This is basically the view outside my front window in the California mountains, covered with redwoods and looking across the river. I've been wondering how to paint the mist rising from the river...and I can hardly wait to try this! Thank you.

Most enjoyable Steve, you are a brave man venturing out into the open in the cold....you are to be admired. Beautiful tones in the trees. I must admit that I too always seem to want to add details before I really ought to, I guess that I will have to train myself to hold back. I also have trouble with tone/ values. I think that I am paying attention and adding different tones but the end product never seems to have enough contrast.

I am so engrossed in your videos! Immersed, actually. I enjoy watching you paint, and I have not yet watched all your videos, so maybe you cover this in some of them, but I would like to see more of your palette work. I daresay mixing the paints correctly is as important as getting them down on the paper. I am very much a beginner with my aged-fine-wine watercolors and I am learning so much from you. Thank you for doing some painting in real time; that is very helpful. Am I correct in deducing that a wash is the color put down initially and then the subsequent transparent colors are glazes? Again, thank you for your great instruction, humor and beautiful paintings. I hope you will be on You Tube for a long time to come.

I have M.Graham paints and set them up in a palette box. I love the paints but they always freak me out when I bring the box outside. A little bit tilted and there comes all the mess! They really destroyed my mood for plein air sketching the last time I went out xD But I'll give them another try sometime.

Jamie Tr Yeah it can get a bit messy. I paint a little drier when I'm painting plein air than I do in studio. I mainly stick to journal sketches and studies rather than bigger works.

Beautiful trees on your property! I like that you paint small sketches. I need to learn to do that (small sketches) instead of feeling like I have to do a big painting. Sometimes "BIG" can be paralyzing & overwhelming. Also, love the canvas camping table. I love that it folds-up like a camp chair. Most tables seem to be the hard kind and are cumbersome to carry to a plein air paint out. What store did you purchase yours at, Steve? :)

@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 10 жыл бұрын
I have used acrylics quite a lot in the past. As an illustrator mainly (back in the 90's) for product illustration. For most of that type work I later turned to digital. It was more efficient and made corrections easier for client work. My first set of paints was acrylic (back in the ancient 70's. Yeah, I'm THAT old.) I did some landscape painting and such in acrylic back then as a teen. As time has gone by, I found myself using acrylic in more of a watercolor technique, which has always been my first love. So, I don't do much with acrylic anymore... but, never say never.

i am in my 50s steve i used to use acrylics when i was at school but i am going to try and get back in to them they only problems is they seem to dry so quick now i was also going to try some mediums as well like bulking flow increases i have heard you can now get a medium to bulk up water color pain it might be interesting to look at any way i will let you know how i get on
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 10 жыл бұрын
Andy Coakes They do dry quick. Its just not possible to paint and blend in acrylics the same way you can in oils. I found glazing and layering with thin washes to work much better. However, If you've never seen this channel, check it out. kzbin.info Lisa is a pro at using acrylics. She keeps open blending time in her skies, for example, by airbrushing water over it to keep the paint wet. Pretty neat idea.

This looks fun, but I am quite the novice. I would think that being out in nature would cause the process speed to increase due to the water evaporating/drying quicker due to wind, etc. I believe in several other videos you comment that at a certain point things start to happen quickly and you have to work quickly and know when to take advantage of the wetness - or something along those lines. Is this still an exercise you'd recommend for newbies who might not yet know enough to work so quickly? Keep up the great work and I look forward to your future vids.
@mindofwatercolor
@mindofwatercolor 9 жыл бұрын
+James Darrell All very good questions. Yes, a breeze can dry things must faster outside. Working while paint is wet can definitely happen fast but is an important skill to develop. You can work smaller areas to manage them better. Working fast comes into play especially when developing large wet areas because there is much to cover. In things like skies for example, so when possible break it down to the most manageable areas possible. Pick the largest brush possible that will also allow you to still control the level of detail. Masking highlights, rather than painting around them can also help you focus control on the paint application. Thanks!

+Robyn Beltrametti Thanks Robyn. It actually depends a lot on what I'm painting. Color choice is far less planned than you might think. I have more than one palette set up so sometimes its just whatever palette I grabbed and I don't always remember the exact color name. I go by look of the colors on my palette almost exclusively.

+lucicani x number of go to's mainly. I like transparent or semi-transparent colors and stick mainly to those. I also paint with limited palettes a lot. I do have several palettes, usually set up for a particular painting but since I have several dishes I'll reuse them for other paintings when possible. I can't do it at the moment but, I'll see if I can compile a list of my favorites and post them at some point.

Hello all! I though I would advise you to be cautious when using the brush washer/strainer. If you rub your brush against the strainer, the strainer might ruin the point of your brush. I tried it with a cheap brush and noticed that the point was not as sharp.
@VanmeterFL
@VanmeterFL Жыл бұрын
Yes, this is true. I've seen artists recommend the use of little "fingery" silicone things they suction to the bottom of their water container too and have wondered if those will also ruin brushes. It's not recommended to "scrub" your brush on any surface on a constant basis. Especially when swishing it will do the job.

