I discovered your channel yesterday. It’s probably the first time ever I’m leaving a comment on youtube but I feel like you deserve it. As soon as I discovered Zettelkasten, I searched for real life workflows/examples on youtube to really understand how it could look like, especially for litterature notes (I have a tendency to take way too many notes on a book and to highlight almost everything like someone would one day ask me my exact sources for everything I could write. Probably a byproduct of the medical school contest in France). Most of the videos are really going way too far for me with very complex setups or are just a very basic introduction. I am glad I found your channel with what looks like a simple yet efficient and balanced workflow. I am also glad to find other people interested in mental models and being polymaths. You seem very authentic in the content you produce and this becomes rare in the age of over-marketing for views and clickbait. Thank you for your work ! :)

I feel that you are spot on about the bottom up approach. I'm considering a workflow for a completely new project, where a lot of the ideas will start as cards, but will then gradually be converted to notes. Your tutorial was the first I've seen that takes a similar approach and you explain it so clearly. Thanks.

I saw something about Canvas, but thought it was just more top-down mindmapping, which I don't find helpful. My brain doesn't work that way! Canvas -- and particularly your application of Canvas is very helpful. Thanks so much for this tutorial! Vickie -- you are seriously one of my favorite KZbin creators. Every one of your videos is incredibly helpful. (I am also a business/nonprofit consultant -- so your application to the field is really valuable). Your work on mental models and intersectional thinking is 🔥. Thanks for sharing.

I think this might be the best video you have ever made about Obsidian. One thing that was not perfectly clear is how do you quickly search your vault from the canvas to select a note you want to add. It may be self explanatory it looked like you used the far left icon at the bottom of your canvas?

Really helpful, Vicky. Thank you! As I've had time, I've been sampling a handful of canvas-style apps (Heptabase, Tinderbox, and a few lesser-known ones), though to do so, I was copying over reading notes that I'd originally made in Obsidian. But now I see that Obsidian's implementation is nearly as good as, and in a few ways better than, what these other apps can do. I especially like it that all my many links, external as well as internal, are preserved when I move notes onto a canvas. With the other canvas-style apps, I retained some links but lost others. Your video showed me a number of features (shift-2 is great!) that I hadn't known about. And your approach is systematic, enthusiastic and without any fluff.

Starting with a Steve Schwarzman quote - spicy. Almost getting there on the purpose of most time management "coaching" out there, though. Don't have to wonder about what extracting as much labor value is worth to a someone who had spent all his effort exploiting people to enrich himself, they don't get as much out of getting people to self-help themselves into healthy working habits. 😊 Thanks for the video!

Thanks. Nice tutorial. Actually excited about canvas, that was the only feature that I wanted to see added to core obsidian. For maps of content I still would prefer nicely structured lists, with hierarchies, colors and icons, because of their density. But, for exploring all the potential (!) connections - canvas way more intuitive.

I just got here and I'm confused. I'm guessing this video has to do with creative writing? Perhaps "mind mapping" is a technique for organizing thoughts regarding story world building? The plugin we are excited about is "Obsidian Canvas" or perhaps just "Obsidian". It plugs into some software which may be called "Canvas" or may have an unmentioned name. Anyway, thanks for making the video and honestly: Keep up the good work!

Hey Patrick! Good question - the software is called Obsidian! The intro to Obsidian is probably the best place to start. The plugin I'm excited about is Canvas, which is a core plugin in Obisidan. And mind mapping is the technique - a tool to organize and connect your thoughts! Hope that clears up the confusion and thank you for watching and for sharing your questions!! See you around :)

It helps as a visual reference but it would be awesome if it wouldn't work just as a canvas and could work as a visual mode where the links we create actually create the references and links between them and then we can see it in the graph mode as a result.

Hello Vicky Zhao. I want to use the Obsidian application for my engineering education. Although I tried with a clipper and a chrome md text download plugin, I couldn't do exactly what I wanted. When I uploaded the mathematics codes prepared for mathematics students into the application in md format, I saw that mathematical expressions in many subjects such as fraction lines in rational expressions, rooted numbers, exponential expressions of numbers, limits, derivatives, integrals could not occur smoothly as they appear on the site. If there is a solution that I can note all the expressions on the page in the same way, please help me. By the way, there is no copyright infringement. The information on the site is provided for our benefit.

