id like to st aside this episode as many was awesome and listening to BRET how humble , knowledge and the rsamblance of how I see this Fitness world and The importance of staying humble. People like him are the ones who give their knowledge and really want to teach , not get famous .im the same way, and as a trainer of nearly 16 years that stays or goes underground really can relate to all this ..

A master class in biomechanics, strength physiology, and how to get jacked. History is replete with brilliant men in their fields discussing what they loved -- Tolkien, Lewis, and the Inklings; Jung and Freud come to mind. These guys are like them: the best in their field, but without the nasty in-fighting of the others lol. Tasty tidbits are the discussion at 47:16 about why free weight compound movements are superior to machines for hypertrophy as well as function (hint: it has to do with evolution, and Sal figured this out long ago); and the discussion regarding the inherent value of experiential wisdom when scientific studies cannot provide an answer regarding what method or exercise works best. This has been discussed at length in the fields of medicine and nutrition where practitioners from decades ago possessed a greater breadth of knowledge than the highly specialized ones of today who sometimes tend to rely excessively on scientific studies. Justin, at 45:50, says, “Isn’t the irradiation effect -- a louder signal from more muscles . . . (the reason why compound movements stimulate more growth) . . . ?” Bret replies, “I don’t think so.” Then, at 47:52, he and Sal seem to agree with what Justin said. “Anyone who wants good upper glutes, do more abduction.” - Bret, The Glute Guru (and personal trainer par excellence) at 1:00:35 Bret’s research with force plates, EMG activity, and performance effects has added immeasurably to the field, and everything he discusses in this video is pure gold.

This was a great podcast! Listened from beginning to end. You can tell bret is not just the glute guy, and is very knowledgeable on strength & conditioning research. Loved the talk about keeping routines simple. a lot of us think we are advanced just because we've been in the gym for years, but most of it we haven't been pushing it. if you can do a set of 10 chin ups, you can definitely say you're advanced.

Getting some amazing results with the Glute Lab Workouts. Just not sure about the history of the hip thrust. Just because there are not many photos from way back then, doesn't mean people were not doing them. Hey putting dumbells on the hips for hip thrusts (in an aerobics class) has been around forever. Mind you they were those little pink 3-5 pound weights, a big burn none the less. Taking pictures while working out was not a thing back then. And the books available on bodybuilding were so limited compared to now. Big glute muscle hypertrophy is trending, and let's hope it's here to stay. Thank You!

I saw a barbell hip thrust in the 1980s. The guy was into Ellington Darden and Mike Mentzer, so maybe he got it from them. Powerlifters used to do it, too.

The guy in the blue was right; back then it was “in the closet”....widely considered a weird augmentation exercise, something like Jack LaLane might do. No one was advertising, and I gotta admit we shook our heads every time we saw that guy doing it.
@Isaiah-ft5nx3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad I'm not the only one who raised an eyebrow when he said, "I invented the barbell hip thrust." Surely, he's smart enough to know that's complete BS. I was always creative in the gym and I remember wondering how I could target my glutes directly and I wound up grabbing a dumbbell and throwing it on my lap to do hip thrusts in 2013. This is before I even knew about KZbin, I'm not even sure I knew about Bodybuilding.com yet. I had never seen it before. After a couple weeks I switched to a barbell for more weight. I thought for sure I'd get in trouble or laughed at for doing an exercise that looked inappropriate or suggestive, and I actually laughed at myself thinking I was subconsciously training for the bedroom. 🤣 Surely, there's been plenty of people who have come to the same basic conclusion of how to target glutes. It's not rocket surgery... Takes a lot of ego to casually make a bold claim like that.

I work as a supervisor in a fast paced grocery store and I’m throwing pallets and lifting heavy boxes. I ride my electric bike twenty min to and from work.Sometimes when I workout before work I’m so tired from work and everything else. I’ll try the three day full body to see if that will work better.Thank you for this video.

Great programming agree...as it really focuses on compound movements. Do wish he had a bit more back and upper body movements in the full body. Which I just add in myself. I've never done so many barbell squats in my life!!! If you are this month single leg and upper program...ahhhhh I've said a few choice words while doing it lol.

Love the content guys and Bret U are awesome but I think U get an amount of resistance from squatting in a Smith machine vs to ordinary barbell squat…do U think that’s accurate? Love the talks and the show 🙏🏽👏🏾👏🏾

I'd say the amount of intramuscular force generated through more muscle fibers, over a larger range of motion, is why compound or the classic "meat and potatoes" lifts build more muscle than isolation movements.

hahah...now that I think about it I see the trainers at my gym helping the women work on their glutes. One of them asked me if I knew who Bret Contreras was. He has women into the gym and that is a great thing even if they just want to work out their glutes at first. He really pushes compound lifts which leads them to advance beyond glutes.

I'm not a teacher and I used to think it didn't make much but if you work summer and you can retire in 25 years and if you get pension (which isn't around for most jobs anymore) and live to 100, $60k top teacher salary isn't so bad when you do the math.

Re the Soviets; while one of their big motivators in exploring exercise science was to dominate the Olympics (and thus show the superiority of the communist system), their end goal was a better-trained, stronger and faster Soviet soldier, to help dominate in the military arena, where stakes are higher than in athletics.

It doesn’t have to be! My wife started doing a “10 minute kettlebell workout with Amy” on KZbin and she shaped up really good just from that. You don’t need to start out fancy. Just good diet and some resistance training, walking and great sleep. You will be set!

I was so freaken confused too so, I ended getting a trainer and started powerlifting with him 2x a week then train another 2 days on my own. I walk on avg 5 miles a day 5x a week and just keep my calorie intake at 1500. Started seeing results. Mind you I have 80 pounds left to lose. I should of started sooner.