Not exactly Plein Air 9 (Unless you have the windows open). I have devised a way of painting from the driving seat of the car (not moving) I have made a board that fits on the steering wheel with a small piece of wood at the bottom for the pad to rest on and a piece on the top/back to hook over the wheel. My tray to hold bits and pieces, is cut to fit between the two front seats, with a hole cut so that it slips over the gear shift. The passenger seat can also be pressed into service The only drawback is that you cannot always get the car where the best subjects are ! BUT, you can paint in the rain !

You're very talented. I love watching a painting come together; however, (hope I can explain this) I'd like to be shown more reference points on the item you're painting. All I see in this video is what you're putting on the paper but no explanation of what you're seeing on the tree and transferring that to the paper. Plein air painting is very intimidating to me (painting in general is intimidating to me). I'm very new to putting anything on paper, but am quite surprised, as some is not too shabby, even framing some and giving as gifts! I'm over-analytical and seem to get caught up in the details too much, finding myself thinking I "need" to put every leaf, or whatever, in the painting. Having you explain what you're seeing on the real tree, then showing how you transfer that to paper would be greatly beneficial to me. Thank you.

N Axsom Ok, I'll keep that in mind. Sometimes possible, sometimes not. A little more difficult with plein air but we'll see. Often times in plein air what I see I use as a clue and the reference is only a starting point so it might be confusing. You'll just wonder how I ended up with what I painted. However, good input and your point is well taken.

The Mind of Watercolor Great! Exactly what you've described is what I'd like to know......WHAT clue did you see and HOW did you transfer it to the paper? I'm hoping the explanation will take the wonder out of it. Thanks for your quick reply.

N Axsom If its a help, the reference would be at 3:12 in the video. The "clues" are my comments about studying and representing essential (basic) forms. If you're on a computer, you can open a separate browser window at 3:12 and freeze frame then compare that to what I'm doing in the other window. but just know that I'm not copying the tree per se. I'm studying the general forms that make that tree what it is (not specific leaf detail) and the location of light and dark values. Then with that information I'm trying to be inventive and "own" the information. Nothing more than that. I don't like to show reference from beginning to end in a video because often the point is not copying the image. The point here is, go out and find a tree of your own and approach it in this way. The main clues or hints I'm studying in this video are the essential forms trees make (so eventually I could make them with my eyes closed) and where the light and shadow values are. Make sense? Hope that helps in this video at least.

The Mind of Watercolor Yes, makes complete sense. I just need to learn to implement it. It's so hard for me to shake the details....copying...exactly. As I do w/my Christmas tree lights to make sure they're spread out evenly....."the squint test"....it gets all of the other stuff out of the picture. I should do that to capture only the values.

Warning Steve! Plein air can be addicting. When I was in Jr. High school, my art teacher Ms. Wilson (great teachers are never forgotten) took the class outdoors to paint. 50 years later, I'm still on street corners...painting. Love your paintings. But I agree, your plein air kit could use some upgrades😎

hello! I love your paint! I want to by watercolor for beginner. Can you recommend me one?? I can afford SCHMINCKE 8 colors (most expensive), WINSOR&NEWTON 14 colors (a little bit cheaper) and SCHMINCKE 8 colors (the cheapest one). I know that less colors in a set is a real challenge for beginner, but i want to learn how to blend colors properly before buying bigger set. So there is 8 colors (72$), 14 colors (58$) and 8 color 51$ which one would fit me best? ^_^

@mindofwatercolor 10 жыл бұрын
BaronBrownB Either should do fine. Save some money and buy the W&N if you want. If the Winsor Newton is of the Cotman variety its a student grade paint. Still high quality but with a lesser concentration of pigment. Does not affect how well you can paint. 8 colors is usually enough. Depends on the subject. I often do paintings with no more than 6 colors out on my palette.

Hi Steve! I really enjoyed your video. I am relatively new to watercolor, took it up about a year ago and love it! What journal is that you used? I love the deckled edging. Thanks again and I am now subscribed!

It has no brand name but is simply "Handmade Watercolor Book" made in India for Hobby Lobby. I've not been able to find a link to one online, sorry. Glad you're enjoying the vids. Thanks for watching.

You are my go to for video instructors. A friend told me about this video and I managed to watch the whole thing and kept thinking of how you simplify things so nicely. I am guessing you've watched this, but just in case you have not, you may find parts of it enjoyable as I did. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJKol3WJZrWgqrM It's John Muir Law on trees.

I'm sorry, but there is one thing that you repeat continuously and it is pronounced incorrectly each time. You pronounce Plein Air as "plane air" when it should be "plen air." Your art is great - it's just that it drives me nuts (OCD). :D

Dan Butterworth Nope, not true. Either is considered correct. Just check any dictionary. Shouldn't let stuff like this bother you anyway Dan. Its bad for the blood pressure. ;-)

The Mind of Watercolor Okay - I'm just kind of OCD. I loved the film and have watched several of them - all great. Sorry if that was offensive. Not meant that way. :) I listened to it on a audio dictionary - I stand corrected. The English version is how you say it, and the French version is what I am used to. Thanks.

Dan Butterworth Glad to have you as a viewer Dan. Not offended at all. If it makes you feel any better I'll try to remember to tell everyone in my next plein air video that there is another correct pronunciation. Kind of like Arches paper. The official pronunciation is probably "arsh". But most people in the States pronounce it as it looks.
