I like how you’re infusing some art/film school knowledge into your analysis. But a pet peeve of mine is when people say “pan up” or “pan down” instead of “tilt up” or “tilt down” for camera moves along the vertical axis. Pan describes a move along the horizontal axis. And when Bill’s twisting/rotating the camera, the term for this is “canting”. Thanks for doing these, you’re elevating the discussion nicely.

The world is very different then what it was 30 years ago. I believe we now have enough of a social economic structure that allows for the survival and perpetuation of diverse skateboarding niches (that includes pants aesthetics). In this sense I hardly believe in a unified fashion direction for skating anymore. A unified major trend is over in skateboarding. Every one has their own little self sustaining bubble now. People will use the pants they identify with most instead of following a leading trend it’s what I mean.

I initially didn't like it but it grew on me the longer I watched. One thing that bugs me about the colour correction wasn't so much the pallet, but the way it crushes the blacks, losing all detail in things like the skater's pants. Makes it harder to pick out what leg is doing what when it comes to a trick. That's just an issue with having compressed footage to work with when it comes to colour grading, though, it would be nice if they were wearing a different colour outfit. One thing I did really like overall was the editing. It felt different enough without being distracting or obnoxious. The music choices were interesting too, making informing the edit in a different way than the usual "cut to the beat of this 4/4 song".

I believe that Strobeck may be more aligned with a progressive marketing angle now. While all skate parts are a brand advertisement (especially supreme like holy shit), the capture focus on material/physical interaction of skating with Strobeck is interesting this time. The board, shoe, clothes etc... It is like a runway model or something, I don't really pay attention to the model, yet the subliminal element of the person who interacts with the material is very important to the overall perception. My eyes during this whole vid kept getting drawn to the dumbass outfits because the obstacle perspectives lacked so much dimension. The depersonalization is a little more than usual in this one imo, I feel like he usually tries to sell the models and personalities/material+skating as opposed to the PURE skating/material.

The skating was tight but I absolutely hated the filming. Let's leave the artsy shit to try Evans and spike Jones because THEY know how to showcase the skating whilst doing the artsy shots. The best example of Strobeck's "single-shot" trickery is six minutes into Candyland. Jeff Carlyle skates through some pigeons, and then half-cab back 50's a handrail. Took me several watches before I realized that it wasn't one take. Then I went back and watched a bunch of Strobeck stuff, and realized he does it alot. Still love it, though. Honestly, anyone who hates on Strobeck isn't a fan of people trying different stuff. I mean, it's fine to have an opinion, and to not like a certain style. But to say the dude's "bad" at filming (which is what I see a lot on the old interweb, people love to hate Strobeck) is ignoring facts. The dude has been filming top-tier skaters for over twenty years. There's no doubt he knows how to film. He's making a choice to film this way; it's not because he's "bad" at it.

I think focusing on the skater's emotions and tricks is more interesting to watch than the obstacle themselves. Especially if you already saw it frames before. It can get repetitive, whereas zooming in to the extent that you only see shoes and wood makes the shot a very trick specific.

i think it's fine to use footage of people that don't want to be in your video IF they actually have something to do with what's happening in the video. an obvious example is filming people freaking out when they kick you out of a spot. that's fine footage to use in my opinion. they made themselves part of what you're doing and now it's part of the narrative of your little skate trip. filming a random passerby that clearly doesn't want to be filmed, especially when just you're doing it because you feel like its artsy or because they're pretty is just kinda shitty to do. as far as strobeck's filming goes, i absolutely love his color grading, i think he always manages to use color to make his shots look really interesting. i'm less of a fan of the way he whip pans up and down so much because of how disorienting it is. i'd much rather have a more empty shot that constantly be hit with disorienting whip pans up and down every second or two. the dutch angles i'm fine with, i mean there's a lot of that stuff even filming fisheye, though it's usually not as extreme as strobeck is doing it here. it's mostly just the frequent whip pans that i really don't like.
@drinkingpoolwater2 жыл бұрын
i always wondered why strobeck doesn't have a 2nd filmer who can get the long shot of these tricks to compliment the fisheye nonsense he gets. its literally disrespectful to some of these tricks that we can't see a better perspective from a long shot.

Not the biggest fan of the strobec filming style but this is definitely a push in the right direction. Would love to see him experiment more with his shots in another way other than just turning the camera (the shot with the bricks was actually really rad). I feel as if he hadn’t released this video (along with others) to his youtube channel it would genuinely annoy me trying to watch considering that i would rather see someone’s skating abilities over cinematic sequences. e.g Suciu’s Verso part walks that fine line. At the end of the day it is a skate video ya know.
