Thinking I might get a small schooling fish to add so the puffers and betas will acknowledge each other less thank you for this amazing video!😊

Haha thanks for tuning in and I'm glad I could answer a curiosity of yours hah. (Great fish keepers think a like!....right before their fish attack one another 🤔). What I have to say, is that it really depends on the tank setting, the numbers of each type of fish, the gender ratios within species, and ultimately, some fish are just mean- so in the end you have to observe and make sure you don't have a little monster in your tank. Besides the mentioned above disclaimers, that tank was still running until a couple months ago, when I gave my Pea puffers to a friend who was ill and stuck at home. Anyhow, thanks for tuning in and dropping a line! If there's a question I didn't answer, let me know, and there's a strong chance I will make a video on it! Cheers

I just wanted to come and say that I just set up my puffer tank, and I decided to see if peacock gudgeons will do ok in there. I just added the gudgeons on Saturday, and they are the only fish so far. I’ve been letting the snails grow in there for the puffers. Well, they aren’t waiting 😂 The gudgeons are picking off the smaller snails no problem! I’ll have to add more for the puffers once I get them. Was hoping the snails would scatter all around and give the puffers some sport right when I add them in. At this rate, the gudgeons won’t leave any for them.

The bettas seem to have the worst of it (as far as I can see here), but nearly all the fish in this video had pieces missing from tails/fins... bettas and gudgeons and puffers alike. Damage like that is a clear sign something is not working and adjustments need to be made, for the sake of the animals.

Tanganyikan Julidochromis, besides being generally badass, will tear a snail straight out of its shell. Then they will swim under a rock outcrop upside down like the overhang is the ground. You really should do Tanganyikans, you got the Juli’s like I said, but also brichardi’s that are communal, shell dwellers and otherwise cool fish.

@@Fishtory That would be a heck of a tank with your knowledge and all the live food critters you have. I miss my brichardi colony I had, they form a family commune with the big siblings acting like parents. Lamprologus go well with all Malawi fish, the ones that don’t go together like mbuna and Haps, well they both get along with the Lamps. I am in the process of converting my 75 into a tank with micro fauna. I want to keep my pair of firemouths and my favorite Aulonocara and probably keep the 6 black tetras but get rid of the rest. I plan to terrace the substrate from right now it’s about 3” of gravel to like 0”, 3”, up to like 9” then add Miracle grow potting soil and sand. Do you know how much ammonia this potting soil will add? I mean how much can I introduce at a time safely? I want to put in barriers to block off certain areas for micro critters where the big fish can’t get to.

Pea puffer beaks do not grow like other puffers, so that's not a worry. I've also never heard anyone say they've had puffers die die to eating too much protein. I'm part of a dwarf puffer group and everyone pretty much only feeds snails and black worms.

I had some other folks correct that beak issue also, so thanks. But the protein thing is mostly about blood worms (snails and other worms have enough vegetation in their stomachs that they actually get them the servings of veggies and vitamins that are good for them

They are right by my dining room table so I can hang out with them all the time! At first, I couldn’t even talk them into frozen blood worms. I didn’t have any sacrificial snails at the time.... Actually it’s just that I really fkn love snails, even pond and bladder snails, and wasn’t thrilled about sacrificing any until I realized that I may perhaps love dwarf puffers even more!!! But DONT tell the snails that!!! 🤫 Anyhow, I have many betta tanks as well as bettas as a community fish in many of my other tanks, so I’m curious how it turned out with the combo. THANK YOU and please please keep being you!!

This worked well until I tore down the tank. So it was a real success, but I tried with some new older puffers...and they didn't they nipped the gudgeons fins a bit...so it must depend a bit on age...when you add the fish and the personalities of the individual fish.

@@Fishtory nice that's cool. I may consider it. Have you tried putting the pea puffer with dwarf crawfish like the orange Mexican dwarf crawfish. I've got 3 of them in my 10g with my betta and a bunch of snails. They all get along fine now. But I want something that will help control the snail pop better. Because the betta and crayfish struggle to kill the snails.

Really interesting video! Why do the puffers curl their back? Do you know that? By the way, you need lots of snails I imagine. They work so fast.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 4 жыл бұрын
Yes i do need more snails... it takes 5 tanks with snails to supply about 4 pea puffers. People forget that snails are full of algae and plant matter, so when people feed blood worms to puffers, it's too much protein to feed daily and often theyll die. As for that curl, ive read its a way to store kinetic energy and they curl up like a spring and then a potassium ion signal fires and releases the beek muscles. I could be incorrect on that though...but it would make sense, if you watch snakes and grasshoppers, mantis shrimp etc.

Many wise people make the assumption at first. But that's the beauty of PeaPuffers -or one of them- they do not require shell foods. Although I keep snails with mine they could easily do fine with blood worms and blackworms. Check mine out at Lush&SaltyAquariums (KZbin) and help a fellow subscriber out :)

@Fishtory
@Fishtory 3 жыл бұрын
Usually cory cats get along with most other fish. Pea puffers can be very mean sometimes....and other individuals are pretty laid back. It really depends on the specific group and specific dominant male and female puffers in the group. But in this case, everyone in the tank got along very peacefully for over a year until I moved fish around

Woah this is quite cool! I was thinking of doing a no tech, no filter dirted puffer nano tank (I need to have snail disposal, and why not?), but I'm a bit worried that the puffers being dirty eaters will create problems without a filter ... maybe kuhli loaches to pick up the bits of snail that are left over? That's not a question you need to answer btw Alex, I'm just throwing it out to the universe!