Hi, I’m looking at starting mind mapping. I’m not finding much comparative, condensed information. I don’t have time to teach myself or trial them all. I have a wish list. Available on all platforms, I have windows pc and iPad / iPhone I would like to add sketches/ drawings/ photos and files to my maps Can I make my nodes into deeper level branches with multiple layers for more complex maps (3d map) Are there any mind maps that are able to integrate with Ai? Can I sync my google drive? Can I sync my email ( I use outlook) Can I use voice to text? I’m just getting started on this wish list, any suggestions would be appreciated. A short video of the above would be the dream

Q&A: Q1: What is Obsidian Canvas? A1: Obsidian Canvas is a new feature in the Obsidian note-taking app that allows users to create mind maps intuitively by adding notes, media, and cards to a canvas and connecting them visually. Q2: How do you create a new canvas in Obsidian Canvas? A2: To create a new canvas in Obsidian Canvas, you need to make sure that the Canvas plugin is toggled on in the Core Plugins settings. Once toggled on, you can click the canvas icon to create a new canvas, give it a name, and start adding notes, media, and cards. Q3: What are the three main things that you can add to an Obsidian Canvas? A3: The three main things that you can add to an Obsidian Canvas are notes from your Vault, media (such as images or videos) from your Vault or your computer, and cards, which are like sticky notes that do not exist in your Vault but can be converted to notes later. Q4: How do you make connections between notes and media on an Obsidian Canvas? A4: To make connections between notes and media on an Obsidian Canvas, you can hover over any of these elements and drag arrows to connect them visually. This allows you to create a visual connection between different ideas and see how they are related. Q5: What is the advantage of using Obsidian Canvas for mind mapping? A5: The advantage of using Obsidian Canvas for mind mapping is that it allows you to create a visual representation of your ideas and connect them intuitively. With the ability to add notes, media, and cards to a canvas and connect them visually, you can easily see how different ideas are related and organize them in a way that makes sense to you. Q1: What is Obsidian and how does it help with navigation? A1: Obsidian is a note-taking app, and it helps with navigation by allowing users to move everything easily on the canvas. Users can press down space and drag to move around, use the mouse to scroll without pressing anything, or press down shift to move left to right. Example: "Obsidian is a great app for organizing notes, and I love how it helps me navigate the canvas with ease. I can move around by pressing space and dragging, which saves a lot of time." Q2: How can you zoom in and out in Obsidian? A2: There are two ways to zoom in and out in Obsidian. The first way is to press down command or control and use the mouse to zoom in and out. The second way is to use the controls on the app, which include zoom in, zoom out, and zoom to fit. Example: "Whenever I need to zoom in and out in Obsidian, I simply press down the command key and use my mouse to zoom in or out. It's such a convenient feature!" Q3: How can you group notes in Obsidian? A3: To group notes in Obsidian, select the notes you want to group, right-click, and choose "create group." This will allow you to title the group and move everything at once. Example: "I find it helpful to group my notes in Obsidian, so I can work on different sections separately. All I have to do is select the notes I want to group, right-click, and create a new group." Q4: How does Obsidian use bottom-up thinking to help with note-taking? A4: Obsidian uses bottom-up thinking to help with note-taking by allowing users to visually make connections between their notes. Users can start with a quote or topic and find related notes, rather than trying to fit everything into a pre-determined structure. Example: "Obsidian's bottom-up thinking approach to note-taking is really effective. I love how I can start with a quote and find related notes, which helps me make connections and come up with new ideas." Q5: What is one example of how to use Obsidian to visually make connections between notes? A5: One example of using Obsidian to visually make connections between notes is to start with a quote or topic and find related notes. For instance, users can create a new canvas and start with a quote, then search their vault for related notes and add them to the canvas. Example: "If I want to use Obsidian to visually make connections between notes, I can create a new canvas and start with a quote. Then, I can search my vault for related notes and add them to the canvas. This helps me see connections and come up with new ideas." Q1: What is the key message of the video on ikigai mentioned in the transcript? A1: The key message of the video on ikigai is that not all efforts are created equal. Example: In the video on ikigai, the speaker emphasizes that it's important to focus on the efforts that truly matter, rather than trying to do everything at once. For instance, if someone wants to find their life's purpose, they need to be selective about the activities they pursue and put their energy into those that align with their values and goals. Q2: What are the two elements that are necessary for achieving one's life purpose, according to the transcript? A2: The two elements necessary for achieving one's life purpose are time management and energy management. Example: In order to achieve their life's purpose, an individual needs to manage their time and energy effectively. This means allocating enough time to pursue their goals and engaging in activities that energize and inspire them, while avoiding those that drain their energy or distract them from their mission. Q3: What is the difference between managing time and managing energy, according to the transcript? A3: Managing time is about productivity and efficiency, while managing energy is about direction and effectiveness. Example: When it comes to managing time, people often focus on getting more done in less time, but this can be counterproductive if they're not working on tasks that align with their goals. On the other hand, managing energy is about putting one's efforts towards activities that truly matter and avoiding those that don't, which can lead to greater fulfillment and success in the long run. Q4: Why is energy management important for achieving one's life purpose, according to the transcript? A4: Energy management is important for achieving one's life purpose because it helps individuals focus on the activities that truly matter and avoid those that drain their energy or distract them from their mission. Example: Suppose someone wants to find their life's purpose, but they're constantly busy with tasks that don't align with their goals or values. In that case, they're likely to feel drained and unmotivated, making it difficult for them to pursue their true calling. By managing their energy and focusing on the activities that truly matter, they can stay energized and motivated, making it easier to achieve their life's purpose. Q5: What is the key idea behind the Harvard Business Review article mentioned in the transcript? A5: The key idea behind the Harvard Business Review article mentioned in the transcript is that managing energy, rather than time, is the key to high performance and personal renewal. Example: The Harvard Business Review article argues that people often focus too much on managing their time and not enough on managing their energy, which can lead to burnout and decreased performance over time. By taking care of their physical, emotional, and mental well-being, individuals can stay energized and motivated, making it easier to achieve their goals and find their life's purpose. Q1: What is the importance of managing energy in productivity? A1: Productivity is not just related to managing time, but also energy. It is important to manage your energy levels to be productive. Example: If you have a task that requires a lot of concentration and focus, but you are feeling tired and drained, it may be more productive to take a break and recharge your energy levels before continuing. Q2: How can you convert a card into a note in your Vault? A2: To convert a card into a note in your Vault, right-click on the card and click on "Convert to file." Then, give it a title and save it. Example: If you have a brainstorming card with several ideas on it, you can convert it into a note to save and organize those ideas for future reference. Q3: What is the source of the note mentioned in the transcript? A3: The source of the note mentioned in the transcript is HBR (Harvard Business Review). Example: If you are doing research for a project, you may find valuable information in an HBR article that you can use to create a note in your Vault. Q4: How can you update a note in your Vault from an external source? A4: If you have updated information from an external source that you want to add to a note in your Vault, you can edit the note and add the new information. Then, save the note to update it in your Vault. Example: If you have a note about a topic that you are researching and you find new information in a book or article, you can add that information to the note to keep it up-to-date. Q5: What is the benefit of dissecting external ideas visually on a canvas? A5: Dissecting external ideas visually on a canvas can help you better understand and organize the information. It can also make it easier to see connections between different ideas. Example: If you are working on a project that requires research from several different sources, you can create a canvas to visually organize the information and see how the different sources relate to each other.

