I went from a high-performance environment (professional business to business messaging) to one where low performance was expected (local government). At the high-performance job, I learned mindfulness to cope with the pressures of the job and recognized I didn't need to do that anymore if it was harmful by design. At the low-performance job, I noticed how toxic people's attitudes toward each other become if they aren't required to think about or take responsibility for their work. The local government environment was far worse than the professional environment. You have to deal with the lowest common denominator in human behavior. Now I'm an author and don't accept that toxicity is the default work environment. Now mindfulness is my default state.
