong, the best defence against being grappled in a self protection scenario is to learn how to grapple. Old school karate covers this, or at least it did at some point. Thankfully things are starting to change and more Karateka are starting to interpret kata realistically at close range
@adammills9715
@adammills9715 6 жыл бұрын
xllab1 1. Its definitely a sport. I would ask for your definition of "art" though. Many mma practiconers derive meaning, enjoyment and fullfillment from doing what they do and as a result, grow and build character, how is that not a martial art. 2. Agreed, no question there. 3. Not necessarily. Surely that completely depends on what you are training for. If you are training for self defence you should be learning about signs of abusive relationships, pre emotive striking, verbal de escalation, learning how to properly escape and flee, how to deal with the legal case after the incident etc. Only a small number of martial artists I.e. those in the military perhaps would be directly learning to "kill". You said mma fighters learn to earn money. Some do but most mma practiconers don't earn anything. They learn the art because it's fulfilling and because it's fun :)

Unfortunately in america all anyone knows is "american bushido". All the instructors of which I have encountered have been studying martial arts less long than I. Most for half the time. The "head instructors" have about five years less experiance than I do...thats fucked up. In the form of "american bushido" they all have less than 7 years experiance (this includes "head instructors") So americans think karate sucks.