Is it possible search a word that is used multiple times? I'm working as OPO in a large CLOUD based test SW. I have been looking for a mind mapping tool that with ease can search the entire solution.

Canvas, it's a useful feature. But there was a problem with the cards, the letters inside were starting to look huge and I couldn't figure out how to fix it.

Is there a good way to keep a “local copy” of the linked websites? In case the link breaks/content changes, etc.

Hello vicky zhao. I do the same with a7 cards: recording (analysis) chronogicaly, organising (synthesis) idees by trees ( by composing a root, train of ideas qnd branch nodes) and indexing "trains of ideas" chronologicaly and keywords pointing to those "trains" alphabetically. . Like zk, but simplified and without constrainst. This way ideas can organise organicaly. Obsidian is cool but being linked to a software is not robust enough i feel. Maybe it is usefull for team km . What s missing for me is a system to reduce information.

What bothers me about canvas is that connections you make in it are not reflected in Obsidian. They are not like links or backlinks that can be managed or searched across the vault. So it feels like canvas is something foreign added to Obsidian, not fully part of the system. Does anybody has an example how they work with canvas in relation to linking system? Or perhaps a better way of managing canvas, so it's better integrated into Obsidian? I'd really appreciate some advice.

There is plugins that add connections to canvas if links exist in Obsidian. Sadly not other way around.
