The entire Mother Head's Family Reunion album is pure gold from start to finish. Not only can he sing, but his guitar skills are incredible - this song barely scratches the surface. He often doubles what he's playing on guitar with his voice, sometimes for extended passages. You'd never believe this guy was in Poison back in the day.

Its a phenomenal album, kotzen has such a varied style, lots of hendrix and soul a lot of funk and blues, and his voice is arguably better than his playing. One in a billion.

At last, someone is reviewing the voice of Richie Kotzen, one of the finest voices on the rock/blues scene. He had to change his way of singing in the late '90s because of vocal cord hemorrhage, and you can clearly hear the difference in the grain at the start of his career.

@@mazzle657 in saying that I happen to luv Richie’s ability to meld his voice & guitar 🎸 as One! I’ve known about D’Arby for 40 years but some never have especially those who grew up listening to Chris Cornell. Richie is definitely influenced by the Philly soul sound like I am having grown up near there. He’s soulful & can shred with the best of them!

After 1st hearing Richie's playing in 89 when Mike Varney picked him up on Shrapnel Records with his 1st instrumental album as a shred guitar player and then his 1st vocal release Fever Dream when he shifted to a more bluesy style I was hooked, then watching him construct songs playing all the instruments pulled my ear in another direction, but I always thought Chris Cornell singing sounded like a thinner version of Richie's voice, since I had been listening to Richie so much earlier. Love everyone's comments & how they express their story with Richie's music - Great post thank you

Ian Thornley gets quite close vocally, and is probably as good a guitarist. I agree though.

@rickjones641 Not on guitar. Thornley is a great player, but nowhere in Kotzen's league...
@rickjones6415 ай бұрын
@@EricStrain-rg2go Maybe not on the 'shred' stuff, but Thornley's slide and creativity at coming up with riffs, using open tunings etc. is arguably a huge extra level to his capability with a guitar. Don't get me wrong, I think both are world-class, and Ritchie is an absolute inspiration. When I saw Thornley live last year, his fluency on the guitar staggered me -- way more evident there than it is on his recordings, or even the most-viewed stuff on here.

Kotzen was known in the late 80's as a guitar shredder with instrumental albums on the Shrapnel label, and gradually added more vocals as his music became blusier.
@toom60875 ай бұрын
I follow Richie since 1989. He was discovered by Mike Varney (Shrapnel records). Back in the days, it was pure shredding. Then Richie became a singer, and year after year, a better singer. Now he is a complete artist. My fav albums are "Mother Head's Family Reunion" (1994) witch is funky, "The Inner Galactic Fusion Experience" (1995) witch is instrumental fusion at it's finest, and "Go Faster" (return of the Mother Head's Family Reunion in 2007) witch is gold. Of course I love all the stuff he created with Mike Pornoy and Billy Sheehan. As Mike is back in Dream Theater, I guess The Winery Dogs is now a band from the past. I like what Richie did at the lead guitar in Poison in 1993 ("Native Tongue" album) and Mr Big in the early 2000's too. About his solo career, "Slow" (2001) is the best album. This song, "Remember", is on "Get Up" (2004), witch is not bad at all. If you like his guitar side, you must listen to is collab with Greg Howe. They recorded 2 fusion diamonds : "Tilt" (1995) and "Project" (1997). Mind blowing ! I pre-ordered "Nomad", the new one, because I own every fucking record he made, even stuff like L.A. Blues Authority or Mikazuki in Rock.

Richie is one of my favorite singer-songwriters, and the fact he can play the guitar like no other makes him an elite talent. I saw him with his other band, The Winery Dogs, last year at the House of Blues in New Orleans. His last solo album was released on his 50th birthday and is called 50 for 50, and it contains a track called "Confession" that blows my mind every time I listen to it. It truly showcases his enormous vocal range and, of course, his uniquely gifted skills as a guitarist. I have not seen him perform it live, but the studio version is truly stellar. I would love to see your reaction, and if not check it out just to enjoy his gifts.

Richie Kotzen is a musical and vocal phenomenal beast. On his solo stuff he plays all the instruments and does all the vocals... Is earlier stuff includes mother heads family reunion, he was also in Poison as previously mentioned and he was also a pretty important part of Mr Big for a while. I'm guessing that's where he got to be tight with Billy Sheehan on bass and why they play together now in The winery dogs. I'm a huge fan of Richie's and checked out as much material as I can of his. I primarily know Richie Kotzen because of The Winery Dogs. You are very correct about his vocals being a continuation of his guitar. The Winery Dogs have a song off their debut album called "Regret" that is in a similar vein to this one. Their rockers are awesome, but "Regret" gets me in the feels every time. They also have a cool live cover of "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" that's worth seeing, along with their harder material.

Richie originally had no interest in singing. I think when he was still with shrapnel, they told him they wanted him to sing and he was like I’m not a singer and they told him well, you better figure it out.😂 if I’m not mistaken, he mentioned that he took a couple cues from Rod Stewart and Bob Seger for his vocals and then he released Fever Dream, which became one of my all-time favorites among everything else he’s done.
