Thank you so much for simplifying & isolating the shapes of the tree foliage. I recently went to Brookside Gardens to draw and felt so overwhelmed by all the trees and different shapes that I was paralyzed. I knew I bit off more than I could chew! Finally found a wooden bench snuggled against some trees, sat down and drew part of the bench in the foreground with a few limbs of leaves hanging.over from behind. only to discover the pretty sketch book I'd purchased was probably for journaling and not drawing because even my gentle kneaded eraser was tearing up the paper fibers! Guess that's a sign I'm going to journal! 🤣 Now to find a safe sketchbook and go back to Brookside gardens.& try again

Thank You again! It has been so much easier to understand the concept of negative shape watching you explain it as you draw and paint. I appreciate the time and effort that you spend on us strangers-- myself and other youtubers out here. I am truly grateful. P.S. When I saw the thumbnails I thought you were going to be teaching how to paint individual leaves. At a quick glance, these studies are everything you explain and more. The Lord has blessed you with a beautiful gift & a gracious way of sharing it. 2 Cor 5:9 & 17. May the Lord continue to Bless You & Thanks for the blessings you bring to me w/ this instruction.

This is great! Foliage is a pictorial element with such variation and so many overlaps! It's time well spent doing exercises like this that help reduce that apparent complexity to paintable shapes. We're going to have to bookmark this one for future reference!

Hi Steve. I love your channel. I struggle with trees and foliage so I tried this exercise. Mine looks bad. The problem is I don’t know why it looks bad. I have darks. I have lights. I’ve tried to suggest some leaves (but not too many). I’m now going to go try it again. Maybe I’ll try different greens. I’m determined to get this.

Hi Steve, I'm so grateful for you and your channel I find your channel is head and shoulders above all of the other channels, thanks so much for all of your videos I did notice that you used watercolor brush pens,I could not find one of your videos that covers this subject, you mentioned Zebra brand in this video are they your preferred brand. it seems obvious that you use pen brushes to do sketches with, and I can only assume you use them for detail work also. If you cover bush pens use in a video is it possible to let me know what the title of that video is? Thank you so very for sharing your masterful talent and techniques.
